R&B star Jill Scott: 'I like mystery – I love Sade but I don't know what she had for breakfast'

For me, life is about embracing the unknown and finding joy in every moment. When I was a kid, my mother took me to a go-go bar where I learned not to judge people quickly. She wanted me to experience life's complexities firsthand. Instead of being uncomfortable, it taught me to observe and appreciate the beauty in differences.

My music often captures the essence of human emotions, from laughter to tears. When you connect with your true self, you become more authentic, and that's what my songs aim to convey. I'm all about embracing individuality and telling stories that resonate with people worldwide.

I've never been one for neat boxes or labels. As a Black woman artist, I want to share the full spectrum of human experience through my work. Sade is one of my inspirations, but while we share similarities in our love of soulful music, there's no knowing what she had for breakfast – it's the mystery that makes her so intriguing!

When creating art, you must balance vulnerability and protection. My role as Mma Ramotswe in "The No 1 Ladies Detective Agency" TV series was an incredible experience, but I wouldn't have done it without a director who trusted me to bring depth and nuance.

DJ AG's street performances sparked something special when I participated with him in Camden. It showed that art can transcend boundaries and be shared freely. As for my hypothetical teaching career, I'd want to inspire students through music-infused lessons, blending words with rhythm to make learning an immersive experience.

Lastly, it's amusing how often people get me confused with Jill Scott the footballer! Maybe one day we'll have lunch together – though, I think she'd find me more interesting than a game of football.

I LOVE HOW THIS ARTIST IS ALL ABOUT BEING TRUE TO HERSELF AND SHARING THE RICHEST HUMAN EXPERIENCES THROUGH MUSIC!!! 🎶🔥 IT'S SO COOL THAT SHE'S NOT AFRAID OF BEING DIFFERENT AND INSPIRES PEOPLE TO DO THE SAME. I'VE GOT A FEW FAVE ARTISTS LIKE HER WHO TELL STORIES THAT MAKE YOU FEEL ALL THE EMOTIONS!!! 💖

I love what you're saying about embracing the unknown and finding joy in every moment 🌟 You know, it's so easy to get caught up in our own little bubbles, but that's where the magic happens – when we step outside those boundaries, we can discover new things about ourselves and others. It's like I always say, life is a beautiful mess of imperfections, and that's what makes it so special 🤗 DJ AG sounds like an amazing artist, and I love how you want to blend words with rhythm in your teaching career – isn't learning the best time to be creative?

lol what's up with all these inspirational quotes 🙄 anyway, so I'm reading about this super cool artist and I gotta say, they seem like a total goth chick at heart... just kidding! 😜 but seriously, can you imagine having to correct people who think you're Jill Scott the footballer? lololol that's like, totally priceless! and omg, being compared to Sade is like, the ultimate compliment – I mean, she's basically the queen of soul music 🤩 so yeah, if they said they were inspired by her, I'm 100% buying it 💯

omg, i totally agree w/ her about finding joy in every moment 🌞 u know how stressful uni can be sometimes? like, we're always trying to cram so much info into our heads & meet those tight deadlines... anywayz 💡 i think it's super important to find ways 2 relax n enjoy life outside a academia. she's right, we should def experiment w/ new things n step outta our comfort zones 🎨 u know who else does dat? our school's art club! they're always pushin' boundaries & creatin' amazing stuff 🤩

I love that Sade is her inspiration but also feels like no one knows her beyond music 🎶💁‍♀️ - it's like people don't even know what kind of tea she drinks in the morning ☕😂. For me as a parent, I try to expose my kid to all kinds of experiences and cultures so they can grow up understanding that everyone has their own story to tell 🌎👥. They need to learn about people's differences in the same way Sade does - with an open heart and mind 💖. My kid is always asking me why we go to concerts or festivals, and I say it's because music can bring people together and make us feel less alone 🤗. DJ AG sounds like a cool performer tho - maybe one day my kid will get to meet them and learn from their energy ✨

