Port Authority plans to raise PATH fare to $4 in 2029, eliminate off-peak toll discounts

Port Authority Announces Fare Hike for PATH Train, Abandons Off-Peak Discounts

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey announced plans to increase the cost of a single trip on the PATH train by 25 cents in spring 2026, with subsequent annual hikes until it reaches $4 by 2029. This significant fare increase will come as a blow to commuters, who have been experiencing rising costs for transportation in both New York and New Jersey.

The agency's decision to phase out off-peak discounts on tolls for E-ZPass users is expected to bring in an additional $75 million annually. While the Port Authority claims that this move will be offset by increased revenue from taxis and for-hire vehicles at regional airports, critics argue that it will only serve to further burden commuters.

In light of these increasing costs, New Jersey Governor-elect Mikie Sherrill has vowed to address affordability concerns in her state, while New York City mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani campaigned on making the MTA's buses free. The PATH fare hike is seen as a test case for these efforts.

However, Port Authority officials argue that the fare increase will be accompanied by expanded service and improvements. Trains will begin to run more frequently, with increased frequencies during morning rush hour and weekend services starting in May. Weekend trains on the Journal Square-33rd Street via Hoboken line will double in frequency, while trains between Hoboken and the World Trade Center will run every six minutes.

The agency's five-year capital plan, valued at $45 billion, includes airport upgrades, a new bus terminal, and improvements to PATH trains. In comparison, the MTA's current five-year plan is worth $68 billion.

While officials claim that their decisions are guided by the principle of putting riders first, many will be left wondering whether this measure truly benefits commuters or merely serves the interests of the Port Authority.

Ugh I'm so frustrated about this PATH train fare hike 🀯! They're just gonna suck more money outta our pockets and we won't even get to enjoy any new services that'll make it worth it, right? πŸš‚ I mean, 25 cents might not seem like a lot but it adds up when you're commuting twice a day. And what's the deal with phasing out off-peak discounts? It's just gonna be another way for them to nickel and dime us. The Port Authority is always talking about "putting riders first" but I think they've got other priorities πŸ€‘ like lining their own pockets. I'm not sure if New Jersey Governor-elect Sherrill or NYC mayor-elect Mamdani are doing enough to address the problem...or if they just don't care πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ

πŸ€” It's not because things are so different now, they're just different from what we were used to before 😊. This fare hike is a big change for commuters, and it's gonna be hard for them to adjust. The Port Authority thinks it'll bring in more revenue, but will it really help the people or just pad their pockets? πŸ€‘ We'll have to wait and see if this move is made in the best interest of riders...

Ugh, I remember when you could take the PATH train without breaking the bank! πŸ™„ Now it's like they're charging us an arm and a leg just to get across the Hudson River. And off-peak discounts? Gone? What's next, raising the cost of air? I get that we need money for infrastructure, but 25 cents seems steep. I'm more worried about how this is gonna affect regular folks who can't afford it. I'm all for better service and whatnot, but can't they find a way to make it work without nickel-and-diming us? πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ

oh man, a 25 cent hike on the PATH train is a total no-go πŸš«πŸ’Έ. commuters in nj and ny are already feeling the pinch with rising costs, and now they're gonna have to shell out even more cash just to get to work? it's like, what's next? πŸ˜’

i'm all for some improvements, but let's be real, the port authority is just trying to line their pockets πŸ’Έ. $75 million a year from phasing out off-peak discounts? that's cute πŸ€‘. they're gonna be stuck with a bunch of disgruntled commuters and no love from the politicians πŸ€¦β€β™€οΈ.

governor sherrill's all about addressing affordability concerns, but it seems like the port authority is just making things worse πŸ™…β€β™‚οΈ. meanwhile, zohran mamdani's talking about making mta buses free? that's a whole different story πŸš—πŸ’¨. maybe they should focus on fixing the PATH train instead of counting their profits πŸ’ΈπŸ‘Ž

Ugh, can't believe they're raising PATH fares again 🀯! It's like they just don't care about people who rely on that train for work or whatever. And off-peak discounts are basically gone? That's just ridiculous. I get it, they need the cash to fix up some airports and stuff, but do they really have to hurt commuters in the process?

