The Only Living Pickpocket in New York review – John Turturro steals this simple, charming tale

John Turturro's nuanced performance anchors a charming, if unremarkable, crime noir that lovingly evokes 1970s New York. Noe Segan's directorial debut, "The Only Living Pickpocket in New York," is a nostalgia-fueled throwback to the character-driven thrillers of yesteryear.

Turturro plays Harry, a grizzled pickpocket who still swipes wallets with an old-school flair, despite owning no smartphone himself. The title itself is borrowed from Simon and Garfunkel's classic tune, aptly capturing Harry's status as a relic of a bygone era. As the film's lead, Turturro brings a likable, if morally dubious, presence to the screen, making it easy to become invested in Harry's plight.

Segan's script isn't always clever, with some contrived explanations and plot twists that feel like they're trying too hard to be clever. However, he successfully captures the spirit of a bygone era, from the city streets to the characters' mannerisms. The film's use of nostalgia is sincere, if not particularly original, and it makes for an engaging watch.

The supporting cast adds to the film's charm, with Steve Buscemi delivering another memorable performance as Harry's old friend and pawnbroker. Tatiana Maslany shines in a pivotal scene, bringing decades of emotional depth to her character's interactions with Harry. The film's pacing is brisk, clocking in at just 88 minutes, making it an efficient and enjoyable watch.

While "The Only Living Pickpocket in New York" won't win any awards for originality or surprise twists, its old-school charm and Turturro's performance make it a welcome addition to the crime noir genre. As a directorial debut, Segan shows promise, and fans of character-driven thrillers will likely find much to appreciate here.

idk if i'd say this film is a game changer or anything but its got a certain vibe that's hard to deny... Turturro's performance is definitely the highlight - he brings this old-school charm to the role that's infectious, even if the plot itself isn't exactly mind-blowing 🤔. and i love how nostalgic it feels, like stepping into a different era of nyc. the cast is solid too, especially Buscemi, but yeah, its not gonna win any Oscars 🎬

I don’t usually comment but... I kinda loved this movie 🤔🎥. The setting is so retro, you can almost smell the cigarette smoke and feel the humidity from 1970s New York 😂. John Turturro's Harry is likeable, I mean, who wouldn't want to swipe wallets with style? 🤑 And Steve Buscemi's cameo as his friend was perfect – always a bonus when he shows up on screen 😊.

I don’t usually go for these old-school crime noirs but there’s something about this one that just clicked 🔑. Maybe it's the nostalgia or Turturro's charm, but I ended up caring about Harry's plight 🤗. The cast is great too – Tatiana Maslany's scene was super memorable and added a whole new layer to the story 💥.

I don’t usually say this but... director Noe Segan did a pretty good job for his first movie 🎉. It may not be original or groundbreaking, but it's a fun watch that'll keep you entertained from start to finish ⏰. So if you're in the mood for an old-school crime thriller with some heart, "The Only Living Pickpocket in New York" is definitely worth checking out 👍

I gotta say, this 80s/90s revival is gettin' old 🤪♂️. I mean, don't get me wrong, John Turturro's got skills and all, but it feels like every other movie that comes out is a nostalgic throwback to the good ol' days 📺. And let's be real, who hasn't seen "Taxi Driver" or "Goodfellas" already? 😴

But hey, I guess if you're feelin' nostalgic for the 70s New York scene, this might be up your alley 🌆. The cast is decent and all, Steve Buscemi's always good for a laugh 🤣, but it's just another crime noir with a familiar plot 🕵️‍♂️.

I dunno, maybe I'm just gettin' too old for this stuff 😒. Give me a good ol' fashioned Netflix original any day of the week 📺💻. At least those ones are still innovatin' and pushin' boundaries 💥.

🎥 This flick is like sipping on a classic cup of coffee – it may not be the most exciting drink, but it's comforting and familiar 😊. The 70s New York vibes are super on point, and Turturro's performance as the old-school pickpocket is straight fire 🔥. It's like you're transported to another era, minus the smartphone-obsessed chaos of today 📱. What I liked most was how the film didn't try too hard to be clever – it just went for a warm, fuzzy feeling that works really well 😊. The cast is top-notch, and Steve Buscemi is always good for some laughs 😂. Overall, this crime noir is a fun watch, even if it's not going to break any new ground 🤔.

🎥 this movie is like a cozy cup of tea - not too fancy, but feels just right 👌 the cast is on point, esp Steve Buscemi 🤣 his scenes with Turturro are always a highlight 💡 and yeah, Segan's got some growing pains as a director 📚 but overall, this flick is like a sweet throwback to the good ol' days of crime noirs 🕵️‍♂️

I just watched this movie and I gotta say, I was like "pickpocket" myself out of the theater 😂, but in a good way! Turturro's performance is top-notch, he's like the king of grizzled characters. The film's got that 70s NYC vibe going on, it's like a time capsule or something. And Steve Buscemi? Forget about it, he's always gold 🤣. The plot's not exactly groundbreaking, but who cares when you've got Turturro's charm and the nostalgic feel of the film? It's like a cozy blanket for your soul 🧸. Overall, it's a solid watch, especially if you're into crime noirs. I'd give it 4 out of 5 stars... or should I say, 4 out of 5 wallets 😜.

omg this movie is like totally nostalgic I love how it captures that 70s NYC vibe 🗽🎬 noe segan's direction feels super authentic, especially with the city streets and character mannerisms they just feel so right 🚶‍♂️ Turturro's performance as harry is def on point too 👍 i mean, who wouldn't wanna watch a grizzled pickpocket still swiping wallets like it's 1979 😎

I'm so down for a film that just oozes old school vibes 🕺! Turturro's performance is like butter, smooth and it makes you wanna be part of his pickpocket crew. I love how the director captured that 70s NYC feel, it's like stepping into a time capsule 👻. And can we talk about Steve Buscemi? He's always giving me chills with his performances 🎥. What I think is a bit sad is that the script could've been more clever, but overall, this film is just a delightful watch 😊.

