MLB rumors: Should Phillies add any of top remaining starting pitchers?

The Phillies' starting pitcher situation is a pressing concern, with questions surrounding the long-term health of some key players and the team's ability to bolster its rotation. While Zack Wheeler, Aaron Nola, and Andrew Painter are all expected to take up spots in the rotation, there are lingering doubts about their readiness for Opening Day.

As the clock ticks down on free agency, Phillies fans can't help but wonder if they'll add any of the top remaining starting pitchers to bolster their chances. With 18 talented arms still on the market, Jon Heyman's list is a treasure trove of possibilities.

Framber Valdez, Zack Gallen, and Lucas Giolito are all high-profile targets who would require significant investment from the Phillies. However, with Gallen receiving a qualifying offer and potentially wanting a longer deal, he may be too pricey for Philly's liking. Meanwhile, Giolito's $19.3 million salary last season hints at the fact that he'll want a raise in his next contract.

Chris Bassitt, on the other hand, could be an attractive option if signed to a reasonable one-year deal. At 37 years old, he may not be the top-tier pitcher he once was, but he's still capable of putting up solid numbers. Nick Martinez is another possibility who could fit into Philly's plans at a slightly more affordable price tag.

The likes of Justin Verlander and Max Scherzer are too pricey for the Phillies to consider, with both future Hall of Famers expected to pitch in mid-season. Meanwhile, Aaron Civale might not be an upgrade over Chris Sánchez and Jesús Luzardo, who are already established members of the rotation.

Griffin Canning, however, is a more intriguing option. With a spotrac value of around $4 million, he represents a solid insurance policy that wouldn't break the bank for the Phillies. Canning's 3.74 ERA over 14 starts last season shows he has potential as a mid-rotation starter.

Ultimately, adding one of these pitchers would provide an added layer of depth and security to the Phillies' rotation. With a focus on finding a cheap but reliable option, the team may opt for someone like Canning or Zack Littell in the $4-8 million range. By addressing their starting pitcher needs, the Phillies can maintain their competitive advantage in the National League East and set themselves up for success in 2026.

The Phillies' rotation situation is a bit of a mess 🤔. I mean, you've got your guys like Wheeler, Nola, and Painter who are expected to be solid, but there's just so much uncertainty around it all. And don't even get me started on the money 💸 - Gallen and Giolito are basically out of reach, and Verlander and Scherzer? Forget about it 🙅‍♂️. But you know who I think could be a good fit? Chris Bassitt 🤝. He's not the ace he used to be, but he's still got some decent stuff left in the tank. And at 37, he might not break the bank either 💸. Then there's Griffin Canning - now that's an interesting option 🤔. Not a top-tier guy or anything, but he's cheap and could provide some much-needed depth to the rotation. I'd go with one of those guys, or maybe even someone like Zack Littell in the $4-8 million range 👍. That way, they can address their concerns without overpaying 💸.

🤩 OMG you guys I'm low-key freaking out about the Phillies' rotation situation 🚨! They gotta do something ASAP or they'll be stuck with that questionable young crew 🤦‍♂️. Now, I know some ppl might say "just wait for Painter to come up" but trust me, no way José ⏰ those guys are gonna get shredded by opposing teams.

I think the Phillies should go all out and snag one of those top dogs like Gallen or Valdez 💸! But let's be real, that's a lot of cash 💸. Maybe they could go for Chris Bassitt on a 1-yr deal? 🤝 That would give 'em some stability without breaking the bank 💸.

And I'm all about Canning 🎉! He's like that reliable insurance policy that you don't wanna mess with 😜! Plus, his price tag is hella reasonable 💸. If they can get him for $4-8 million, that'd be a total win-win 👍.

