NYC seeks volunteers for overnight count as Mamdani begins to tackle homelessness

I remember when NYC used to be so much more affordable back in my grandfather's day . I mean, you could get a decent meal for like $5 at one of those old-school diners, and a hot dog from a street vendor was only 50 cents! Nowadays, it feels like the city is losing its soul . The homeless crisis is definitely something we need to address, but have we really made progress? 4,500 people still living on the streets is just crazy . I wish they'd get more funding for those Safe Haven beds - that's a great initiative! As for volunteers, I'll def sign up to help count those folks on the subway ...I guess it's better than nothing

OMG u guys ! So NYC is tryna count their homeless population & it's kinda cool that they're encouraging people to join in? Like, I get it, we gotta help those who need it most . But at the same time, I feel like this whole thing is kinda crazy? I mean, 4k+ ppl on the streets is wild !

I'm also kinda curious how NYC's right-to-shelter mandate works... does it really make a huge difference that 3% of homeless people live on the streets compared to other cities? Maybe we can learn from them?

And I gotta say, it's awesome that they're trying to connect ppl with permanent homes - like, that's what we should all be striving for ! But for real though, who's gonna sign up for this overnight count? Does anyone know if there's any kinda incentives or perks?

I don't know how many more ways they need us to count people on the streets . I mean, I get it, the city needs resources and services, but can't we just, like, figure out how to provide them already? We're talking about 4,500 people who are struggling to survive on the streets... meanwhile, some are living in super comfortable areas because of that right-to-shelter mandate . And now they want us to count even more people so we can give them services? It feels like a never-ending cycle. And what's with all these different types of shelters and beds? More Safe Haven and stabilization beds is just code for 'we're trying to move people out of the streets'. I'm not saying it's all bad, but let's focus on solving the root problem rather than counting people all day .

OMG, like, I'm so down for this ! The city's homeless population is already super vulnerable, and we need everyone's help to make sure they're getting the right support . That 3% of homeless individuals living on the streets in NYC is crazy, but at least our right-to-shelter mandate is trying to do something about it . And those Safe Haven beds? Lifesavers! The fact that over 1k people were connected to permanent homes is amazing . We gotta keep pushing for more funding and resources to help these folks get back on their feet .
