N.J. extends blood shortage emergency and American Red Cross offers gift cards to donors

New Jersey's Blood Shortage Hits Rock Bottom as Winter Storm Fern Leaves Thousands of Donations Uncollected

Severe winter weather has dealt a devastating blow to the blood supply in New Jersey, with approximately 200 blood drives cancelled over the weekend due to harsh conditions. The American Red Cross is now offering $20 gift cards to donors who give blood or platelets from now until Wednesday in an effort to replenish dwindling supplies.

The crisis was already dire before Winter Storm Fern struck, with a 40% decline in donations since the winter holidays and lingering impacts of a strong flu season. Hospitals serving roughly 200 patients were left with less than a two-day supply of blood resources, prompting New Jersey to declare a blood emergency on January 6.

The shortage has severe consequences for patients awaiting surgery or cancer treatment. "Patients don't get a snow day," said Jeannie Mascolini, vice president of blood operations at New York Blood Center and New Jersey Blood Services. "Surgeries, cancer treatments, traumas and emergencies continue, and we need donors to help us recover."

To address the shortage, donors who schedule their appointments online between Monday and Wednesday will be eligible for a $20 gift card to a merchant of their choice. Eligibility requirements apply, with individuals aged 16 and weighing at least 110 pounds able to donate blood every 56 days.

The American Red Cross is urging people to step forward and donate, emphasizing the importance of replenishing the dwindling blood supply. As Mascolini noted, "This storm could not have come at a worse time... We were just starting to rebuild the blood supply when nearly 2,000 lifesaving donations were lost in a matter of days."

I'm literally so worried about these people struggling with cancer and surgery πŸ€•πŸ’‰. I mean, we know NJ is prone to crazy weather, but it's ridiculous that it's affecting the blood supply so much πŸ˜‚. And honestly, $20 gift card for donating? That's a pretty good motivator, but still, let's be real, shouldn't there be more incentives or something? πŸ€‘ I'm just glad they're pushing people to donate, though...it's not like we're all sitting around twiddling our thumbs waiting for someone else to step up πŸ™„. And omg, the fact that hospitals are running low on blood resources is just crazy 😲. We gotta do better than this!

Man, this is so crazy! I mean, I remember back in 2019 they had that bad flu season and it was like people were super hesitant to donate blood. Now we're facing a shortage again 🀯. It's just wild how quickly things can change. I wonder if they'll be able to get everything back on track after this storm passes... and what about those patients who are counting on surgeries? It's just not right that they have to wait because of something like weather πŸŒͺ️.

And $20 gift cards for donors? That's a sweet perk, though! I'd totally donate blood for that alone πŸ˜‚. But seriously, it's good to see the American Red Cross stepping up and offering incentives. Maybe if more people know about it, they'll be more willing to step forward and help out 🀝.

I'm just glad hospitals are able to declare a state of emergency and get some extra support... it's not ideal, but I guess that's what happens when things go south ❄️. Fingers crossed the blood supply gets replenished soon! πŸ’‰

omg this is so worrisome πŸ€• i dont know how hospitals are gonna manage with this low blood supply 🀯 especially with winter storm fern being super harsh and all... like, cant we just stay indoors for one day instead of risking our lives to donate blood? πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ anyway, $20 gift cards for donors sounds like a good idea πŸ’Έ maybe people will be more willing to give blood now 😊 gotta make sure those hospitals get that blood in there ASAP β°πŸ’‰

omg this is crazy 🀯 200 blood drives cancelled and hospitals are struggling with less than a two-day supply of blood? that's like, so not cool 😬 especially for all the patients waiting for surgeries or cancer treatments. i feel for them πŸ€• anyone who can donate pls step forward, those $20 gift cards might just motivate ppl to give πŸ’Έ

omg this is so crazy what's going on in nj rn 🀯 they need like thousands more ppl to donate ASAP or else surgeries & cancer treatment will get cancelled... $20 gift card sounds like a good incentive tho πŸ€‘ hope people step up & help the blood supply out πŸš‘πŸ’‰

I don't usually comment but I'm kinda worried about this whole blood shortage thing in NJ πŸ€•. I mean, it's not like the people there are trying to sabotage anything, it's just that winter storm Fern was really harsh and it messed up all their plans for blood donations. And now they're offering $20 gift cards to donors? That's actually a pretty cool idea, imo 😊. But seriously, I can imagine how scary it must be for patients waiting for surgeries or cancer treatments knowing that there's not enough blood available. It's just so... basic human need, you know? And the American Red Cross is trying to do their part by giving out gift cards and whatnot 🎁. Fingers crossed that things get back on track soon πŸ‘

Ugh, this is so sad! πŸ€• I was looking forward to getting my hands on that new smartwatch and now I'm not sure if it's worth it. On a more serious note, the situation in New Jersey is really dire and I feel for all those patients who are waiting for transplants or treatment. It's crazy how one winter storm can cause such chaos 🌨️. The American Red Cross is doing a great job trying to get donations back on track with that $20 gift card thingy πŸ‘... but we need more people to step forward and donate ASAP! πŸ’‰

Ugh, this is so sad πŸ€•... I mean, I know we've had our fair share of winter storms before, but it's like the whole state of New Jersey is being hit hard. Reminds me of that big blizzard back in '98 when everyone was stuck at home and couldn't even leave their houses for days. It was so bad that my grandma had to cancel her blood donation appointment... can you imagine? Anyway, it's just crazy how severe the shortage is now. I feel like we're going to be running out of plasma donations before the week is over 🀯. But hey, at least the American Red Cross is offering those $20 gift cards, right? That's a nice incentive to get people to donate... I hope it makes a difference πŸ™.