I love that Sade's mystique is what makes her so captivating 💫 She's like an enigma wrapped in soul music 🕺 I also appreciate how she defies labels and expectation - it's refreshing to see someone who's unapologetically herself, even if we don't know much about the person behind the talent 😊 DJ AG's street performances are so cool too - there's something special when art breaks down barriers 🌎 The fact that you've had experiences like participating in a performance with him and playing Mma Ramotswe is amazing - it shows how creativity can bring people together ❤️ And lol, I'm sure Jill Scott the footballer would be entertained by your witty one-liner 😂

just watched this doc on Sade and it got me thinking about embracing our uniqueness 🤔https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=... [link]

i mean, life is all about finding that balance between being vulnerable and protecting ourselves, right? 💕 for me, music is a huge part of that. it's like, when i'm creating art, i want to tap into those feelings and emotions that make us human 🎶

anyway, just saw this vid on DJ AG's street performances and man... they're like the ultimate way to spread love and positivity 💖https://www Vimeo.com/... [link]

and omg, have you seen that interview with Jill Scott? she's hilarious! btw, just wanted to set the record straight about who i am lol 😂https://www.elle.com/... [link]

OMG, can u believe that Sade is literally the queen of subtlety? I mean, she's like the ultimate mystery woman, right? 🤐 I love how she brings this soulful vibe without ever being too over-the-top. And I'm totally with her on embracing individuality and sharing the full spectrum of human experience through art. It's all about self-expression, you feel? 💖 As for that DJ AG street performance in Camden... man, it was like magic happened! The way they brought people together, it just shows how powerful art can be 🎉

LOL @ how many misconceptions about you are out there 🤣! It's dope to see your perspective on embracing differences and individuality. You're right, art is all about expression and connection. I love that you mention Sade as an inspiration – she's definitely a legend 💃🏽.

It's interesting that you talk about balancing vulnerability and protection when creating art. As someone who's passionate about online community guidelines 🤔, it's cool to see how these principles can apply to other areas of life, like music and performance.

Your vision for teaching through music-infused lessons sounds amazing 🎵! Who knows, maybe one day we'll get to see that happen in real life 🌟. And haha, sorry about Jill Scott the footballer mix-up 😂 – you're definitely more interesting than a game of football! 👏

😊 I'm really loving the vibe of this latest album by DJ AG - the soulful beats and lyrics are so relatable. But, to be real, some of the industry politics can be super frustrating 🤯 like how artists always get judged for their style or genre. Like, who cares? Music is all about self-expression and vibes, right?

I love how she talks about not judging people quickly, that's such a valuable lesson. And I'm with her on embracing individuality - it's so refreshing to see an artist being true to themselves, even when that means not fitting into neat boxes 🌈.

As for the tea about Sade, lol, I can imagine how intriguing she must be! It's crazy how much inspiration we get from others, but also how unique each of us is. And omg, a music-infused teaching career? That sounds like an amazing way to learn and grow 🎵📚.

One thing that does make me slightly nervous though is the online drama around her - not just with Jill Scott, but other artists who get compared or misrepresented. It's like, can't we all just appreciate each other's talents without all the extra stress? 💁‍♀️

I'm not really sure about this whole 'emerging artists' scene in London... it feels like everyone's trying to be unique but still kinda sounds the same? 😐 Like, I love Sade too, but can we get some new vibes? Maybe instead of comparing yourself to other artists, try finding your own rhythm? 🎶 And btw, who needs a fancy music degree when you've got passion and creativity?

🤩 just saw this crazy convo about Lauryn Hill and people are still debating whether she should come back to music 🎵 her message is all about embracing the unknown and finding joy in differences...like that time she sneaked onto an airplane with her kids and ended up getting arrested 😂 anyway, I love how she speaks to individuality and authenticity through her art...also can we talk about Sade for a sec? 🙌

IDK WHY PEOPLE GET SO EXCITED ABOUT FAMOUS PEOPLE'S PERSONAL STUFF!!! CAN'T WE JUST APPRECIATE THEIR MUSIC OR ACTING SKILLS INSTEAD OF TRYING TO FIND OUT WHAT THEY HAD FOR BREAKFAST??? 🤷‍♀️🍳 AND I FEEL YOU ABOUT DJ AG'S STREET PERFORMANCES, IT WAS LIKE NOTHING I'D EVER SEEN BEFORE!!! THE WAY HE COULD GET A CROWD MOVING WITH JUST HIS MUSIC AND ENERGY!!! 💃🏽🎶
