UN chief’s last annual speech slams world leaders for lack of cooperation

UN Chief Slams World Leaders for Lack of Cooperation Amid "Self-Defeating Geopolitical Divides"

In his final annual address to the UN General Assembly, Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has launched a scathing critique of world leaders who he says are abandoning international cooperation and investing in it at an alarming rate. The criticism appears aimed squarely at the United States, which recently slashed its contributions to the organization by nearly 90%, sparking fears that the UN is on the brink of collapse.

Guterres warned that "wholesale cuts in development and humanitarian aid" are "shaking the foundations of global cooperation and testing the resilience of multilateralism itself." He singled out the US's decision to allocate just $2 billion for UN humanitarian assistance, a fraction of the previous $17 billion contribution, as "brazen violations of international law."

The UN chief also criticized what he described as "self-defeating geopolitical divides" that are hindering efforts to address some of the world's most pressing conflicts, including those in Gaza, Ukraine, and Sudan. He urged leaders to "adapt or die," suggesting that the organization will only survive if it can navigate these challenges.

Guterres reiterated his commitment to delivering life-saving aid to those in dire need, but emphasized that the UN cannot do so without the support of its member states. His comments come as tensions between major powers continue to strain the Organization's ability to function effectively.

As Guterres steps down at the end of 2026, his speech has been seen by many as a call to action for future leaders to prioritize international cooperation and collective action in the face of growing global challenges.

I'm not surprised 🤔... gotta wonder what's going on with all these 'cuts' 😒. I mean, the UN is supposed to be about helping people worldwide, right? 🌎 But if the US is only contributing like $2 billion compared to 17 billion before... that's a huge drop 📉. And it's not just the money, it's the whole attitude thing 🙄. World leaders need to get their act together and stop playing politics on humanitarian aid 👊. It's time for them to put aside their differences and work towards something good 🤝. Otherwise, I think the UN will be in big trouble 😬.

Ugh, what's new? Another world leader calling out the US for being, you know, super selfish 🙄. I mean, 90% cut in contributions is no joke, but come on, $2 billion ain't gonna break the bank, right? 🤑 It's like they're trying to single-handedly fund global development or something... meanwhile, everyone else is just chillin' and collecting their paychecks 😴. Guterres makes a valid point about geopolitics, though - it's getting harder to cooperate when countries are more concerned with "winning" than working together 🤝. Guess we'll just have to see how the UN adapts (or dies) in the next few years...

idk how can world leaders expect the UN to do its job if they're just gonna slash aid and support 🤔. it's like they think the organization is made of magic money or something 💸. newsflash: humanitarian work costs real cash, and without the US and other major donors, the UN is left with a pretty big hole ⚠️. guterres is right to call out these "self-defeating geopolitical divides" - it's like they're more worried about their own interests than actual global problems 🤷‍♂️. can't we just put aside our differences for once and work together? 🌎

🤔 I'm so tired of world leaders making it seem like they're all about themselves instead of working together for the greater good 🌎. The US just slashed its funding to the UN by 90%?! That's insane 💸. What's going on is that these countries are so busy competing with each other they can't even be bothered to help those who really need it 🤷‍♀️.

I'm not surprised, though 😐. It seems like every time we try to come together as a global community, someone has to stir up drama and division 🔥. But, at the end of the day, we're all in this together, right? 🌈 We need to find a way to put our differences aside and work towards a common goal 🤝.

Guterres makes some valid points about self-defeating geopolitical divides 💡, but I think he's being too harsh on his critics 🤔. Maybe instead of calling them out, we should be trying to understand where they're coming from 🤷‍♂️. After all, there's probably more than one side to every story 📚.

I do hope future leaders take Guterres' words to heart 💖 and prioritize international cooperation 🌎. We need it now more than ever 😩.

this is like the last straw for me un needs more support not less 🤯 usa has to step up its game or else we're gonna lose something really important 💔

omg can't believe what's goin on with the UN 🤯! Antonio Guterres is low-key savage on world leaders for bein all cutthroat and abandonin' coop 💸. like, $2 billion from the US? that's insane 😲. Guterres gotta be tryin to keep it real though, we need more people talkin about how bad these geopolitics divides are 🌎. I mean, can't they see how their selfishness is hurtin everyone else? 🤷‍♀️. and yeah, it's not just the US, all major powers gotta step up and work together if they wanna solve world problems 💪. Guterres might be leavin soon, but his message still holds truth 💕. leaders listen up, we need more cooperation and less drama 💁‍♀️. this is gettin real, fam 🤯!

