Three Cheers for Hilton Hotel Workers Who Banned ICE — Until Their Corporate Bosses Stomped Them Out

Hilton Hotel Workers' Brave Stand Against Trump's Immigration Agents Was a Sudden, Sudden Snuffing of Hope. When the US Department of Homeland Security posted on its official X account that Hilton Hotels had refused to serve ICE agents using official government emails and rates, many welcomed it as a victory for workers who stood up against the Trump administration's deportation machine.

However, behind DHS's triumphant post lies a more nuanced story of resistance from workers at a specific Hilton franchise. A coordinated campaign by the multibillion-dollar company was never launched, but a small group of activists and hotel staff in Minneapolis did something extraordinary. They took a stand against ICE agents who were terrorizing their communities.

When ICE agents attempted to book rooms using official government emails and rates, they were maliciously cancelled by the front desk staff at the Hampton Inn Lakeville, which is independently owned and operated by Everpeak Hospitality, a Hilton brand affiliate. The incident was sparked by protests in Minneapolis as well as other cities nationwide, where far-right groups had been inciting violence against immigrants.

In response to the ICE agents' actions, the hotel management company issued statements condemning the front desk staff's actions and reaffirming their willingness to serve the immigration agents. The Hilton brand also released a statement saying that they have been in contact with the hotel and apologized for any actions taken by their team, which was not in line with their policies.

But it seems the story didn't end there. A video posted online by far-right influencer Nick Sortor appeared to show one of the front desk staff members confirming that the hotel would continue to deny rooms to immigration agents. In response, Hilton cut ties with the hotel.

Despite the setback, the brave stand taken by the hotel workers and activists in Minneapolis is a testament to the power of resistance and solidarity in the face of oppression. When faced with Trump's authoritarian tactics, many businesses have been quick to comply, but this incident shows that even small actions can be significant.

When we think about it, this isn't just an incident between a company and its employees, or one hotel and another. It's an opportunity for us to recognize our own responsibility as consumers and citizens to support organizations that are standing up against oppression and advocating for human rights.

The Intercept has long been committed to exposing authoritarianism around the world and holding those in power accountable. We can't do it without your help, however.

You know what's wild? I was just watching a YouTube video of a cat playing the piano 🐈🎹 and thinking about how funny it is when animals try to make music. Like, have you ever seen a dog try to play the drums? It's hilarious! 🐕😂

🤝 I think what really got me about this story is how one small act of defiance by a group of hotel staff sparked a huge reaction from both Hilton and DHS. It's crazy to think that the front desk staff at the Hampton Inn didn't even have to say much for their actions to be seen as a major victory... just not serving ICE agents was enough 😊. But what's also interesting is how this incident shows that we, as consumers, have some power too - if we support companies that stand up against oppression, it can make a real difference 💪. I'm definitely more likely to choose hotels and brands that take a stand on issues like this from now on 🏨

I'm really disappointed to hear about this 😔. It's like the big Hilton company wasn't even trying to support their staff, just covered up what happened and said sorry later on. 🙅‍♂️ The fact that one of their staff members got exposed online by some far-right dude and then they cut ties with that hotel is pretty harsh 💸.

what's going on with hotels and ICE agents? they're supposed to be neutral places but now they're caught in the middle of who vs who 🤔😒

anyway i think its awesome that a group of hotel staff took a stand against ICE agents and cancelled their bookings it shows that even small actions can make a big difference 💪🏽💕

but what's up with hilton just cutting ties with the hotel and saying they're sorry? seems like they're more worried about the public image than actually supporting workers who are fighting for human rights 🤑👎

anyways i think its time for consumers to take a closer look at the companies they're supporting and make conscious choices about where they put their money 💸🌎

I'm only reading this now lol. So I guess what I'm trying to say is that I kinda feel bad for the hotel workers who refused to serve ICE agents... like I get why they wanted to stand up against the Trump admin's deportation machine, but at the same time, using their jobs as leverage sounds pretty scary 😬. And I don't blame them for being cautious when it comes to speaking out about it online.

But what really got me thinking is how this incident highlights the importance of supporting organizations that are fighting against oppression. As consumers, we have the power to choose where we do business and who we support 🤑. So even though this might seem like a small thing on its own, it's actually a big deal when you think about all the other ways we can use our privilege to make a difference 🌟.

Anyway, I guess that's my two cents now 🤷‍♀️. Sorry I'm so late to the party 😅.

