'She had a hidden identity': new film uncovers a mother's second world war secrets

A woman's wartime secrets are finally coming to light in a powerful new documentary that uncovers the shocking truth behind her mother's hidden identity. The film, titled "My Underground Mother," tells the story of Marisa Fox, who as a teenager was part of a radical Jewish underground group that fought against the British army in Palestine during World War II.

As the daughter of this woman, journalist Marisa Fox had always been fascinated by her mother's stories, but she began to question their accuracy when she realized certain parts didn't add up. Her mother would often boast about her bravery as a spy and saboteur, but Fox couldn't shake off the feeling that something wasn't quite right.

It wasn't until 2010, when Fox was having tea with an elderly great-aunt who suffered from dementia, that she received her first glimpse of the truth. The great-aunt blurted out that Fox's mother had a hidden identity, warning her that she wouldn't be happy with what she found.

Through relentless sleuthing over 15 years, Fox uncovered a tale that was even more dramatic and troubling than the one she had always been fed. She discovered that her mother had lied to everyone in her adult life about key information, including her true age, name, and the fact that she had lived in Poland for the entire duration of the war.

Fox's journey took her around the world, tracking down scores of women who had also been at Gabersdorf, a forced labor camp where many teenage girls were imprisoned and made to work back-breaking shifts. These women shared their harrowing testimonies, revealing the horrors they experienced, including rape, murder, and human trafficking.

One of the most shocking aspects of the story is how Fox's mother, who had always seen herself as a freedom fighter, was actually involved in the Nazi regime, smuggling bombs and guns to aid the Nazis. She later joined an insurrectionist movement that had a hand in the creation of the state of Israel, but her role in this movement has been largely erased from history.

The documentary also sheds light on the darker side of the war, including the rape and murder of women by the Nazis and their collaborators. Fox's mother was one of the many women who were subjected to these atrocities, and her experience is a poignant reminder of the trauma that many survivors endured.

Despite her mother's efforts to conceal her past, Fox has chosen to tell her story, not just for her own sake but also for those who have been silenced or marginalized. "Shame needs to change sides," she says. "The shame doesn't belong to the women. It belongs to the men who did this to them."

As the film's director and writer, Fox has poured her heart and soul into uncovering the truth about her mother's past. The result is a powerful and moving documentary that will leave viewers shaken but also hopeful.

I feel so bad for Marisa Fox, she's been carrying around this heavy burden of not knowing the truth about her mom's wartime secrets for so long ๐Ÿค•. I think it's amazing that she finally found the courage to confront the truth and tell her mom's story, even if it was a tough pill to swallow ๐Ÿ˜“. Her mom's actions are definitely shocking and disturbing, but you have to feel sorry for her too - she was just trying to survive in a time of war and trauma ๐Ÿค.

I also want to highlight how this documentary sheds light on the darker side of history and the women who were often silenced or marginalized during wartime ๐Ÿ’ก. It's not easy to watch, but it's so important that we remember and honor these stories. Marisa Fox is doing a brave thing by sharing her mom's story, and I think it's going to spark some really important conversations about the past and how we can work towards a more compassionate and just future ๐ŸŒŽ๐Ÿ’–

๐Ÿค people need to know the truth about their family histories no matter how painful it may be ๐Ÿ™ the fact that women were subjected to these atrocities and silenced ever since is a stain on humanity's history it's time to shed light on these dark chapters of our past so we can learn from them ๐Ÿ’ก

can't believe what i just learned about my mom's family history it's like, how could they keep this secret for so long? i mean, i always knew she was a strong woman, but this takes the cake i'm still trying to process everything and i have so many questions about why she felt the need to hide her true identity and what drove her to get involved with the Nazi regime it's like, shame needs to change sides, right?

i think what really gets me is how much of a story has been erased from history and how these women were silenced or marginalized i'm not gonna lie, it makes me wanna scream but at the same time, i'm also super inspired by my mom for speaking up now and sharing her truth it's like, we need more stories like this to bring about change.

the documentary looks so powerful, can't wait to watch it ๐Ÿคฏ

๐Ÿคฏ I'm literally shook by this docu. I mean, who knew their own family member was hiding such a dark secret? It's like, you think you know someone, but really you don't. The fact that she was involved with the Nazis and smuggled bombs to aid them is just mind-blowing. And the worst part is how her experiences were erased from history. I feel so bad for the women who suffered through this and were silenced.

I'm also impressed by Marisa Fox's courage in exposing the truth about her mother's past, even if it was hard for her to do so. She's saying that shame belongs to the men who did these things to women, not the women themselves. That's such a powerful message.

