Supermarché sweep: the treats we love to buy on holiday in Europe

When in Europe, it's hard to resist the allure of local treats that transport us back home or introduce us to new flavours and textures. In Belgium, the aromatic world of mustards is a revelation – from the soothing scents wafting through the 19th-century shop at Tierenteyn-Verlent to the tantalizing taste of Meli honey waffles and cake.

For those who visit France, the shelves are a feast for the senses. The Bonne Maman jam section is an Aladdin's cave of Gallic flavours like mirabelle intense, coings (quince), figues violettes (fig) and reines-claudes (greengage). Meanwhile, cheeses abound in countless varieties from Normandy, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes and Bourgogne-Franche-Comté. Tins and terrines such as wild boar, rabbit and duck liver offer another treat, along with cassoulet made with duck and Toulouse sausages.

Italy is a sweet tooth's paradise, from sugared jellies to lemony beer. While the iconic Baci chocolates are worth seeking out – try finding them in supermarkets rather than airports for a better price – other treats like Blanco Niño tortilla chips from Tipperary and smoked fish from Woodcock Smokery are not to be missed.

German supermarkets, meanwhile, offer an insider's delight: fantastic bakeries serving everything from pastries to pretzels. For those with a sweet tooth, Ritter Sport chocolate and Katjes gummy bears or liquorice are must-haves. And then there's the deposit system – returning plastic bottles and cans for recycling is just not right when abroad.

While some treats may be hard to find outside their native land, many can still be discovered in supermarkets and local markets across Europe.

OMG, have you tried those Meli honey waffles 🍞🍯 yet?! I know what you're thinking "just a sweet treat" but trust me, it's LIFE CHANGING 😂. And don't even get me started on the Bonne Maman jam selection - I mean, who knew quince and greengage could be sooo good? 🤤. Meanwhile, Germany has some awesome bakeries with amazing pastries and pretzels... but seriously, have you tried those Katjes gummy bears? 😍 So addictive! 💖

🤔 I was thinking about this when I'm traveling around europe, it's easy to get caught up on trying new foods but sometimes we forget the value of what's homegrown 🌿 like how Belgian mustards or French jams can bring back memories & emotions - it's a good reminder that our roots & traditions are worth cherishing 💚 and at the same time being open to new experiences is super important too...like trying Italian sweets or German baked goods that might not be as well known outside their country 🍪🥐

Man I'm so over these deposit systems in Europe lol 😂 they're like, "hey we care about the planet" but it's just a hassle, you know? 🤷‍♂️ back home they don't do that, just throw away your cans and bottles and move on with life. And have you tried those German bakeries? amazing! I mean I love my mom's baking back in the day, but these guys are on a whole different level. Ritter Sport chocolate is like the ultimate comfort food for me 🍫👌

I don't know why people even bother going all the way to Europe if they're just gonna end up buying overpriced jam and chocolate back home... like who needs Bonne Maman when you've got decent stuff at the supermarket anyway? 🤑 And what's with the deposit system, it's just a bunch of extra hassle for tourists. I mean, can't they just make it easier to recycle or something? 🤦‍♂️

I'm totally stoked about the foodie scene in Europe 🍴! I mean, have you tried those Meli honey waffles and cake in Belgium? Game. Changer. And don't even get me started on the French jam section – it's like a party in your mouth with all those flavors! But what really gets me is how they make food shopping a fun experience 🎉. I love browsing through all the different varieties of cheeses, chocolates, and baked goods. It's amazing how something as simple as buying groceries can be an adventure 🌏. And yes, I do feel a little guilty about the deposit system, but it's all about being mindful of our impact on the environment 🌟. Overall, Europe is just a foodie paradise, and I'm so grateful to have the opportunity to explore all these delicious treats 😋.