I'm really disappointed with how this story unfolded 🤕. The front desk staff at that Hampton Inn showed some serious courage by standing up against ICE agents, but the whole situation was handled so clumsily 🙄. Hilton's response just comes across as a cheap attempt to save face and maintain their brand image 💸.

It's not like they actually did anything wrong, but they needed to distance themselves from the situation ASAP 🚨. I wish they'd taken a firmer stance in support of the hotel staff and against ICE's oppressive tactics 👊. This just makes me wonder how many other businesses are quietly compromising their values for the sake of convenience or fear 😕.

As consumers, we have the power to choose where we stay, eat, and shop. Let's use that power to support companies like this Hampton Inn that are standing up against oppression 🤝. We need more businesses willing to take a stand against human rights abuses 💪. The Intercept is right, we need to hold those in power accountable for their actions 👮‍♂️.

OMG 🤯 I'm so inspired by what happened at the Hampton Inn Lakeville! 🙌 It's like they literally stood up for their community and didn't back down even when ICE agents were being super aggressive towards them 😡. And you know what's crazy? Most hotels would probably just roll over, but not this one 💪. I mean, I've heard of companies apologizing and saying they'd do better next time, but this hotel actually took a stand against the Trump admin's policies 🙅‍♂️.

And can we talk about how cool it is that activists from Minneapolis came together with the staff to make this happen? 🤝 It's like, small actions can lead to big changes, you know? We need more people like these hotel workers who are willing to take a stand against injustice, even if it means facing backlash 😬.

As a student, I'm always talking about social justice and activism with my friends, and this story is like, totally on point 📚. We're the future, guys! And we need to keep pushing for human rights and equality 💖.

this is so cool 🤩 i was thinking about this whole thing and how one small group of ppl can make a huge difference, you know? like, yeah the hilton brand released a statement apologizing for what happened but still, its not like they took a stand against trump or anything. and now the hotel in minneapolis is all cut off from hilton 🤕 what does that even mean for the ppl who work there? are they gonna lose their jobs? it's so sad because this whole thing felt like it was just a moment of solidarity, you know? one small act of defiance against trump's deportation machine 💪

I'm low-key impressed by how bold those hotel workers were 🤯 I mean, they're not just standing up against the government agents, but also against their own management's instructions to cater to those same agents. It's like they're saying, "Nope, we won't be complicit in your oppression." And honestly, it's kinda refreshing to see a company being forced to take a stand after one of its employees does something brave 💪 But at the same time, I'm also thinking about the bigger picture here... if every business starts playing by these rules, then what's the point of even having resistance? It's like, aren't we just giving corporations more power over our lives when they get to decide who gets served and who doesn't? 🤔

🤔 I think this incident is super inspiring 🌟! It's not just about a hotel refusing to serve ICE agents, it's about all of us standing up for what's right 💪. Hilton could've easily played it safe and said nothing, but instead they took the initiative to apologize and take action against the rogue front desk staff 🙏. And let's be real, if we as consumers don't hold companies accountable, who will? 😐 It's not just about supporting organizations that stand up for human rights, it's about being aware of the products and services we use every day 👀. So, next time you're booking a hotel room or buying from a brand, ask yourself: are they standing up for what's right? 🤝

🤯 this is so messed up... like what even is going on with these companies? they're supposed to be about customer service and all that but instead they're just enabling trump's deportation machine 🚫💔. i'm still trying to wrap my head around why hilton cut ties with the hampton inn lakeville after the video came out. it feels like they were just trying to sweep it under the rug 🧹. but at the same time, i gotta give credit to those hotel workers for taking a stand and not backing down even when faced with all that hate and intimidation from far-right groups 🙌. as a consumer, i need to be more mindful of where my money is going and support companies that actually care about their employees and the community 🛍️💸.