And don't even get me started on the new service schedules πŸš‚. More trains running during morning rush hour is nice, I guess, but what about people who can't afford the fare hike? Do they just have to sacrifice their commute time or something? It's like they're expecting us to just be all happy and grateful for our train ride πŸ˜’.

I mean, I love a good free bus ride as much as the next person 🚌, but MTA's got some serious competition with PATH on this one. Let's see how that 5-year capital plan of theirs pans out πŸ€‘.

Ugh, PATH train fares are about to get super expensive πŸš‚πŸ˜©. I'm a NYC commuter and I hate when they raise prices on us. I use my E-ZPass for tolls all the time and now they're gonna charge me more? Not cool. They say it's gonna offset revenue from taxis and Uber, but I think that's just a bunch of hooey πŸ€‘. What really matters is if it's gonna make our commute better or not. From what I've heard, trains are gonna run more often, which is awesome, but does that make up for the price hike? I hope so, 'cause I'm already feeling like my wallet is getting squeezed πŸ’Έ.

πŸš‚πŸ˜ A 25 cent hike in PATH train fare might not seem like a lot, but for those who rely on it to get around NYC and NJ, that's a decent chunk of change... especially with prices going up everywhere else πŸ€‘. Time will tell if the extra money from taxis and airports really adds up πŸ€”

Ugh, another reason for me to hate Mondays πŸ˜’. A 25 cent hike on a PATH train ticket? That's just cruel. And what's up with phasing out off-peak discounts? I mean, who comes up with this stuff? It's just gonna be more money sucked from the commuters' pockets. $75 million annually is nice for the Port Authority, but where's that dough coming from, huh? πŸ€‘

πŸš‚πŸ’Έ I'm all about that commute life, but this fare hike is straight outta a bad movie πŸŽ₯. I get it, costs are rising and we need to find ways to make up for it, but 25 cents may not be enough πŸ’Έ. It feels like the Port Authority is nickel-and-diming us to death πŸ€‘.

I'm all about seeing more frequent trains (πŸš‚πŸ‘) and improved service, especially during rush hour πŸ•°οΈ. But phasing out off-peak discounts? That's just rubbing salt in the wound πŸ’”. And what's up with the 'we're gonna make up for it with airport upgrades' vibe? It feels like they're trying to get us to calm down with a shiny new bus terminal ✈️.

I'm keeping an eye on Governor Sherrill and Mayor Mamdani, though 🀞. If they follow through on their promises to address affordability concerns, maybe this fare hike won't be so bad after all 🌟. But for now, it's just another example of how the Port Authority is trying to make a buck off our hard-earned cash πŸ’ΈπŸ˜’

OMG, u guys, i cant even believe theyre increasing PATH fares like that πŸ€―πŸ’Έ! its already so expensive to get around NYC & NJ, and now theyre taking away our discounts? That $75 million a year is def not gonna make up for the suffering of commuters 😩. Plus, the fact that trains are only getting more frequent in the morning rush hour? Like, what about the rest of us who need public transport? πŸš«πŸŒƒ

omg I'm so done with these fare hikes... like I get it, costs add up but 25 cents is a bit harsh, right? πŸ€‘ and what's with phasing out off-peak discounts tho? that just means people on tighter budgets are gonna have to shell out more $$$ for the same ride. 😩 I'm all for expanding services and stuff but not if it means commuters get hit harder πŸ’Έ

omg, can you believe this?? they're gonna raise the fare on the path train AGAIN?! 🀯 i know it's been a while since they last did it, but 25 cents might not seem like a lot to some people, but for those who rely on public transportation to get to work every day, that's a LOT of money! and now they're gonna phase out off-peak discounts too?! 😑 what are we even supposed to do?!

i'm so worried about the commuters in new york and jersey, they already have to deal with rising costs for housing, food, and basically everything else. can't they just leave our transportation costs alone?! πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ i know the port authority says it's gonna be offset by increased revenue from taxis and for-hire vehicles, but that doesn't seem like a very convincing excuse to me!

