Nasa readies its most powerful rocket for round-the-moon flight

NASA Prepares for Historic Moon Return with Powerful SLS Rocket, Crewed by Astronauts

A historic mission to send astronauts around the moon and back again is set to take off from Kennedy Space Center in Florida as early as February 6. This Artemis II mission marks a major milestone in NASA's ambitious plan to return humans to the lunar surface, with the powerful Space Launch System (SLS) rocket at its core.

The four-person crew will embark on a 685,000-mile journey that will test life support and communication systems, as well as practice docking maneuvers. This mission is significant not only for NASA but also for the entire space community, with many experts hailing it as a "step towards what we in the space world always dreamed of: the sustained human and robotic exploration of the moon and one day on to Mars."

The SLS rocket, which stands nearly 100 meters tall, will be fueled with over 700,000 gallons of propellant, producing sufficient thrust to fly at speeds of up to 24,500mph. The mission's success is crucial, as it paves the way for future Artemis missions that aim to land astronauts near the lunar south pole as early as next year.

The crew members, Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, Christina Koch, and Jeremy Hansen, will be the first to travel around the moon since Apollo 17 in 1972. Koch will become the first woman to do so, while Glover will be the first person of color to venture beyond low Earth orbit.

While some see this mission as a "second space race" against China, which hopes to put its own boots on the moon by 2030, NASA officials remain confident in their plans. As Sean Duffy, former acting administrator, said: "We're going to win." The US has identified 14 alternative launch dates before mid-April in case of technical issues or bad weather.

The Artemis II mission will also serve as a test flight for the Orion spacecraft, with its crew performing manual maneuvers and testing emergency procedures. A final push from the European service module will send the crew to the moon, where they will travel more than 230,000 miles before looping back in a giant figure-of-eight trajectory.

For all NASA's preparations and the astronauts' extensive training, there is always an element of surprise. As Jeff Radigan, Artemis II's lead flight director, noted: "This is a test flight and there are things that are going to be unexpected." Nevertheless, with confidence and determination driving the mission forward, NASA is poised to make history once again.

๐Ÿš€๐Ÿ˜ฌ they're really taking it back to the moon? 1972 was ages ago... what if this mission gets canceled or something goes wrong ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™‚๏ธ anyway, China's gonna be there too, and that's like, super soon ๐Ÿ•ฐ๏ธ NASA thinks they can win a space race, but what about all the other stuff that could go wrong? ๐Ÿšซ

๐Ÿš€ I think this is gonna be a game changer for us. It's crazy to think we're sending humans around the moon again after all these years. The SLS rocket sounds massive ๐Ÿคฏ, and the fact that Christina Koch is becoming the first woman to do so is amazing ๐Ÿ‘. But what really gets me is how much this mission represents for the future - Mars, here we come! ๐ŸŒŒ The competition with China might be fierce, but I think NASA's got this. They've been preparing for years, and it's awesome to see all these talented astronauts on board ๐Ÿ‘. Fingers crossed everything goes smoothly and they make it back safely ๐Ÿ’ซ. This is gonna be one epic mission! ๐Ÿš€

omg can u believe nasa is actually gonna send ppl back 2 the moon?! ๐Ÿš€ like, it's been a looong time since those apollo days so its dope 2 see new gen astronauts taking on this historic mission!!! i think its awesome that christina koch is gonna be the 1st woman 2 do it & jeremy hansen is gonna be the 1st person of color 2 go beyond low earth orbit ๐Ÿ™Œ & let's not forget about china trying 2 catch up but like nasa has got this!!! ๐Ÿ’ช

๐Ÿš€ I'm so stoked about this Artemis II mission! It's been ages since we've seen humans around the moon, and now we're gonna have a whole crew of astronauts on board ๐Ÿค. I know some people are saying it's like a "second space race" against China, but let's be real, NASA's been working tirelessly to get this right ๐Ÿ’ช. Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, Christina Koch, and Jeremy Hansen are the real MVPs here ๐Ÿ‘. And can we talk about how historic it is for Christina Koch to be the first woman on a lunar mission around the moon? ๐Ÿšซ That in itself is worth celebrating! As for some people calling this a "step towards Mars", I'm all for it ๐ŸŒŒ. We gotta keep pushing those boundaries and seeing what's possible ๐Ÿ‘Š. Bring on that SLS rocket and let's make some history ๐Ÿ”ฅ