Ugh, have you noticed how ridiculous the deposit system in Germany is? 🤦‍♂️ It's like they're trying to guilt trip us into recycling or something. "Oh, please bring back your empty plastic bottles so we don't pollute the planet." No thanks, I'd rather just enjoy my Ritter Sport chocolate in peace 😒. And what's up with the weird rules about buying certain foods outside of their native country? It feels like they're trying to control our shopping habits or something 🛍️. Can't they just let us enjoy a good Baci chocolate in peace? 😂

I dunno about all these super specific food faves 🤔... like who knew there was such a thing as Mirabelle jam? Sounds like a weird combo to me 😝 But hey, I guess it's cool that people are into that sorta thing 🤷‍♂️. But can we talk about how some supermarkets just throw away plastic bottles and cans 🚮... deposit system is actually a great idea! 👍 And what's up with all these fancy-schmancy food labels? Can't they just call it what it is? 🙄 Anyway, I still wanna try those Blanco Niño tortilla chips tho 🍟

🤔 I'm all about trying new foods when I travel, but have you ever noticed how some places really go all out with their food? Like, I was browsing through a German supermarket recently 🛍️ and saw this amazing bakery section with all these pastries and pretzels... I swear, it's like they're speaking my language 😂. But then I started thinking, what's the deal with the deposit system in some European countries? I get that recycling is important, but can't we just make it easier to recycle at home instead of having to take out the trash ourselves every time we buy a drink or something? 🤷‍♀️ And have you ever tried any of those weird cheeses from France? 😳 I mean, they sound amazing, but what's the deal with all the different types?! 🤔

🤩 just got back from europe and OMG you guys the food scene is EVERYTHING 😍 I mean i know belgium for waffles but those mustards tho 🤯 and france oh man the jam selection is insane 🤪 i ended up buying like 5 jars of bonne maman jam back home 📦 germany has some amazing bakeries too got to try that ritter sport chocolate 🍰

omg, I'm like totally torn about this European food thing 🤯... on one hand, I mean, who doesn't love a good baguette or slice of pizza? but at the same time, I'm all about sustainability and reducing plastic waste, so the whole deposit system thing in Germany is kinda meh 😐... and don't even get me started on how some of these European treats are super pricey compared to what we have here 🤑... like, where's the affordability factor? 💸... but on the other hand, trying new foods and flavors can be a total game changer 🤩, especially if you're like me and have been eating the same old things for years 😴... so yeah, I guess it's all about finding that balance between indulging in local goodness and being eco-friendly 🌎...

I'm all about simplicity, but when it comes to food, I gotta say, trying new things is kinda a must 🤩. Been to France and oh man, that jam section is like an explosion of flavors 💧! But you know what's not so simple? Figuring out how to reduce my waste while traveling 😂. Those deposit systems in German supermarkets are genius! Maybe it's time we brought some of that European efficiency back home 🤔.

man I'm so done with these fancy food systems that are literally just an excuse for us to keep consuming plastic 🤯... like what's the point of having all these amazing treats if we're just gonna contribute to the problem? 💔 returning those bottles and cans is super easy, people! it's not that hard 🙄 we need to prioritize sustainability over satisfying our sweet tooths 😒

European foodie heaven 🍽️! Can't wait to try those Belgian mustards & French cheeses on my next trip 😋. But why do they always charge extra for recycling cans? 💸📦

🤯 I mean, have you ever thought about how much waste those European supermarkets generate from all the single-use plastic bottles and cans? It's like they're encouraging us to bring our own recycling habits with us when we travel abroad 🚮. Meanwhile, in many places, depositing cans and bottles is actually a thing of the past 💸. Can't we just have one set of standards for sustainability everywhere? 🌎 I know it sounds idealistic, but think about all the tourists who are just trying to enjoy their European adventures without contributing to the problem...

I'M SO DOWN FOR A EUROPEAN FOODIE ADVENTURE!!! 🍴🇪🇺 I mean, who wouldn't want to try all the delicious treats and cheeses in each country?! France sounds AMAZING, especially with all those jams and cheeses to try! And Italy is like a DREAM COME TRUE for me - all that sweet stuff like jellies and chocolates... *drools*

But what really gets my goat (in a good way 😊) is the deposit system in Germany - it's just so cool that they're taking care of their planet like that! And I'm totally with you on not wanting to buy things from airports just because they're touristy... you can get better deals elsewhere, right?

Anyway, back to the food - I NEED to try some of those Meli honey waffles and cake ASAP 🍰👌 Can anyone recommend a good place to go in Belgium? 🤔

I'm lovin' how Europeans are all about that foodie life 🍽️! From Belgian mustards to French jam and Italian sweets, each country's got its own unique flavors to share. And can you blame me for wanting to try those German bakeries with Ritter Sport choc? The thing is, it's not just about the food itself – it's about the experience of discoverin' new tastes and textures while travelin'. Plus, I love how many shops are still doin' their part for the environment by returnin' plastic bottles and cans. It's all about balancin' our cravings with a little bit of responsibility 😊