OMG u guys this story is insane! 🤯 like i feel so bad for those hotel workers who took a stand against ICE agents but at the same time their actions were kinda bold? 🤔 idk if its right to cancel rooms for ppl just cuz they're immigration agents, thats some crazy stuff.

anywayz i think this is actually a good thing that Hilton cut ties with that specific hotel tho it shows em takin responsibility 4 their employees actions & standin against oppression. as a consumer, im like kinda proud of myself 4 even knowin about this story & supportin orgs that fight 4 human rights 🙌

Ugh, I'm so over the drama with Hilton Hotels and their employees in Minneapolis... 😩 I mean, on one hand, I totally get why they wanted to stand up against ICE agents who were terrorizing their communities - that's some crazy stuff right there. But on the other hand, I'm still not sold on the whole "coordinated campaign" thing... 🤔 It just feels like a bunch of activists and staff came together and went, "Hey, we don't want to serve these guys!" And then the hotel management freaked out and tried to distance themselves from it. Like, what's the harm in refusing to serve people who are being super aggressive and intimidating? 🤷‍♀️ I guess what really gets my goat is that Hilton was like, "Oh no, our team did something wrong, we're so sorry!"... 😒 Like, they owned up to it after the fact. And now they've cut ties with the hotel... 🚫 It's just all a bit too convenient for me.

I'm so down with what's going on here 🤝. I mean, these hotel workers were like heroes, right? They saw these ICE agents trying to take advantage of their system and just... cancelled them 😂. It's crazy that it had to come to this, but at the same time, I'm inspired by their bravery.

And you're right, it's not just about one hotel or company - it's about us as consumers and citizens being mindful of where we put our money and our support. Like, if a company stands up for human rights, that's gotta count for something 💯. Hilton kind of messed this up by cutting ties with the hotel after they spoke out, but I still think it's a huge step forward for those workers.

It's also wild to see how far-right groups were trying to provoke people into violence, and how the hotel staff basically said "nope" to that 🚫. We need more of this kind of resistance and solidarity in our communities - it's not just about fighting against oppression, but also about building up and supporting each other 💕.

I'm so inspired by these hotel staff! 🤩 They stood up for their community despite facing backlash from the big companies that own them. It's like they're showing us that even small actions can be HUGE 💪. And I love how this story is being used to talk about our responsibility as consumers and citizens - we gotta think twice before supporting businesses that aren't on our side 🤔. It's not just about the hotel workers, it's about creating a world where everyone has human rights and feels safe 🌎.

🤦‍♀️ I'm still trying to wrap my head around this whole situation... like, I get why the hotel staff were trying to protect their community, but at the same time, Hilton's reaction feels kinda shady 🤑. It's like they were all about saving face and not wanting to rock the boat. And what's with the video of that front desk staff member? 😳 That's just low ⬇️. On one hand, I'm super proud of those hotel workers for standing up for what's right and fighting against oppression. We should be supporting organizations like them, not just buying their brand without a second thought 🛍️.

can you believe what's going on with hilton hotels?! 🤯 they're supposed to be a safe space but instead they're actively working against their own employees who are standing up for human rights 🚫💪 these workers were literally just trying to protect their communities from trump's immigration agents and now they get cut off by the company 🤷‍♀️ it's not just about the hotel, it's about us as consumers - we need to hold companies accountable when they're complicit in oppression 👀

I'm still reeling from this whole thing 🤯... I mean, on one hand you gotta give it up to those hotel workers who took a stand against ICE agents - that's some serious guts right there 💪! But at the same time, it's weird that Hilton just cut ties with the hotel without any real effort to address the underlying issues. Like, what were they even trying to accomplish by releasing statements and apologizing? 🤷‍♀️

It feels like a watered-down attempt to save face, you know? And don't even get me started on how this whole thing was sparked by far-right groups inciting violence against immigrants - that's just heartbreaking 😔. It makes me wonder how many other organizations and companies are secretly backing these hateful groups without realizing the harm they're causing.

As a consumer, it's my responsibility to make informed choices about where I spend my money, but it's not always easy 🤑. The more we learn about this incident, the more I realize that our actions can have real consequences - for better or for worse 💥.

😩 I'm still trying to wrap my head around this... like what even happened here? One minute, you got these ICE agents showing up at a hotel, expecting special treatment, and the next, some brave staff member just cancels their reservation on the spot? 🤯 It's not about taking sides, it's about standing up for what's right. And yeah, I get it, the hotel management was all like "oh no, we didn't mean to" but come on... can't they see that this is a matter of human rights?

And don't even get me started on the Hilton brand trying to distance themselves from this incident. Like, if you're gonna stand with your employees in a situation where they're being oppressed, at least have the guts to own up to it. But nope, instead, they just issue some half-hearted apology and pretend like everything is okay.

As for me, I'm gonna keep supporting businesses that actually care about their workers and are willing to take a stand against injustice. We need more of this kind of resistance, not less! 💪