awww man, this is so sad! πŸ˜” thousands of donations left uncollected due to that harsh winter weather? it's like, we need blood donations ASAP but the bad weather is stopping people from donating πŸŒ¨οΈπŸ’‰ 20 bucks gift card seems like a great incentive though, hope ppl take advantage of it & help replenish the blood supply! πŸ’ͺ

Ugh, I don't get why people aren't donating more blood anyway πŸ€¦β€β™€οΈ. It's like they think it's not their problem or something. The $20 gift card thing is just gonna encourage people to donate because they can use the cash, not necessarily because they care about helping out πŸ€‘. And what's with the 56-day limit for donors? That's still pretty short if you ask me... I'd rather see a longer interval between donations and more incentives for regular donors πŸ’Έ. We need to think about the long-term solution here, not just a quick fix because of a winter storm ❄️. Can't we come up with something better than a gift card? πŸ€”

I'm so worried about this blood shortage thingy πŸ€•. It's like, what's going on with people these days? Back in my day, we'd show up for whatever community event or drive was happening, no questions asked πŸ™. Now it seems like some of us have become too lazy to spare a pint of blood πŸ’‰. I mean, 200 blood drives cancelled? That's not just a shortage, that's an emergency! ❄️ And now they're offering gift cards to donors? That's just trying to sweet-talk people into giving, in my opinion πŸ˜’. Can't we all just come together and help out each other for once? 🀝

Ugh πŸ€• this is so harsh! I'm all for helping out but $20 isn't much considering how bad the shortage is. I mean we're talkin' surgeries and cancer treatments here... those people need actual help, not just a gift card πŸ˜’. Can't they offer some free food or something to make it more worth our while? Plus, what's with the 56 day interval for donations? That's like asking someone to wait forever! πŸ’‰πŸ‘Ž

I'm literally shocked that people aren't flocking to donate blood like, what's the worst that could happen? I mean, it's not like they're going to get frostbite or anything from being outside for an hour. 🀣 But seriously, 200 blood drives cancelled due to bad weather? That's crazy! On the other hand, I don't know if $20 gift cards are enough motivation for people to step up and donate... I mean, who doesn't love a good gift card, right? πŸ˜‚ But then again, what if the thought of saving lives is more motivating than a free coffee from Starbucks? πŸ€”

πŸ€• this is super concerning, 200 blood drives cancelled? that's crazy. i feel for all those patients waiting for surgery or treatment, it's not like they can just cancel their appointments because of the weather 🌨️. and now they're offering $20 gift cards to donors... that's actually pretty cool 😊. but what about people who can't donate blood every 56 days? shouldn't there be more flexibility? anyway, let's hope this snow storm passes soon and our local hospitals have enough blood supplies πŸ™πŸ’‰

this is crazy... like what even is a snow day for patients waiting for surgery lol. they're literally counting on people to donate to save their lives and yet it feels like no one's showing up 🀯 the american red cross is offering gift cards but i'm not sure that's enough motivation for ppl who are already feeling guilty about missing a blood drive πŸ€‘ and what really gets me is that this was already a big problem b4 winter storm fern came along... like, can't we plan ahead for these kinds of situations? shouldn't our hospitals have more supplies on hand? πŸ€”

Ugh this is so frustrating 🀯! I mean, I get that winter storms can be super inconvenient, but it's like, basic human decency to make sure we're taking care of our hospitals and patients during these times. I feel bad for the people who are waiting for surgeries or cancer treatments – they shouldn't have to deal with this kind of uncertainty. And on top of that, now we've got a bunch of people stuck inside with time to kill, so why not donate some blood while you're at it? It's just 56 days if you can handle the weight and whatnot πŸ˜…. I hope this $20 gift card incentive helps get more people to step up and help out – we really do need it right now πŸ’‰

I'm super worried about this blood shortage in NJ πŸ€•... I mean, I get it, Winter Storm Fern was intense, but 200 blood drives cancelled? That's crazy! 😲 I totally agree that hospitals need more donors ASAP. But, like, $20 gift cards for donating blood and platelets? It feels a bit like bribery to me... Still, I guess it's better than nothing πŸ€‘. The problem is, the shortage was already pretty dire before this storm hit, so it's not just a matter of people being lazy or forgetful. There needs to be more investment in our healthcare system, especially when it comes to blood donation infrastructure πŸ’Έ. Let's hope people step up and donate what they can 🀞

omg u guys blood shortage is SO bad! like literally thousands of ppl's lives are at risk bc of this winter storm fern πŸ’”πŸŒ¨οΈ i'm seriously considering flying outta NJ to donate ASAP but like $20 gift card for donating blood isnt enough lol πŸ€‘πŸ‘€ why didnt they think of this sooner?? hospitals r still running low on supplies and patients r getting put on hold 4 surgeries & cancer treatment bc of it πŸ˜©πŸ€• i'm literally scared for my family members who need these meds πŸ§ πŸ’‰ anyone who can donate pls come thru!!

OMG, I'm literally worried sick about these patients waiting for surgery or cancer treatment πŸ€•πŸ˜¬. Can you believe they got hit with Winter Storm Fern and now thousands of donations are left uncollected? Like, what even is that?! 😑

I think it's so cool that the American Red Cross is offering gift cards to donors who give blood or platelets tho πŸ’ΈπŸ‘. I mean, a $20 gift card can be super tempting πŸ€‘ and might just get more people to donate. But seriously, we need to do better than this πŸ€¦β€β™€οΈ.

I'm not even joking when I say that patients shouldn't have to take a snow day πŸ˜‚. They're counting on us for their lives, you know? So let's step up and help the blood centers out, please! πŸ™
