The Ashes 2025/26 fifth Test - day five: Ben Stokes post-match interview after England lose series 4-1 to Australia

England captain Ben Stokes admitted that the team needs to be "smarter" after a crushing 4-1 Ashes series defeat to Australia. The fifth and final test at the Adelaide Oval was won by the Australians, with England's hopes of mounting a comeback dashed.

Stokes acknowledged that his team had been outsmarted by the Aussies, who implemented an effective plan to dismiss them for just 332 runs. Stokes' own innings ended on 82 not out as he fought valiantly alongside James Anderson and Alex Lees in a late surge.

"We need to be smarter," Stokes said during the post-match interview. "We can't be beaten by one innings, or two, we have to find a way to win back-to-back times."

The England captain also acknowledged that his team had underestimated their opponents, leading to a lack of cohesion and strategy throughout the series.

"We didn't play as well as we thought we would," Stokes said. "We should've been more confident. We can't afford to have doubts. We need to be brave and take it on our own terms."

Australia's victory was sealed by their top order, with Steve Smith and David Warner combining for a 134-run partnership that set the tone for the rest of the match.

"We played some fantastic cricket," Smith said in praise of his teammates. "We're very happy with how we performed."

The series win marks Australia's seventh Ashes victory since 1993 and will go down as one of their greatest triumphs over England.

πŸ€“ so i think this is a great opportunity for england to regroup and come back stronger, they can learn from their mistakes and work on being more strategic and confident in their gameplay 🀝 the aussies played some amazing cricket but it's not like england was completely out of luck they just had a bad patch, every series has ups and downs right? 🌟

It's tough for any team to bounce back from a thrashing like that πŸ€•. I mean, you can't just chalk it up to bad luck or a few mistakes – it's about being outsmarted by the opposition, and it sounds like Australia really figured them out this time πŸ€“. You gotta give credit where credit is due though, those Aussies played some top-notch cricket πŸ‘.

But for England, it's not all doom and gloom 🌈. I mean, Ben Stokes is right on the money – they need to be smarter in terms of strategy and cohesion πŸ€”. And yeah, maybe they did underestimate their opponents, but that's something you learn from and move on from πŸ’ͺ.

It's gonna be tough for England to come back stronger next time out, but that's what makes sports so exciting right? 😬 Can't wait to see how they'll regroup and rebuild πŸ€—.

I mean, I think they were just as dumb as the Aussies for underestimating them, you know? πŸ€” Like, didn't they expect to win or something? It's not like Australia came out of nowhere and just annihilated them. England knew they had some talented players on their team too. But at the same time, I guess Stokes is right, they did need to be more clever with their strategy... but was it really that simple as that? πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ I mean, if they were smarter, wouldn't they have won already? πŸ˜’

You know, I just got back from the most random trip to a vintage car museum last weekend πŸš—πŸ‘€. They had these old Rolls-Royces on display that were straight out of a time machine... like, seriously, it was like stepping into the 1920s! The attention to detail, the craftsmanship – it was all so impressive. And the owner told me this one car has been restored to its original condition from back in the '20s. I mean, can you imagine owning something that's over a century old? 🀯 That's like, on another level of coolness. Anyway, where was I? Oh yeah, cricket... I guess it's tough when your team isn't clicking and you get outsmarted by the other side... but hey, there's always next time!

It's all about adapting to the changing landscape, isn't it? πŸ€” Like England's team needs to upgrade their strategy to keep up with Australia's clever tactics. You can't just stick to what you know works and expect different results. Sometimes, you gotta shake things up and try new approaches.

It's easy to get complacent when you've been successful in the past, but that's exactly what happened here. England underestimated their opponents, and it cost them dearly. It's a hard lesson to learn, but one that'll make 'em stronger in the long run.

I mean, think about it like this: if you're playing a game and you're not adapting to your opponent's moves, eventually, they'll find a way to beat you. It's all about being smart, staying focused, and taking calculated risks. That's what Australia did, and England needs to do the same if they wanna come back stronger next time around πŸ†πŸ’ͺ

πŸ€” I mean, it's pretty clear that Stokes is being super genuine here... the Aussies did seem to outsmart them in the fifth test πŸ“Š What really gets me though is how they underestimated the Australians initially 🚨 I get what Stokes is saying, we do need to be more confident and cohesive as a team, but it feels like England had some solid chances to win back-to-back times πŸ’ͺ Maybe next time?

