Workhorse by Caroline Palmer review – a Devil Wears Prada-style tale of ambition

In 'Workhorse', debut author Caroline Palmer crafts a riveting tale of ambition and disillusionment set against the backdrop of 2000s New York's fashion magazine scene, drawing parallels with the iconic 'Devil Wears Prada'. The narrative follows Clodagh, or Clo, an unlikable yet charismatic protagonist navigating her way through the cutthroat world of high-end publishing.

Palmer skillfully captures the wit and cynicism that pervades this environment, rendering it both fascinating and repellent. Her protagonist's dark obsession with a privileged colleague is well-drawn, alongside a cast of characters that shine – particularly Harry, whose effortless charm stands in stark contrast to Clo's desperation and self-loathing.

While Palmer's prose is at times razor-sharp and evocative, the novel's length – exceeding 500 pages – can feel overwhelming. A more judicious editing process would have allowed for a greater concentration of her exceptional writing, elevating key passages like its vivid descriptions of New York power cuts to standouts within the narrative.

Ultimately, 'Workhorse' offers a profound exploration of the emotional burden carried by those on the fringes of high society, highlighting the crushing weight of unfulfilled aspirations and the devastating consequences of ambition without direction. Despite Clo's grating personality, Palmer's nuanced portrayal makes for an engaging read, even if one can't help feeling that they're watching from afar, witnessing a party that's rapidly losing its luster.

As we navigate this post-Wintour era, 'Workhorse' serves as a poignant reminder of the fashion industry's dark underbelly. With its vivid characterizations and searing commentary on class envy and the pressure to reinvent oneself, this novel is sure to resonate with fans of 'The Devil Wears Prada'. However, readers may need to invest in patience – if not a healthy dose of tolerance – when immersing themselves in Clo's inner world.

I just finished reading "Workhorse" and I gotta say it's like, really made me think about the cost of chasing that high-end status 🤯... Like, Clo's obsession with this guy is so alluring at first, but then you realize she's just hurting herself in the process 💔. And Palmer does such a great job showing how the fashion world can be both glamorous and soul-sucking at the same time ✨. I mean, have we ever stopped to think about what it means to be on the "fringes" of society? Is that even a thing anymore? 🤷‍♀️ We're all just trying to keep up with each other's expectations now, right? 😩... Anyway, I loved how Palmer wrote this whole novel without shying away from the darker side of ambition, but maybe next time she could edit it down a notch, ya know? 📚

u know i just finished reading workhorse and honestly it was like watching a train wreck that u cant look away from 🚂😬 clo is literally the most infuriating protagonist ever but at the same time u feel bad for her because she's so lost and alone in this cutthroat world. the writing is super sharp and palmer really captures the dark side of the fashion industry. but 500 pages? that's a lot to get through lol. some parts were just too much and made me wanna throw my book across the room 🤯. still, i love how it makes u think about class envy and the pressure to be someone u're not. fans of devil wears prada will probs eat this up 💁‍♀️

🤯 I mean, I just finished reading "Workhorse" and I'm still reeling from the experience 📚💥 The way Caroline Palmer weaves together the high-stakes world of fashion publishing is just incredible 👗📰 She really gets to the heart of what drives people like Clo, this complex and infuriating protagonist who's both fascinating and off-putting at the same time 😒 I loved how she captured the cutthroat vibe of that industry, it's like a whole different universe from our own 💥 But yeah, 500 pages is a lot to ask, maybe they could've trimmed some fat 🤷‍♀️ Still, Palmer's writing is so sharp and evocative, it's worth slogging through. And the commentary on class envy? 🔥 That's what really got me - it feels like we're living in a world where ambition without direction is just gonna crush you 💔

I'm OBSESSED w/ "Workhorse"!!! 🤩 I mean, I loved how Caroline Palmer captured the cutthroat world of fashion magazines, it was like she took all my fave guilty pleasures and put them on paper! 😂 The way Clodagh navigates her way through this dark world is soooo relatable, even though Clo's personality can be kinda grating at times... I just wanna scream "Girl, get a grip!" 🤯 But seriously, Palmer's writing is EVERYTHING - it's like she's speaking directly to my soul! 💖 The way she explores the emotional burden of those on the fringes of high society is SO poignant and thought-provoking. And can we talk about Harry? 😍 He's like the ultimate charm-er... I need more of him in my life, stat! 🙌 500 pages might be a lot, but trust me, it's WORTH IT 💯

omg u gotta read workhorse!!! 🤩 it's like the devil wears prada on steroids lol clo is literally so extra but caroline palmer pulls off her vibe perfectly, i'm obsessed with harry tho 😍 500 pages feels like a lot tho, maybe edit it down to make it more concise? still can't deny that this book gives me ALL the feels about ambition and class envy 🤯 any fan of fashion industry drama or just wanna know what's beneath the glamour needs to check this out 💁‍♀️

omg u gotta read this new book "workhorse" tho 🤣 it's like the devil wears prada but with more angst i mean clo is literally soooo unlikable 😒 but at the same time i was low-key rooting for her? idk, maybe that's just me. anyway, palmer writes some amazing stuff but 500 pages is kinda a lot to handle 📚🤯 would've been better with some serious editing lol. still tho, it's def a must-read if u love drama and fashion 👗💼