πŸš‚πŸ˜¬ I'm not surprised about this fare hike news... like, it's been coming for a while now. Commuters in NJ and NY are already dealing with crazy prices on the trains and buses. And what's up with abandoning off-peak discounts? That was literally the only thing that kept me from giving up on public transport. Now they're gonna hit us with more cash... like, who's gonna afford it? πŸ€‘ The officials keep saying it's all about expanding service, but let's be real, I've been taking the PATH for years and it feels like they just wanna rip people off. πŸ˜’

I'm telling you, something fishy is going on here 🐟. A 25 cent fare hike in just a few years? That's like, a slippery slope, you know? They're gonna make it so expensive to use the PATH train that people will be forced to drive or take buses... and then they'll sell ads on those too πŸ“Ί! I mean, what about all these promises from Sherrill and Mamdani to make public transportation free? That's just lip service at this point. I'm calling foul, man πŸ˜’. The Port Authority is just trying to line their own pockets while we're stuck paying through the nose for a "better" system... yeah right πŸ™„.

I'm not loving this PATH fare hike πŸ€”... I get it, they need to make some cash, but $4 by 2029? That's just crazy! Comuters are already feeling the pinch with rising costs and increasing traffic, do we really need more on top of that? 🚨 And what about off-peak discounts? Are we really expected to pay full price all the time? I hope Governor Sherrill can do something about this. The increased revenue from taxis and for-hire vehicles might not be as rosy as it sounds. And while expanded service is nice, does that really make up for the higher fares? πŸš‚ I'm just worried that commuters are going to get squeezed even more...

man.. a 25 cent hike on PATH train sounds like a lot especially for people who rely on it for daily commute πŸ€‘ but i guess its good that they're investing in upgrades and more frequent trains? πŸš‚πŸ’¨ plus, those $75 million from phasing out off-peak discounts will definitely come in handy. maybe this is just the start of new initiatives to make public transport more efficient? πŸ€” lets keep an eye on it! 😊

u mad at the port authority for increasing PATH train fares? i feel u, but gotta see it from a different perspective πŸ€”. they're trying to make up for lost revenue from no off-peak discounts and also investing in new service improvements πŸš‚πŸ’¨. the thing is, these costs are rising everywhere - rent, food, housing... it's hard to keep up, even with a decent job πŸ€‘. maybe this fare hike isn't all bad? πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ let's just hope they make good on those promises about expanded service and airport upgrades πŸ’ͺ

omg I cant believe they're increasing the path train fare again πŸš‚πŸ˜¬ like i know prices are rising everywhere but $4 a trip is just insane πŸ’Έ I feel so bad for all the commuters who have to shell out even more cash each month it's gonna be a real struggle for them πŸ‘₯ especially when u gotta factor in the e-zpass tolls too...idk about the new bus terminal and airport upgrades tho πŸ€” maybe that'll make up for it but I'm not holding my breath 😴

Ugh, like what even is going on here? They're gonna raise PATH train fares by 25 cents and then just keep increasing it every year until it's like $4. That's crazy talk! And to make matters worse, they're getting rid of off-peak discounts too. I mean, can't they see that commuters are already struggling with rising costs? It's not fair. They should be figuring out ways to help us out instead of just taking more money from us.

And don't even get me started on the whole "expanding service" thing. Yeah right, like it's gonna make a difference when our fares go up so much. I'm still gonna have to shell out extra cash for a ride home. It's all about lining their own pockets, if you ask me πŸ€‘πŸ˜’.

I mean, Governor Sherrill is talking the talk about affordability, but we'll see how that plays out. And as for Zohran Mamdani's promise of free MTA buses? Yeah, good luck with that too πŸ˜‚.