I don't know man... ๐Ÿค” this moon return thingy seems like just another way for NASA to burn through our tax dollars. Like, what's the point of all this? We can barely maintain our own infrastructure on Earth and they're trying to send people all the way back to the moon? It's just a bunch of hubris if you ask me ๐Ÿš€

And don't even get me started on the Space Launch System (SLS) rocket. 700,000 gallons of propellant? That's insane! We could be using that money to fix our own roads or something. Not to mention the environmental impact of launching all those rockets into space. It's just not worth it in my opinion ๐ŸŒŽ

I mean, I know some people are hyped about this "second space race" against China, but let's not forget that we've been trying to get back to the moon for decades and we still can't even maintain a reliable satellite network on Earth. Let's focus on fixing our own problems before we start competing with other countries in space ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ

I'm literally hyped for this Artemis II mission ๐Ÿš€! Like, can you imagine astronauts returning to the moon after so many years? It's like a new chapter in space exploration ๐Ÿ“š. I'm also low-key excited that Christina Koch is going to be the first woman to do it - women in STEM are total rockstars ๐Ÿ’ช. And, of course, Victor Glover being the first person of color to venture beyond low Earth orbit is a huge deal too ๐ŸŒŽ. But what really gets me pumped up is that this mission is all about paving the way for future missions and exploring Mars one day ๐Ÿš€๐Ÿ’ซ. It's like, we're not just doing this for NASA or the US - we're doing it for humanity as a whole. And let's be real, the fact that we get to see astronauts in Orion spacecraft with manual maneuvers is giving me major NASA goosebumps ๐Ÿ˜†. Bring on February 6 and let's make some history! ๐ŸŽ‰

๐Ÿš€๐Ÿ˜Š this is gonna be lit! i mean, can you believe we're actually sending humans back to the moon? it's like something out of a sci-fi movie! ๐ŸŽฅ i'm so hyped for the crew, especially christina koch - she's breaking all sorts of barriers and inspiring people everywhere. ๐ŸŒ• and let's be real, 24,500mph is just INSANE ๐Ÿคฏ can't wait to see what they achieve on this mission... fingers crossed everything goes smoothly ๐Ÿ’ซ

๐Ÿš€ Just saw the stats on the SLS rocket's thrust ๐Ÿคฏ 24,500mph is crazy! That's like flying around the Earth like 5 times in an hour ๐Ÿ•ฐ๏ธ And did you know that the Orion spacecraft has to withstand temperatures of up to 2,000ยฐC during re-entry into the atmosphere? ๐Ÿ”ฅ The Artemis II mission also marks a major milestone for women in space, with Christina Koch becoming the first woman to travel around the moon ๐ŸŒ•. But what's really impressive is the amount of propellant used - over 700,000 gallons! That's like fueling up an entire fleet of cargo planes ๐Ÿšš.

I'm low-key hyped for this Artemis II mission ๐Ÿš€๐Ÿ’ฅ! Think about it, we're on track to have humans back on the moon in like 2 years? That's insane! The fact that Christina Koch is gonna be the first woman to do so gives me major goosebumps ๐Ÿ’ช. And can you believe Jeremy Hansen is a person of color gonna venture beyond low Earth orbit for the first time? It's about time we saw some diversity in space exploration ๐ŸŒŽ.

But what I'm most stoked about is that this mission is just the beginning ๐Ÿš€. We're talking about sustainable human and robotic exploration of the moon, which means more opportunities for science, discovery, and... who knows, maybe even a new home for humanity one day? The SLS rocket is insane โ€“ 700k gallons of propellant? That's like a superpower in itself ๐Ÿ’ฅ.

And can we talk about the US vs China space race for a second? I'm not here to take sides or anything ๐Ÿ˜‚. But seriously, it's awesome that NASA is pushing forward with confidence and determination. They're gonna win this thing, mark my words ๐Ÿ†!