I don't know how I would react if this were my own family member's story... I think I'd be both horrified and fascinated at the same time. ๐Ÿ˜ฑ

I'M FREAKING OUT ABOUT THIS DOCUMENTARY!!! IT'S SO POWERFUL AND SHOCKING!!! THE IDEA THAT SOMEONE COULD LIE TO THEIR OWN FAMILY FOR SO LONG ABOUT SUCH DARK SECRETS IS JUST MIND-BLOWING!!! I MEAN, CAN YOU IMAGINE KEEPING A LIFE-LONG SECRET FROM YOUR CHILDREN AND FAMILY Members?! ๐Ÿคฏ IT'S JUST TOO MUCH TO HANDLE!!! THE FACT THAT THIS WOMAN WAS INVOLVED WITH THE NAZI REGIME AND SMUGGLED BOMBS AND GUNS TO THEM IS JUST SO TRULY TERRIFYING!!! WE NEED MORE STORIES LIKE THIS BEING SHARED TO RAISE AWARENESS ABOUT THE DARK SIDE OF HISTORY AND TO HELP THOSE WHO HAVE BEEN SILENCED OR MARGINALIZED!!!

๐Ÿคฏ I'm still trying to wrap my head around the fact that some of these "freedom fighters" were actually involved with the Nazis... it just blows my mind how much we can learn when our families' stories aren't sugarcoated.

I think what's really interesting is how this documentary highlights the trauma and shame that women like Marisa Fox's mother endured during the war. It's a powerful reminder that even though they were victims, it's not okay to erase or silence their experiences just because of societal expectations around masculinity and heroism.

The part about Marisa Fox choosing to tell her mother's story despite knowing how ashamed her family would be is really inspiring... I mean, I think we're still talking about a lot of women today who have been silenced for the same reasons. ๐Ÿ’ช

๐Ÿšจ๐Ÿ“บ OMG, have you seen the latest stats on Holocaust survivors? ๐Ÿคฏ Over 200,000 women were imprisoned in forced labor camps during WWII! ๐Ÿ’” And did you know that 70% of these women went on to experience PTSD and depression afterwards? ๐Ÿ˜ฑ It's like, we're still dealing with the trauma from over 80 years ago!

And let's talk about the documentary "My Underground Mother" for a sec ๐Ÿ“Š. The film highlights how Marisa Fox uncovered her mother's hidden identity, which involved lying about her age, name, and even being part of the Nazi regime ๐Ÿคฏ. I mean, can you imagine if our parents had to keep such secrets from us? ๐Ÿ˜ฑ

But what really gets me is how Fox's mom was involved in smuggling bombs and guns to aid the Nazis... ๐Ÿšซ Yeah, that's a whole different level of uncomfortable. And the fact that her role in the creation of Israel has been erased from history is just wild ๐Ÿ”ฎ.

The stats are in: 75% of women who experienced trauma during WWII still report symptoms today ๐Ÿ˜ฉ. We need to keep sharing stories like Fox's and shine a light on the darker side of history ๐Ÿ‘€.

"When the going gets tough, the tough get going." ๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿฝ Those who were forced to live in secrecy and silence for so long deserve to have their stories finally told. It takes immense courage to confront the truth about one's own family history, especially when it's been hidden or distorted. I think this documentary is a testament to the power of bravery and determination.

๐Ÿค” this doco sounds super intense, i mean who knew their own mum was hiding such dark secrets? ๐Ÿคฏ it's crazy how Fox had to dig for 15 yrs to get the truth out, that takes a lot of courage & dedication ๐Ÿ’ช I'm not sure if it's right to judge her mom though, maybe she was doing what she thought was best at the time or whatever ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ

man I'm blown away by this docu ๐Ÿคฏ my mind is reeling thinking about all the lies and secrets that people keep, especially when it comes to their families and histories. it's crazy how Marisa Fox had to dig so deep to uncover her mom's true story and even then, she found out that the truth was way more complicated than she thought ๐Ÿค”

i think this docu is a great reminder of the importance of listening to each other's stories and being open to the complexities of history. it's not always easy to confront the darker aspects of our past, but by sharing these truths, we can work towards healing and understanding ๐ŸŒŽ

for me, the most striking part of this story is how Marisa Fox chose to tell her mom's story despite all the secrets and shame surrounding it. it's a powerful message about the importance of speaking truth to power and not letting shame silence marginalized voices ๐Ÿ’–

can't believe what i just read... woman discovers her mom was part of nazi regime ๐Ÿคฏ and had been lying to family about it for years. how can we move forward from this kind of trauma and silence? the fact that she was a spy and smuggled bombs but also got raped and murdered is just devastating. it's like, why does shame belong to the survivors and not the perpetrators? we need to remember the past so we don't repeat it ๐Ÿ’”

๐Ÿคฏ I'm still reeling from watching this docu - it's like, you feel so bad for the woman who was lying to everyone, including her own daughter ๐Ÿ˜”. But at the same time, you can't help but be like, "wow, how did she get away with all that?" ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ I mean, she was basically a Nazi collaborator and yet people still trusted her? ๐Ÿ™„ It's just crazy.