Omg u gotta feel for Stokes mate, hes totally right though we did get outsmarted by the Aussies this time round πŸ€”πŸ’‘ 332 runs is a total thrashing and ur not gonna beat the best by just wingin it πŸ˜‚ I mean we had some bright spots like that late surge with Alex Lees and James Anderson but overall we need to work on our strategy and cohesion, no doubt about it πŸ™Œ

I'm so sad about that πŸ˜”... England was so close, but just couldn't get it together πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ. They need to work on being smarter πŸ€“ and not underestimating their opponents 🚫. I mean, Australia played some amazing cricket ⚽️ and their plan really paid off 🎯. Ben Stokes is super brave πŸ’ͺ for speaking up and acknowledging the team's mistakes πŸ‘. And can you believe Steve Smith & David Warner were on fire πŸ”₯? It was an epic win for Australia πŸ†! I hope England bounces back stronger 🌈... they'll get 'em next time 😊

πŸ€” You know, it's always a bummer when the team you love loses a series, but I think Ben Stokes hit the nail on the head with his assessment – they needed to be smarter out there πŸ€“. Like, who doesn't love a good underdog story? πŸ˜‚ But seriously, England had some great players and a solid squad, so it's not like they didn't have the potential to win.

And can we talk about how Australia just DOMINATED them? 🀯 I mean, 4-1 is no joke. It's like they were on a different level. The Aussies' top order was UNSTOPPABLE, and Steve Smith and David Warner's partnership was pure magic ✨.

It's also gotta be tough for Stokes to swallow after all the hype around him as captain. He's always been an amazing player, but leadership is a whole different beast 🀝. Still, I've got no doubt he'll bounce back from this one. After all, that's what captains are made of – resilience and determination πŸ’ͺ!

I gotta say, I'm a bit disappointed for the English team πŸ˜”. They've been doing so well in the past few years but just can't seem to get it right when it matters most. Ben Stokes is being super honest about their mistakes, though - they need to be smarter and more cohesive as a team. It's easy to say "be brave" but sometimes you gotta back it up with actual strategy πŸ€”. I'm loving Steve Smith and David Warner's reaction, though! They're just so confident and humble at the same time πŸ’―. Australia's got a great squad and they played some incredible cricket πŸ‘. Maybe next time England will be ready to give 'em a run for their money πŸ”₯

I mean, come on guys... Ben Stokes is right though πŸ™ƒ. They got outsmarted by the Aussies and it's not like they didn't see that coming. I'm surprised they even thought they could mount a comeback after losing 3-1 before that. It was always gonna be tough for them. And yeah, England did underestimate their opponents, which is just basic cricket skills πŸ˜‚. You gotta take your team seriously and trust each other, not just play it safe all the time. It's not like Steve Smith and David Warner are a new combo of magic players or anything... they've done this before, lots of times. πŸ™„

man... I feel for england πŸ€• they had a tough series, but i mean, you gotta give credit to australia πŸ’― they played some top-notch cricket! that aussie top order is like a well-oiled machine πŸ”„ steve smith and david warner are legit legends πŸ™Œ

but y'know, this just motivates england to come back stronger ⚑️ ben stokes is right on the money, they need to be smarter πŸ” not underestimating their opponents and having cohesion in strategy would've made all the difference 🀝 lets see what they do next, maybe a new approach? πŸ”„

.. I just don't get why they can't catch up to the Aussies anymore πŸ€”. It's like, what happened to that team from 2019? They were on fire! And now it feels like they're stuck in a rut. Ben Stokes is right though, they need to be smarter, figure out new ways to take them down. I mean, 332 runs for England? That's embarrassing. 😳 They gotta step up their game if they wanna beat the Aussies again. I'm still hoping for a comeback in the next series tho... 🀞

πŸ€” I gotta say, I'm a bit surprised by the Aussie strategy in this last test πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ. They basically sat back and let England try to chase them down, which was super effective πŸ’ͺ! But, at the same time, it's not like they were doing anything crazy or out of the ordinary πŸ™…β€β™‚οΈ.

I mean, Stokes is right, we do need to be smarter out there πŸ”. We can't just rely on one or two guys to carry us to victory every time ⏰. I think our team needs a bit of a shake-up, maybe some fresh faces and new ideas πŸ’₯. And yeah, it's gotta start with being more confident in ourselves πŸ™Œ.

I'm loving the Aussie response though 😊! Smith and Warner were on fire πŸ”₯, and their partnership was just incredible 🀩. Maybe we can learn a thing or two from those guys πŸ€”...

man i feel bad for england team they were so close but aussies just outplayed them πŸ€” it's not just about the scoreboard though, it's about how you react to adversity & learning from your mistakes ben stokes is being super humble about it & acknowledging that he needs to step up his game as captain πŸ‘Š it's all about confidence and strategy, and i think england was lacking in both departments during this series πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ anyway, congrats to australia on a well-deserved win πŸ’―