Wow ๐Ÿ’ฅ๐Ÿš€ the whole thing just sounds so epic! I mean, can you even imagine being one of those astronauts on this historic mission? The fact that Christina Koch will be the first woman to do it and Jeremy Hansen will be the first person of color is just amazing ๐Ÿคฉ. And let's not forget the SLS rocket - 700,000 gallons of propellant? That's insane! ๐Ÿ’ฅ It's like they're really pushing the limits of what we thought was possible ๐Ÿš€.

And I love how it's seen as a "second space race" against China, but at the end of the day, it's all about exploration and discovery for everyone involved ๐ŸŒŸ. The whole thing just feels so exciting and full of possibilities! ๐Ÿ˜ƒ

๐Ÿš€๐Ÿ”ฅ can't believe we're finally getting close to having humans back on the moon! Artemis II is like a dream come true for space enthusiasts like me. I mean, who wouldn't want to see astronauts traveling around the moon and practicing docking maneuvers? It's like the ultimate test of human capabilities.

The fact that Christina Koch will be the first woman to do so is just amazing ๐Ÿ™Œ, and Jeremy Hansen being part of the crew too is awesome. They're truly paving the way for future missions.

And I'm loving how NASA is taking a step-by-step approach towards Mars, with this mission serving as a test flight for the Orion spacecraft. It's like they're saying, "Hey, we've got this, let's move on to the next challenge!"

I'm also curious about the European service module's role in all of this ๐Ÿค”. How does it fit into the bigger picture?

Lastly, I hope the crew is doing okay under pressure ๐Ÿ˜ฌ. They must be feeling a mix of excitement and nerves as they prepare for this historic mission.

Bring on February 6th!

Man, I'm getting chills thinking about this! ๐Ÿš€ Back in my day, we used to watch those old Apollo missions on TV and think it was all sci-fi. Now, we're actually getting ready for a new era of space exploration with this Artemis II mission. It's crazy to think that our astronauts will be the first ones back around the moon since 1972! ๐ŸŒ• And can you believe Christina Koch is gonna be the first woman to do it? That's, like, totally awesome, right? ๐Ÿ˜Š I'm so hyped for this mission and what it could mean for humanity. We're really taking steps towards becoming a multi-planetary species, which is just mind-blowing! ๐Ÿ’ซ The SLS rocket is insane too - 700,000 gallons of propellant? That's like, whoa! ๐Ÿคฏ I'm rooting for NASA all the way and can't wait to see what they'll accomplish next. This is definitely the right direction for space exploration.

I donโ€™t usually comment but I think itโ€™s crazy how much hype this whole space thing has built up ๐Ÿš€๐Ÿ‘ฝ. People seem so obsessed with beating China to the moon, like winning a space race or something ๐Ÿ†. Newsflash: there are stars to explore and planets to discover! This mission is huge though, we need more humans on other planets for science and all that ๐Ÿคฏ. Canโ€™t wait to see what kind of new tech comes outta this project ๐Ÿ’ป.

The Artemis II mission is looking super ambitious ๐Ÿš€! I think it's awesome that NASA is pushing for a historic return to the moon, especially considering all the progress they've made in recent years. With this mission, we're getting closer to establishing a sustainable human presence on the lunar surface, which would be a major milestone for space exploration.

I'm also loving how diverse the crew looks โ€“ having astronauts from different backgrounds and identities is going to bring so much value to this mission ๐ŸŒŽ. And while it's true that some folks might see this as a "space race" against China or others, I think we should just be stoked that humanity is making progress in space exploration again.

The fact that NASA has 14 alternative launch dates lined up shows how committed they are to success, and with the powerful SLS rocket at their disposal, there's no reason why this mission can't go off without a hitch ๐Ÿ’ช. It'll be fascinating to see how the Orion spacecraft performs and if we get any surprises during the mission ๐Ÿค”. Overall, I'm rooting for NASA and the Artemis II crew โ€“ let's make this happen!

Ugh I'm so over this whole thing ๐Ÿ™„ I mean seriously who needs to go back to the moon? It's not like we've learned anything from the last time humans were there, just a bunch of old boots and broken equipment ๐Ÿ˜’ The cost alone is crazy 700k gallons of fuel for what, a few hours in space? ๐Ÿค‘ And what's with all this hype about the SLS rocket? It's just a big metal stick on wheels ๐Ÿšฎ Can't we focus on something more practical like colonizing Mars or solving our own problems on Earth? ๐Ÿคฏ