LOL, like, what's new, right? Another world leader throwing shade at their buddies for not contributing enough to the "world peace" fund. I mean, come on, Guterres, can't you just say it's about time someone called out the Yanks for being cheap instead of using some fancy diplomacy speak? 🤷‍♂️ And what's with all this "brazen violations of international law" stuff? You sound like a broken record, dude. Just give us the tea already - is the UN gonna survive or not?

And can we talk about how rich the US sounds right now? $2 billion for humanitarian aid? That's like, 0.05% of their overall defense budget 🤑. I'm all for helping those in need, but let's be real, it's mostly just a PR stunt to make the world feel better while they're busy getting their priorities straight.

It's time for some real leadership, not just empty words and hand-wringing. The UN needs to adapt and navigate these challenges if it wants to stay relevant 🌐. And who knows, maybe Guterres is onto something - we can all learn from his "adapt or die" speech 😂.

OMG, this is soooo worrying 🤕! I mean, come on, $2 billion for humanitarian aid? That's like, what even is that? 😂 It's not like the US is going bankrupt or anything. But hey, I guess when you're talking about saving lives, money isn't everything 💸. The thing is, if all these powerful countries start playing solo, it's gonna be super hard for anyone to get stuff done 🤝. Like, remember that time when we banded together to help with the COVID pandemic? 🤱♀️ Now it seems like we're back to good ol' days of "I got mine" 💪.

We need some world leaders who can actually work together and put aside their differences for once 🙏. It's not that hard, guys! 🤷‍♂️ I mean, if Guterres is saying it, someone's gotta listen 👂. If we wanna survive as a global community, we gotta start making some changes 💥. Can't have the UN just shutting down on us because of petty squabbles 😒. That'd be, like, soooo bad 🤯!

the UN is literally on its knees right now 🙏 it's like they're begging world leaders to come together and help them out. 90% cut in contributions from one of the most powerful countries on earth? that's just crazy talk! 🤯 guterres is trying to sound calm but i can tell he's really frustrated. these "self-defeating geopolitical divides" are real though, it's like everyone's too busy fighting each other to solve the problems that need solving. 💔 what's gonna happen when the UN really does collapse? we'll just be left with a bunch of isolated nations trying to deal with their own issues. not pretty 🤕

🤦‍♂️ Come on guys! Guterres is spot on here. I mean, 90% cut in funding from the US? That's not just a reduction, that's a huge blow to the UN's ability to do its job. And what's with this "brazen violations of international law" thing? It sounds like he's trying to deflect attention from his own inability to get world leaders to work together 🙄. I mean, have you seen the EU's funding for the UN lately? Not great. But at least they're consistent in their lack of support 💸. Anyway, Guterres is right that multilateralism needs a shake-up, but he should be focusing on how we can make it better, not just criticizing those who aren't pulling their weight 🤝. Let's work together to solve global problems, shall we? 🌎💪

I'm really worried about the state of the world right now 🤕. If major powers like the US aren't willing to contribute to the UN, how are we supposed to work together to solve global problems? It's not just about throwing money at the issue, it's about having a united front against things like climate change and pandemics.

I'm also thinking about my own kids and what kind of world they're going to inherit 🌎. They need to know that countries can put aside their differences and work together for the greater good. It's easy to get caught up in politics, but at the end of the day, we're all human beings and we should be doing better.

I'm not sure what the solution is, but I do think it starts with education and awareness 📚. We need to teach our kids about the importance of international cooperation and show them examples of when countries have worked together to make a positive impact. It's up to us as parents and as a society to demand more from our leaders and to hold them accountable for their actions 💪.

I'm not surprised to see the US taking a huge chunk out of UN funding 🤑 It's just another example of how the country is prioritizing its own interests over the rest of the world. And honestly, it's kind of selfish of them to think that they can solve all their problems on their own 💁‍♀️ The problem with geopolitics is that everyone's got an opinion, but nobody's willing to listen 🗣️ It's a recipe for disaster. I don't blame Guterres for speaking out though - someone needs to tell the world leaders to get their act together 🙄