I'm not saying the Phillies will make some crazy move, but I do think they need to address this ASAP ⏰. The NL East is looking fierce 🐯 and we don't wanna see Philly getting left in the dust 😳. Who's with me on this? 🤗

I think the Phillies are gonna be okay with their rotation this year 🤔. They've got some good young arms coming back from injury and if they can snag one of those mid-tier guys like Griffin Canning or Zack Littell, that'd be a win-win 💸. I mean, sure, they could use some depth and it's always exciting to see what free agency brings 🤞... but at the end of the day, I think they've got a solid core and with some shrewd moves, they can make some noise in the NL East 🔥

idk about this whole pitching situation with the phillies... seems like they're stuck between paying too much for big-name guys or settling for some mid-tier arms 🤔. i mean, canning's a decent find, but can they really afford to shell out that kinda cash? and what's up with gallen wanting a longer deal? seems like the phillies are caught in this classic "too cheap" or "too expensive" dilemma 💸. i'd love to see some numbers on these potential signings, though... can't just take jon heyman's word for it 📊

🤔 The Phillies' situation is a bit of a mess, but I think they should go for Griffin Canning 🎯! He's got a low spotrac value which makes him an attractive option without breaking the bank 💸. Plus, he showed some promise last season with a 3.74 ERA 📊. It's not about finding a superstar, it's about adding depth and stability to their rotation 🔒. Canning could be that guy! Let's hope they can snag him on a reasonable deal ⚾

OMG u gotta try that new pretzel place downtown 🥨👌 I went there last wknd with my squad & OMG the soft pretzels r like nothin i ever had before so flaky n salty, we had to get a bunch of them & bring 'em back 2 our hotel room lol anyway, back 2 the Phillies, idk wut's gonna happen w/ their rotation but i think they need 2 sign someone 2 address those concerns. Canning sounds like a solid option tho, dont know much bout him but he seems like a decent risk 4 the price 🤑

I gotta say, I'm low-key worried about the Phillies' rotation 🤔💦. With some of their key players having long-term health concerns, it's like they're playing a game of injury roulette 💥🏥. But on the other hand, if they can snag someone like Griffin Canning or Zack Littell, that'd be a total win-win 🎉💪. Those guys are like affordable insurance policies 😊. And I think Chris Bassitt could be a solid option too - he's not gonna break the bank, but he'll still give them some quality starts ⏰.

📊💡 so I was looking at the MLB stats from last season and I found out that the Phillies' starting pitchers had a combined ERA of 4.42 which is kinda low 🤔, but they also had a team WAR of only 32.5 which is pretty average 💯. meanwhile, if we look at the top remaining starters on the market, guys like Gallen and Giolito have SPRA (salary projection revenue adjustment) values of around $35 million and $27 million respectively 📈, but Canning's spotrac value is a mere $4 million 🤑. it's clear that Philly needs to find some affordable options to bolster their rotation...

idk why phillies are being so secretive about their rotation plans 🤔 it feels like they're leaving fans hanging. i mean, wheeler, nola, and painter are all good starters but we need some insurance in case something goes wrong. someone like gallen would be a huge boost to the team, but at that price tag, it's hard to see them signing him 🤑. maybe they should consider some of the younger guys like canning or littell? they might not have the same level of experience, but they could provide some much-needed depth to the rotation 💪. it's also worth noting that verlander and scherzer are basically untouchable at this point, so phillies fans shouldn't be holding their breath for those guys 😂

I'm telling ya, the Phillies need to move fast on this one 🕰️. They've got some great young arms like Wheeler and Painter, but you gotta have depth, right? I mean, what if they get hurt or something? 🤦‍♂️. If they sign someone like Canning, that's a solid 2 cents 👍. He's not gonna blow anyone away, but he'll give them some insurance in case something happens to the other guys.

And I'm with you on Gallen and Giolito being out of reach 🤑. They're just too pricey for Philly's wallet. But if they can get someone like Canning or Littell at a decent price, that's a win-win 💯. The team's rotation needs to be solid to compete in the NL East, so let's hope they make some smart moves 🔮.

The thing is, with Verlander and Scherzer out of reach, you gotta look at guys like Bassitt or Martinez 🤔. They're not gonna be the ace, but they can give them a good start 💪. And hey, if it works out, that's all that matters 😎.