And what really gets me is how she was part of this underground group fighting against the British army, but then later became an insurrectionist movement that helped create Israel... it's like, your actions have consequences, right? ๐Ÿค” I guess you could say she was living two different lives and it's just messed up.

I love that her daughter is finally telling her story, though - it's like, a form of justice or something ๐Ÿ™. And the way the docu shows how women were treated during WWII is just heartbreaking... all those girls who were subjected to rape, murder, human trafficking... ugh ๐Ÿ˜ฉ. It's like, we can't let that kind of trauma be erased from history.

Anyway, I'm gonna go process this for a bit ๐Ÿคฏ.

๐Ÿคฏ just watched this docu on my aunt who was part of that underground group in WW2 and OMG it's wild she lied to everyone about her identity including her age and where she lived ๐Ÿ™ˆ I feel bad for all the women who were forced into labor camps and experienced such trauma they're not even remembered by history ๐Ÿค• but this docu is a game changer in revealing their stories and bringing shame to those men who did this to them ๐Ÿ’โ€โ™€๏ธ it's like our understanding of WW2 is so wrong we've been told these women were heroes when really they were just victims ๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐Ÿ’ผ

I'm still trying to wrap my head around this doco ๐Ÿคฏ. I mean, who knew their mom was involved with the Nazis? It's like something out of a spy thriller, right? But at the same time, it's just so sad and messed up ๐Ÿ˜”. I think what really gets me is how her mother tried to cover it all up for years, pretending to be this heroic figure when in reality she was part of something way more sinister ๐Ÿคฅ.

I love that the daughter, Marisa Fox, is telling her mom's story though - it's like a double-edged sword, you know? On one hand, you're shedding light on some pretty dark history, but on the other hand, it's also potentially damaging to your family's legacy ๐Ÿ˜ฌ. I can imagine it's not easy for Marisa to confront all this, but at least she's doing her research and trying to get to the truth ๐Ÿ’ก.

Anyway, I gotta say, this doco has definitely given me a lot to think about ๐Ÿคฏ. It's a wild ride, for sure!

OMG, can you even imagine finding out your mom was part of something so deep and dark? ๐Ÿคฏ Like, I'm all for women empowerment and all, but this woman's secrets are WILD. ๐Ÿ˜ฑ She was a spy and saboteur in WWII, but also worked with the Nazis... like what?! ๐Ÿšซ And she lied about her whole life to protect her own identity? That's some next-level drama right there! ๐Ÿ’ฅ I'm seriously gonna have to watch this docu, sounds like a total wild ride. ๐Ÿ‘€

๐Ÿคฏ I'm still trying to wrap my head around the revelation in this docu - it's like, you think you know your family members, right? But sometimes the truth is way more complicated than you thought ๐Ÿค”. The fact that Marisa Fox's mom was part of a Nazi regime and even smuggled bombs to aid them is just mind-blowing ๐Ÿ˜ฑ.

It's crazy how some people can change their stories so easily, especially when it comes to sensitive topics like war and trauma ๐Ÿ’”. But you know what's more shocking? How the shame has been passed down through generations, making it harder for survivors to speak out ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ.

I think this docu is gonna be a real game-changer in terms of getting these kinds of stories out there. It's not just about exposing secrets, but also about shedding light on some really dark periods in history ๐Ÿ”ฆ. Marisa Fox's bravery in sharing her mom's story is definitely inspiring ๐Ÿ’ช.

๐Ÿ˜ฑ I'm low-key shocked by Marisa Fox's story ๐Ÿคฏ. I mean, who knew their mom was involved with the Nazis? ๐Ÿ’” It's wild how she used to be seen as a freedom fighter, but really she was just a pawn in a much bigger game ๐Ÿ‘Š. I think it's super brave of her daughter to expose this and bring attention to the women who were silenced or marginalized ๐Ÿ™Œ. The fact that Marisa Fox is telling her own mom's story instead of covering it up is like, totally empowering ๐Ÿ’ช. We need more stories like this coming out so we can learn from the past and move forward ๐Ÿš€.

๐Ÿคฏ just watched this doco about a woman who had a super complicated life during ww2 ๐Ÿ™Œ she was part of a radical jewish group fighting against the british, but it turns out her mum had been lying about everything ๐Ÿ˜ฑ like, she wasn't even 16 when she was "spying" and stuff, but got imprisoned in a camp with other girls who were traumatized for life ๐Ÿ‘€ also, her mum was involved with the nazis ๐Ÿค• and helped smuggle guns to them... wild ๐Ÿ’ฅ i feel bad for her, but also glad that she's telling her story so we can learn from it ๐Ÿ™
