Shelter review – super-soldier Jason Statham does the business as he takes on Bill Nighy in action thriller

Jason Statham delivers on what his fanbase wants, delivering a formulaic action movie experience. In "Shelter," he reprises his role as Mason, a former special-forces operative haunted by his violent past, and is compelled to take up weaponry again.

The plot follows Mason's escape from a remote island in the Outer Hebrides, where he hides with only his German shepherd Jack for company. When an orphaned girl named Jesse comes into his life after her uncle's tragic death, Mason finds himself drawn to her kindness. However, their brief bond is short-lived as MI6 tracks him down and sends assassins to kill him.

The film relies on familiar tropes, with Statham's character swatting away the assassins like flies. Fans of John Wick will feel right at home, but even they may find some plot developments predictably dull.

As Mason navigates the streets from Stornoway to London, he faces a series of increasingly absurd obstacles that belie his tough exterior. The film's climax features an action-packed showdown with Bill Nighy's MI6 rogue agent, which feels like a missed opportunity given the character's previous indomitable presence.

While "Shelter" doesn't break new ground in terms of storytelling, its fight choreography is solid and some young actors show promise. Young Bodhi Rae Breathnach shines as Jesse, and her future looks bright after her turn in Hamnet.

In short, "Shelter" delivers on Statham's reputation for delivering high-octane action movies but falls short in terms of originality or surprising plot twists.

🤔♂️ Another Jason Statham movie, because what's a little formulaic action not right? I mean, who needs surprises when you can just have Statham kick some bad guys' bums and look good while doing it? 😎 The plot is as predictable as his character's ability to defuse a bomb with nothing but a frown. "Oh no, assassin sent to kill me! Time for Mason to swat him away like the insignificant bug he is." 🐜♂️ I'll give it points for having some decent fight choreography and young actors showing promise (Bodhi Rae Breathnach, you're up next!), but overall...meh. It's a safe bet if you're a Statham fanboy, but if you're looking for something with a bit more oomph? 🤔♂️ You might want to look elsewhere.

"action movie fatigue is real lol, jason statham's been doing this same drill since the noughties 🤣 and honestly i'm not mad at it. his 'tough guy with a heart of gold' schtick is still solid 10/10 for mindless entertainment but if you're looking for something that'll keep you on the edge of your seat, shelter's gonna leave you feeling like you just took a nap 😴 bill nighy deserved way more than a few minutes of screen time tho 🤷‍♂️ and bodhi rae breathnach is def one to watch out for 👀"

I watched this movie last night 🍿👍 and I gotta say, Jason Statham is def the man when it comes to deliverin' those explosive action scenes 💥! The problem is, his character's got some serious daddy issues 😔, you know? Like, he's all grumpy and haunted by his past... zzz...

I mean, don't get me wrong, Bodhi Rae Breathnach as Jesse was super cute 👧🏼🐶! And the fight choreo was straight fire 🔥! But like, come on, the plot was pretty predictable 🤦‍♂️. I mean, who doesn't know that Jason Statham's character is gonna kick some serious butt? 😄

The real letdown for me was Bill Nighy's MI6 rogue agent - he had such a cool character in the past 🙅‍♂️, but here he just felt like a total waste of potential 😐. And don't even get me started on those absurd obstacles 🤪... seriously, who comes up with that stuff? 🤷‍♂️

Still, I gotta give Jason Statham credit for deliverin' what his fans want - high-octane action all day long 🎥! Just wish it had a bit more originality and surprises along the way 😐.

I'm telling you, if you're looking for a mindless, adrenaline-fueled ride with Jason Statham, then "Shelter" is the movie for you 🤩! He's like an action hero poster boy come to life, and it's hard not to be entertained by his no-nonsense, rough-around-the-edges charm. But if you're in the mood for something a bit more complex or thought-provoking, you might find yourself checking your watch after about 30 minutes 🕰️.

I gotta say, though, I loved Bodhi Rae Breathnach's performance as Jesse - she brings this vulnerable, yet feisty energy to the role that makes her feel like a real person. And let's be real, who doesn't love a good action movie with lots of explosions and gunfights 🔥? Statham's fans are gonna devour this, but if you're looking for something that'll really challenge your mind or leave a lasting impact... maybe stick with the next one on his plate 🤔.

idk why jason statham still gets away with this... "shelter" is literally the same old formulaic action flicks we've seen 10 times before 🤯🎥 he's like a robot, just going through the motions, taking down bad guys w/o any real effort 😴 it's kinda sad that fans are just so on board w/ this bs... can't they see he's phoning it in? 📺 at least bill nighy got some decent screen time tho 🤷‍♂️

Ugh I'm so done with Jason Statham's formulaic action flicks 🤦‍♂️ he just rehashes the same old stuff and fans eat it up like the mindless drones they are...I mean I guess some ppl will say "oh but its just an action movie, who cares about originality?" and to that i say...EXACTLY thats the problem 🙄

Statham's character is basically just a vessel for him to show off his muscles and shout stuff like "i'm gonna kill you" 🤣 meanwhile Jesse's character is just a prop to make Statham look good...like seriously Bodhi Rae Breathnach deserved more screen time than that 💔

And dont even get me started on the plot...its like they took every other action movie cliche and mashed them all together into one big mess 😂 MI6 rogue agent bill nighy gets wasted in this film...guy's talent is just not being utilized 🤷‍♂️

im not surprised statham takes the easy route here, been there done that with john wick type films lol 🤣 but still, bodhi rae breathnach is a talented kid, would've loved to see more development on her character tho 🤔. and come on, bill nighy as the bad guy? where's his complexity? 😐

OMG 🤯, 72% of thesps on IMDB have given Jason Statham a solid 6+ out of 10 for this flick... and I'm like "what's up with that?" 😒. It seems like fans are either super hyped about Statham's action hero cred or they just wanna see him in another intense situation 🤺♂️.

Fast forward to box office numbers: "Shelter" raked in $40 mil on a budget of $25 mil 🤑. Not bad, not bad at all... considering it was made during a global pandemic 🤷‍♀️.

Here's a stat that's got me thinking 🤔: 85% of viewers on Rotten Tomatoes say the film is "not memorable" 😐. Guess Statham's action hero charm only takes you so far, huh? 😉

meh, just another jason statham movie 🤷‍♂️. i mean, he's good at what he does, no doubt about it 💪. but come on, how many times can we watch him kick butt and take names before it gets old? 😴 the plot is so predictable, like he's just going through the motions. and that kid in the film, bodhi rae breathnach 🤩, she's actually pretty cool though 👍. but honestly, if you're a fan of action movies, you've probably seen this all before. it's not like shelter is trying to do anything new or innovative 🙄. still, statham fans will love it, i guess 😊.

OMG u guyz 🤯 Jason Statham is def a master of the action movie genre, i mean, he just does what his fanbase wants and delivers... like "Shelter" 🚫 this new flick has all the feels - intense fight scenes, bad-guy-killing-styles 💥 and even some feels too cuz Mason (aka Jason Statham) gets all softie on us 😔 when that little girl Jesse comes into his life. But let's be real, the plot is super predictable 🤦‍♂️ like, who doesnt know MI6 gonna send assassins to kill him? lol. The only thing that gets me pumped is Bodhi Rae Breathnach as Jesse - she's all talented and stuff 💖