Man, I'm gettin' some doubts about the Phillies' rotation 🤔💥 They got some big names comin' outta free agency, but I don't know if they're gonna break the bank 💸. Zack Wheeler and Aaron Nola are lookin' solid, but Andrew Painter is a wild card 🎩. I'm keepin' an eye on Chris Bassitt 👀, he's got some miles on him, but he could still bring some heat 🔥. And then there's Griffin Canning 🌱, he's like the underdog who could pull off a surprise win 🏆.

man I'm still thinking about that crazy trade last season between the Yankees and Mets 🤯 I mean what's up with all these guys wanting like 200 million dollars a year or more? cant they just chill and play ball for the love of the game lol 😂 anyway back to this pitching situation, i think philly should go for Canning he seems like the real deal but not too pricey at $4 mil he could be the insurance policy they need

I think the Phillies are really gonna need to move on some guys if they wanna make a deep run in the playoffs this year 🤔... I mean, they gotta get some of those top-end starters in their rotation or it's gonna be tough to compete with the Braves and Mets. They're so stacked right now 💪

I'm not sure about Zack Gallen though, he just seemed kinda meh last season and all that qualifying offer business is a bit of a red flag for me 🤷‍♂️... but Chris Bassitt could be a sneaky good addition on a one-year deal. And I love Griffin Canning's potential as a mid-rotation starter, $4 million isn't too much to ask for some insurance 💸

What do you guys think the Phillies should prioritize? Should they go all out for some top-end talent or try to find some bargains in free agency? 🤔

🤔 the phillies are really struggling to solidify their rotation... 18 pitchers on the market is crazy 🚀 i think they should go after someone like griffin canning or zack littell, they gotta find a reliable mid-rotation starter that won't break the bank 💸 19.3 million a year for lucas giolito is way too much 💸 and framing valdez just seems too pricey 🤷‍♂️

omg i'm so hyped about this article!!! 😆 the phillies need to strengthen their rotation ASAP! zack gallen is definitely out of reach tho 🤦‍♂️ but framer valdez would be AMAZING 💥 and lucas giolito could be a great mid-season pickup too! 😉 but honestly i think griffin canning or zach littell would be PERFECT for philly's budget 🤑 what do u guys think? should they go all out or stick with the insurance policy? 🤔

I think the Phillies need to be smart about who they bring in to bolster their rotation 🤔. With guys like Wheeler, Nola, and Painter already taking spots, adding a high-profile pitcher might not be worth the investment 💸. Maybe Chris Bassitt or Nick Martinez would be a good fit at a reasonable price? They're not gonna change the world, but they can help put up some solid numbers 🌟. And let's be real, with guys like Verlander and Scherzer already locked in for mid-season starts, we might not see too much of them anyway 😐. Canning or Littell would be great additions to add some depth without breaking the bank 💸💪.

I feel like the Phillies are at a bit of a crossroads right now 🤔. On one hand, they've got some talented young arms coming up through the system, but on the other hand, you can never have too much depth and security in the rotation 😬. I think it's great that Jon Heyman is out there listing all these top pitchers – it really gives me hope for the season ahead! 💡 But at the same time, the Phillies need to find a balance between investing in their young guys and bolstering their rotation with some proven veterans. Maybe someone like Griffin Canning or Zack Littell would be a great fit? 🤞 They might not be the A-listers that Verlander or Scherzer are, but they've got potential and could bring some much-needed stability to the team. Fingers crossed! 🤞

🤔 The Phillies need to get their rotation game on track ASAP 🕒️ or else they'll be struggling 😩. I mean, Zack Wheeler, Aaron Nola, and Andrew Painter are all legit but what about the injury concerns? 🤕 They can't afford to lose any of them mid-season ⏰. Free agency is a whole mess right now 🤑, with some big-name starters like Verlander and Scherzer out of reach 💸. But maybe they can snag someone like Canning or Littell on a budget $4-8 mil? 🤑 That'd be a solid move for the Phillies to stay competitive in the NL East ⚾️. Maybe we'll see some surprise signings that help them bolster their rotation 💥!

Ugh, I'm so done with the Phillies' front office 🤯. They're leaving me hanging on these rumors all winter... no concrete moves, just a bunch of "possibilities" and "targets". And what's up with the qualifying offer thingy? Can't we just make an offer like everyone else?! 💸 It's gonna be another boring season if they don't make some real moves. And I'm really hoping it's not Zack Gallen, he's just too pricey for my taste 😒
