Post your questions for Geoff Barrow, of Portishead, Beak> and more

A look behind the curtain at the career of Geoff Barrow, mastermind behind Portishead and Beak>, is long overdue. For years, fans have been left wondering what to expect from this highly versatile musician, whose work spans multiple genres including trip-hop, psych-rock, film scores, and even hip-hop.

Born in Somerset, Barrow grew up in the very town that would eventually inspire his band's name, Portishead. Alongside Beth Gibbons and Adrian Utley, he created a distinctive sound that blended elements of electronica and rock to produce a brooding, atmospheric sound that captivated listeners worldwide. The group released three critically-acclaimed albums before disbanding, although the trio still perform live from time to time.

In 2007, Barrow formed Beak>, which would become his second musical vehicle. Over the years, Beak> has produced four acclaimed albums and collaborated with a host of other artists on film scores and projects. However, in 2024, Barrow announced that he was leaving Beak> to focus on other pursuits.

Since then, Barrow's creative output has expanded exponentially. He founded Invada Records, which has released music by an array of talented artists including Billy Nomates, Gazelle Twin, and Quakers โ€“ a hip-hop project he also directs. His work in film scoring has been highly praised, with credits on the soundtracks for Stranger Things, Drive, Red Dead Redemption, and more.

But what's next? Barrow is now turning his attention to film production, launching Invada Films as a way of bringing his unique creative vision to the big screen. The label's first film, Game, will be released in November, starring Sleaford Mods' Jason Williamson, and promises to be a thrilling thriller set against the backdrop of the 1993 rave scene.
