WSL talking points: Arsenal punish City and Chelsea get into the groove

Arsenal made Manchester City pay for a rare off-day, as the Gunners took advantage of their hosts' lacklustre performance to secure a 1-0 win at the Emirates stadium. Despite having more touches in the opposition box, City's decision-making was poor, with only one shot on target to Arsenal's four.

City are still top of the WSL table, but their lead is not as insurmountable as it seems. With eight points between them and Manchester United, any slip-up by City could allow United to close the gap. The fact that City have a significant goal difference advantage over United also makes their title prospects uncertain.

In contrast, Chelsea returned to winning ways against Tottenham, with Sonia Bompastor's side coming from behind to win 2-0. The victory was a welcome relief for Bompastor, who had been the subject of speculation about her future at the club.

Everton have also made a positive start to the new week, beating London City Lionesses 1-0 with Courtney Brosnan scoring in stoppage time. The win marked Everton's first back-to-back victories in almost two years and came after the sacking of manager Brian Sørensen.

Manchester United are also showing signs of improvement under Marc Skinner, who has been giving more players a chance to shine beyond the starting XI. The team's 2-0 win against Leicester was a welcome boost for the manager, who is keeping his players fresh across a long season.

Aston Villa's defence remains a major concern, as they conceded four goals in a defeat to Liverpool. The side have been struggling with their backline all season and it remains to be seen if they can turn their form around.

West Ham Women's Viviane Asseyi was instrumental in the Hammers' 3-2 win against Brighton, scoring the winner in stoppage time. The victory eased growing relegation pressure on the team and came after a poor start to the season for West Ham.

The table is as follows:

1. Manchester City Women - 39 points
2. Manchester United Women - 31 points
3. Chelsea Women - 30 points
4. Arsenal Women - 29 points
5. Tottenham Hotspur Women - 26 points
6. London City Lionesses - 19 points
7. Brighton & Hove Albion Women - 17 points
8. Aston Villa Women - 16 points
9. Everton Women - 14 points
10. West Ham Women - 11 points
11. Liverpool FC Women - 10 points
12. Leicester Women - 9 points

I'm loving this latest win for Arsenal 💪🏼! They totally took City to school, didn't they? 😂 I mean, City's decision-making was pretty cringeworthy with all those touches in the box and only one shot on target... not exactly the most inspiring display. But you know what? Arsenal made it happen and that's all that matters! 😎

And can we talk about how Chelsea are back on track? 🙌 That win against Tottenham was a much-needed boost for Sonia Bompastor, and I'm loving the fact that her team is showing some serious spirit. 💪🏼 On the other hand, Aston Villa's defense is looking pretty shaky... like, seriously shakey 😳. Can they turn it around? We'll have to wait and see!

Also, West Ham's Viviane Asseyi is on fire 🔥! That stoppage-time winner was pure magic. I'm loving the fact that she's having such a huge impact for her team right now. Go Hammers go! 🎉

omg u guys i'm literally so hyped for arsenal right now!! they totally dominated man city at emirates and it was like city just phoned it in lol only one shot on target? that's just laughable. anyway back to arsenal i think their manager mikel arteta is doing an amazing job atm, his tactics are so clever and the players are looking super confident now. also did u see courney Brosnan score that winner for everton against london city lionesses?? she's literally the queen

I'm not entirely convinced that City's lead is as secure as everyone makes it out to be 🤔. I mean, they've only got a few points between them and United, and we all know how quickly things can change in this league. And with United starting to click under Skinner, it's definitely possible for them to close the gap.

And what about the fact that City are still struggling to create scoring chances? Just one shot on target against Arsenal? 🤦‍♀️ That's not exactly a recipe for success if you ask me. I think City need to focus on getting more of their good performances out of their players, rather than relying on individual brilliance.

Still, it's hard to argue with the results at the moment 😊. The teams that are finding consistency and form - like Chelsea and Manchester United - will be ones to watch come playoffs time.

the premier league table is getting super competitive 😂, i mean what's not to love about a bunch of fierce female football teams battling it out on the pitch 🏆! but seriously, city's lead isn't as strong as we thought and that's gotta make them nervous 🤔. and can someone please give arsenal some more props for that 1-0 win against man city? they totally took advantage of city's off day 💪. and oh boy, everton just got back to back wins after a managerial change 🙌, that's what i call a breath of fresh air 💨!

Arsenal is killin' it right now! 🤯 They took down Manchester City, who's supposed to be the top dog in this league, and I'm loving every minute of it. The Gunners just showed they can hang with anyone on their day, and that's music to my ears. I've seen some ups and downs in Arsenal history, but this is definitely a positive vibe.

And let's not forget Chelsea's big win over Tottenham! 😂 That Sonia Bompastor lady's got skills for days, and it's great to see her side gettin' back on track. And Everton's back-to-back wins? 🎉 That's some serious momentum-buildin' right there!

But seriously, teams are startin' to make a move on Manchester City, who's been lookin' a bit shaky lately. I mean, anyone can slip up, and with United nippin' at their heels, it's only a matter of time before City starts gettin' the pressure on 'em.

The relegation drama's also heatin' up for West Ham, and I feel bad for 'em – they just need to get their act together and we'll be golden! 💪

So close but not quite there for City 🤔, they really need to step up their game if they wanna stay on top 🔝. Meanwhile, Arsenal's 1-0 win was a masterclass in capitalizing on a poor performance from their opponents 💪. It's gonna be tough for United to catch City now, but you never know with these girls 🤷‍♀️. Chelsea is back in the mix and Everton's getting some much-needed wins too 🎉. Villa, on the other hand, need to sort out that defense ASAP 🚨. And West Ham, Viviane Asseyi is a total rockstar 💥!

awww man... city's lead is looking shaky 🤔 they've got so many points between them and united, it's like a double-edged sword for them... one slip-up and the gap gets smaller 💥 and with that goal difference advantage, you never know what's gonna happen 🤯 on the other hand, kudos to chelsea for getting back on track 2-0 against tottenham 😌 and everton's win is amazing after all they've been through 🙌 west ham's viviane asseyi is a total rockstar scoring that winner in stoppage time 💪 what's going on with aston villa though? their defence is just not holding up 🔴

.. I've been thinking, what is the true cost of winning? We see teams like Manchester City and Arsenal who are at the top of their game, but do they ever truly feel fulfilled or content with where they stand? Is it just a never-ending cycle of striving for more? Meanwhile, teams like Chelsea and Everton, they come from behind to win, but is that even more satisfying than being in the lead all along? And what about the pressure on managers like Brian Sørensen who are sacked after a few losses - does that even impact our perception of success or failure?

I'm so sure City's lead is totally secure 🤔, but at the same time, I think United could definitely challenge them for that top spot ⚽️. Arsenal's win was a big one, and they've been doing pretty well in recent games... or have they? 😒 That performance against Manchester City didn't exactly look convincing to me 👀.

And while Everton's win is great, it feels like they're just riding on luck right now 🤞. I mean, sacking Brian Sørensen and getting a lucky goal in stoppage time – that's not exactly the most solid foundation for building momentum 🏆.

Chelsea's comeback against Tottenham was sweet, but can they sustain this level of performance? ⚽️ We've seen teams before come back from winning streaks to crash and burn... and it could happen again 😬.