I loved this book!!! 🤩 The way Caroline Palmer writes about the fashion industry is so real and gritty it feels like you're right there with Clodagh, navigating all the drama and cutthroat competition. I felt bad for her at times, she's definitely a complex character! 😂 But the whole thing just kept me hooked, especially the parts about Harry - what a sweetheart! 💖 The author really knows how to bring out the darker side of ambition and class envy... it's like reading the newspaper, but way more juicy. 👀 Can't wait for the next book from this debut author! 📚

ugh i know right? 500 pages feels like a whole lotta commitment lol. but at the same time, caroline palmer's writing is just so on point 🤩 it's like you're right there with clo navigating all that drama and angst. anyway, i love how she explores the darker side of ambition and class envy - it's not always easy to talk about, but girl, does she get it 💁‍♀️. anyway, if you're gonna read this book, just be prepared for a wild ride 🎢

I gotta say, 500 pages is a bit much for me 🤯. I mean, I get it, the writing's good and all, but sometimes less is more, right? Palmer's got some killer one-liners, though 💁‍♀️. Like, that part about power cuts in NYC? 🔴🌆 Mind blown! But yeah, Clo's a bit of a pain to deal with 😒. Still, I can appreciate the whole "fashion industry's dark underbelly" vibe 👗. Reminds me of some of the wild stuff that goes down behind the scenes. Palmer's got some solid points about class envy and all that jazz 🤑. Not sure if it's a must-read or not, but if you're into that sorta thing, it might be worth a shot ⏰

I gotta say, 'Workhorse' has me both hooked and checked out lol 🤯. I mean, who can't relate to the struggle of feeling like you're just trying to keep up with everyone else in the world? Palmer's got this knack for making you feel like you're right there with Clo, even when she's being super frustrating 😒.

But what really gets me is how she tackles the whole class thing. I mean, it's not like we haven't seen that before, but somehow Palmer makes it feel fresh and still kinda scathing 👀. And can we talk about Harry for a second? He's like the ultimate anti-Clo - all charm and charisma, while Clo's just over here trying to claw her way up 🤸‍♀️.

One thing I would've liked to see is more of that razor-sharp prose being spread throughout the book. Like, don't get me wrong, it's great when you come across a paragraph that just blows your mind, but sometimes it feels like Palmer's saving them for the 500-page mark 📚. Still, overall, I think 'Workhorse' is a solid read - even if you do have to put up with Clo's... erm... personality 💁‍♀️.

I love how Caroline Palmer humanizes the cutthroat world of fashion publishing 📚💼, but I gotta say, I'm still trying to get on board with Clodagh's vibe 😒. She's like the edgy cousin at a family reunion – you're not really sure if she's gonna charm or alienate you. That being said, Palmer's writing is 🔥, and when it clicks, it's glorious 💫. The way she tackles themes of class envy and ambition without direction feels super relatable 🤔. One thing that did bother me was the pacing – 500 pages can feel like a marathon, not a sprint 🏃‍♀️. Still, I'm excited to dive deeper into this world and see what other insights Palmer has in store for us 💡.

I'm so obsessed with 'Workhorse'! 🤯 The way Caroline Palmer writes about the fashion magazine scene is so on point, it feels like I've been inside those offices and power cuts 😂. But what really gets me is how she explores the darker side of ambition and the emotional burden that comes with it. Clo's character is like, super flawed but also kinda relatable? 🤷‍♀️ And I love how Harry brings this contrast to her story, it's like yin and yang or something ⚖️. My only gripe would be that 500 pages can feel a bit much, maybe edit some of the longer passages? 😩

omg I'm so confused about the new season of my fave show 🤔 what's with all these shows now where everyone's just being super extra and annoying? 😒 can we go back to normal characters like, you know, people who don't talk over each other or wear ridiculous outfits? 🤣 anyway, I did read this book 'Workhorse' and it was kinda like watching a train wreck that you can't look away from 🚂😲 the main character Clo is soooo not likable but at the same time, she's also really interesting? 🤷‍♀️ I don't know man, maybe I just need to read more of this genre or something? 😅

🤔 I gotta say, the fashion industry can be super cutthroat and I feel like this book kinda captures that vibe well. The main character Clo is definitely a bit of an acquired taste, but at least she's got some depth to her, you know? 🙅‍♀️ I liked how the author wrote about class envy and pressure to reinvent oneself - it's something we can all relate to, right? 💸 But 500 pages feels like a lot to get through... maybe just take it one step at a time? 😴

🤔 I just finished reading "Workhorse" and honestly, it was like watching a train wreck in slow motion - you know you shouldn't look, but you can't help yourself! The author, Caroline Palmer, is defo talented at capturing the cutthroat world of high-end publishing, but 500 pages? 🤯 That's a lot to digest. I loved the characters, especially Harry, he's like the perfect foil to Clo's desperation and self-loathing. And yeah, the prose is sharp and evocative, but sometimes it feels like Palmer is trying too hard to make a point. Overall, it's a thought-provoking read that'll leave you feeling all the feels, even if Clo can be a bit grating at times 😒.

🤣 just finished reading "Workhorse" and I'm like, woah, Clo is literally the human embodiment of me after a bad breakup 🙄📚 Palmer's got some serious skills though, that razor-sharp prose is on point 💇‍♀️💔 but 500 pages? 🤯 need some major editing magic, stat! ⚡