I'm totally underwhelmed by this film 🤔. The whole nostalgic vibe feels like just that – a vibe. It's all surface-level, without really digging into what made those 1970s character-driven thrillers tick in the first place. Turturro's performance is nice and all, but it doesn't feel particularly nuanced to me...like he's just playing a caricature of a pickpocket 🤑. And don't even get me started on how predictable the plot twists are 👀. Segan seems more interested in checking off nostalgic boxes than actually crafting a compelling story. The film's charm is just skin-deep, if you ask me 😐.

I just watched "The Only Living Pickpocket in New York" and I gotta say, it's like someone took all the cool from 1970s New York and put it into a movie 📺😎 John Turturro is awesome as that pickpocket Harry, he brings so much charm to the role. And Steve Buscemi as his buddy? Perfection! The only thing I didn't love was how predictable some of the plot twists were - felt like they were trying too hard to be clever 🤔💡 But overall, it's a fun watch and if you're into old-school crime noirs, you'll probably dig it 👍

Omg, I'm totally digging this 70s vibe in "The Only Living Pickpocket in New York" 🕺👍! John Turturro's got that grizzled, old-school swag down pat 💼👊 and it's infectious. The cast is on point too, Steve Buscemi and Tatiana Maslany bring so much depth to their roles 🤝💖. I mean, the film isn't gonna blow you away with twists or anything, but that retro charm is so satisfying 😌. As a debut from Noe Segan, I'm curious to see what he's got in store next #TheOnlyLivingPickpocketInNYC #70sVibes #TurturroToTheRescue 🎥

just watched this movie and i gotta say, john turturro is def the star of the show 🤩 he's got this old-school swag that just draws you in. but yeah, the script could be a bit tighter at times, feels like they're trying too hard to fit in all these 70s vibes. steve buscemi is always good for a laugh, though! 😂 and tatiana maslany's performance was surprisingly great, i loved her character's interactions with turturro's harry 👏 overall, it's a fun watch, but not gonna win any awards 🎬 [https://www.theonlylivingpickpocketinnewyork.com](https://www.theonlylivingpickpocketinnewyork.com)

I'm loving the vibes of this flick 🎥😊, but I gotta say, the pacing is a bit too fast for my taste - I'd have loved to see some more depth in the plot 🤔. That being said, Turturro's performance is pure gold 💃, and Segan's direction has that nostalgic feel-good quality that'll keep you hooked from start to finish 👌. The cast is great, too - Buscemi always brings the funny and Maslany shines in her scene 😊. Overall, it's a solid watch, but don't expect anything groundbreaking 🤷‍♂️

I'm loving this retro vibe 🎬♂️, it feels like I'm stepping into a vintage crime drama. The only thing that's bugging me is how straightforward the plot is - I mean, no surprises there 😐. But Turturro's presence as Harry makes up for it, he's got this cool grizzled energy to him 💨. And Segan's direction is spot on, he nails that 70s New York feel perfectly 🗽️. Plus, Steve Buscemi and Tatiana Maslany are always a treat to watch, they add so much depth to the story. It may not break new ground but it's an easy watch, perfect for a lazy Sunday afternoon 😎.

🤔 I mean, who wouldn't want to watch a film about a pickpocket from the 70s? 🕵️‍♂️ It's like Segan took every cliche from those old detective flicks and mashed 'em all together into one charming little package. Turturro's performance is def solid tho, he's got that lovable rogue vibe down pat 😎. And the supporting cast? 👏 Steve Buscemi's always good for a laugh, and Maslany's always got some serious acting chops 🔥. The only thing keeping me from giving it 5 stars is how predictable it all feels... I mean, who wouldn't suspect the pawnbroker of being up to no good 😂? Still, it's a fun watch, especially if you're feeling nostalgic for old-school noir. 📺

just watched this flick 🎥 and honestly, turturro shines in it 💡, but the rest is just okay. plot's got some weird moments 🤔 and segan's not exactly a mastermind, but he gets the vibe down pat 👍. still, charles manson vibes are a bit too on point for my taste 😬.

😊 I think what sets this film apart is how it balances its nostalgic vibes with a relatable protagonist in Harry. Turturro's performance is really the heart of the movie, and even when the plot gets a bit contrived, he keeps you invested in his character. The supporting cast is great too, Steve Buscemi always brings that magic 🤩. I loved how the film kept it short and sweet, 88 minutes flies by! All in all, it's a fun watch that'll keep you entertained, but maybe not breaking new ground 💯

I'm so down for this retro vibe! 🎥♂️ John Turturro is like a breath of fresh air in this film, bringing that old-school swag to the role of Harry. And I love how they've paid homage to Simon and Garfunkel's classic song - it's such a great touch! The supporting cast is also on point, especially Steve Buscemi and Tatiana Maslany... their scenes together are just electric 💡. Of course, some of the plot twists feel a bit contrived, but that's all part of the charm, right? 😊

OMG u guys I just saw this movie "The Only Living Pickpocket in New York" & I'm HOOKED!!! John Turturro is SO good as the grizzled pickpocket Harry, he's got that old-school swag going on 🤠🔪. And Steve Buscemi is hilarious as his friend & pawnbroker lolol. The film's pacing is so brisk, I was on the edge of my seat the whole time 😲. I'm not gonna lie though, some plot twists felt a bit contrived, but overall it's a solid 8/10 for me 👍🎬
