Opinion: ‘Until we meet again, brave little cat.’ The heartbreak and taboo of burying our pets | CNN

In recent years, burying our deceased loved ones has become an increasingly common practice, often seen as a way to provide comfort and closure for those left behind. However, what about when it comes to burying our pets? The taboo surrounding pet burial has long been overlooked, with many opting for cheaper alternatives such as cremation or disposal in household waste.

However, the Spanish city of Barcelona has recently announced plans to establish its first public pet cemetery, offering both burials and cremations. The move is a significant step towards normalizing the practice, which is often shunned due to concerns over hygiene and social stigma.

As someone who has researched the history of modern pet burial practices, I was shocked by this news. Barcelona is a densely populated city with limited privately owned land, making it surprising that such a facility had not been established before. The councilor in charge, Eloi Badia, revealed that the initiative was sparked by "constant public demand," highlighting the growing recognition of the importance of providing a dignified and respectful outlet for pet owners to grieve.

Historic records suggest that people have always had a deep connection with their animals, often treating them as beloved members of the family. In fact, gravestones from Victorian-era Britain often feature epitaphs such as "loving friend" or "devoted companion," indicating that pets were highly valued companions in life.

However, as societal attitudes towards human-animal relationships evolve, so too do our approaches to pet burial. Fast-forwarding a few decades, we see gravestones referencing reunions with beloved pets, with owners like the Denny family writing on his epitaph "God bless until we meet again." This is not an isolated incident; the epitaphs of modern pet cemeteries reveal a strong connection between humans and animals that transcends life and death.

As more jurisdictions allow the co-burial of cremated humans and animals, it's clear that our ways of mourning are becoming increasingly accepting. Charities like the RSPCA offer counseling to bereaved pet owners, recognizing the importance of acknowledging and validating these relationships.

While not everyone will be able to afford the estimated €200 per service at Barcelona's new cemetery, there are still many acceptable ways for pet owners to express their grief. Online forums and digital pet cemeteries provide alternatives for those who cannot or choose not to use physical facilities.

The establishment of public pet cemeteries is a significant step forward in recognizing the emotional significance of our relationships with animals. By providing a dignified outlet for grief, these facilities will undoubtedly change the way we mourn our beloved pets and acknowledge the bond that exists between humans and animals.

🐾💕 I'm surprised they're finally making it easier for pet owners to say goodbye to their furry friends in a respectful way. I mean, who doesn't want to put a headstone up with their dog's name and some nice quotes about how much they loved them? 🤣 It just feels like we should be able to do that, you know? And it's not just about the cost - it's about giving people a chance to process their emotions and celebrate the time they had with their pets. I've seen so many people get all teary-eyed on social media when they share pictures of their deceased pets, it's like we're already there! 📸

omg can you believe barcelona is finally opening up a public pet cemetery 🤯🐾😭 i mean i knew it was coming but still its so cool to see them make it official now i've always wanted a spot for my favorite pup's ashes, this is literally the best thing ever 💕🌼 and yeah its crazy how people used to think pet burial was weird or something 🙄 like what even is that? anyway cant wait to visit barcelona's new cemetery with my fave doggo, it'll be such a special place for me to say goodbye 🐾💗

🤔 I think it's pretty cool that Barcelona is setting up a public pet cemetery. It shows that people are finally recognizing how much we care about our furry friends 🐶💕. I mean, why should human deaths be all about fancy funeral homes when we can have a place to say goodbye to our pets too? It's like we're finally accepting that animals are part of the family 👪. I've lost pets myself and it's always been hard to let them go, so this is like a breath of fresh air 😊. Plus, it's not just about the cost – it's about showing respect for the bond between humans and animals. That's something we should all be doing more often 🌟.

🐾💕 omg i think its so cool that barcelona is starting a public pet cemetery! like who wouldn't want to pay respects to their furry friend after they pass away? 🙏 and im all about the idea of normalizing pet burial, it feels so overdue. i mean we have these beautiful cemeteries for humans but our pets get an afterthought 🤷‍♀️. this just shows that people are starting to realize how much we love our pets and they deserve some respect too 💖

idk why it took so long for barcelona to do this 🤷‍♂️, but i guess its about time they normalize pet burials. I mean, its not like people are gonna start digging up their dead pets or anything lol... but seriously, its a pretty cool idea. my dog passed away last year and it was really tough on me, so having a dedicated spot to lay him to rest wouldve been a big comfort. plus, its just nice to know that ppl are starting to recognize the bond we have with our pets 🐶💕

🐾💕 OMG u no i'm so down 4 this new pet cemetery in Barcelona!! its about time we start treatin our furry friends w/ more respect 🙏 like who says pets r just pets? they're part of the fam too! 🤗 and can u believe it's finally gettin the recognition it deserves? 💁‍♀️ i mean, think about all those ppl out there who've lost their best buds & are still tryin to figger out how 2 grieve without feelin like they're doin somethin weird 🤔 this is a game changer, imo! 👍 and let's be real, who doesn't love the idea of havin a gravestone w/ ur pet's name on it? 💀❤️ its not just about the price point either, its about makin sure ppl can say goodbye in a way that feels right 4 them 🌸

I think its about time 🐾💕. Pets are part of the family, it feels weird to just chuck them in the bin. Its not like they're going anywhere 🙅‍♂️. The more we start to see pets as companions rather than just property, the more we need a proper way to say goodbye 💔. Online cemeteries are cool, but theres something special about digging a hole and saying your final words 🌼.
