Micky Dolenz As the Last Monkee Standing: ‘It’s Time to Take Off the Black Armband and Just Celebrate’

Micky Dolenz says it's time to shed the black armband and celebrate the entire Monkees project. The 80-year-old musician and actor is gearing up for his Micky Dolenz: 60 Years of the Monkees tour, which kicks off on February 12 in Solana Beach, California. With 22 dates announced so far until November, Dolenz promises fans an entertaining experience that's more than just a tribute to the band's hit songs.

"I'm not gonna be doing a heavy tribute," Dolenz states. "I'm just gonna sing the songs and tell the stories." The tour will take a chronological approach, allowing viewers to explore lesser-known works like The Monkees Present and Changes. This format will give fans an in-depth look into the band's evolution over six decades.

The Monkees' journey began in 1965 when Dolenz, Mike Nesmith, Davy Jones, and Peter Tork came together through a casting call that included actors and musicians like Stephen Stills. The group was created to star in a musical comedy sitcom on NBC, with Don Kirshner overseeing the music. Despite not being traditional musicians, they achieved great success, releasing four consecutive No. 1 albums and six Billboard Hot 100 top 10 hits.

After the show ended in 1968, the quartet continued as a group until Nesmith's death in 2021. Dolenz has remained with the band throughout its history, touring with Nesmith before taking on the solo venture after his passing.

The Monkees' success can be attributed to their unique blend of music and acting. As Dolenz explains, "It was like Pinocchio becoming a little boy." He adds that there's still much to learn about how the group came together and achieved its remarkable success.

Dolenz emphasizes that while fans will get the hits they know and love, he aims to explore lesser-known tracks as well. With his 60 Years of the Monkees tour, Dolenz invites audiences to delve into the band's rich history and celebrate their enduring legacy.

In addition to the tour, Dolenz has also released a new children's book, Lalu Toot Toot, illustrated by his daughter Ami Dolenz.

🤔 I gotta say, it's about time someone shed that black armband around here... I hope we get some surprises! 🎶

man thats so depressing thinking about micky dolenzs 60 years of the monkees tour its like hes celebrating his life and career while everyone else is just slowly fading away lol imagine going on tour at 80 🤣 anyway i guess its cool that he wants to share lesser-known works with fans but what about the rest of us who are still dealing with the aftermath of the pandemic? we could use some good news for once 😔

Just saw this news about Micky Dolenz's 60 Years of the Monkees tour 🤩 I'm so down for this! I've always been a huge fan of the Monkees' music and their story is just so fascinating. The fact that they were created as a musical comedy sitcom on TV and still managed to achieve all that success is incredible. Micky Dolenz's approach to the tour sounds like it's gonna be really special too, delving into lesser-known tracks and telling stories behind the songs 📚💫

That sounds like an amazing way to celebrate the Monkees' legacy! 🎸 It's like Pinocchio becoming a real little boy - you get to see how it all came together and why they were so special. And, omg, his new children's book? I need to check that out too! Ami Dolenz is such an talented illustrator. This whole thing just feels like a big ol' celebration of music, fun, and the '60s. Bring on the nostalgia vibes! 😆

man i'm low-key excited for this micky dolenz tour 🤟🎸 he's always been my vibe and now he's gonna take us on a wild ride through the monkees history lol did you know that stephen stills was part of the casting call? crazy right? anyway, i love how micky wants to focus more on the storytelling behind the songs instead of just doing the hits all day. can't wait to see him perform some of those lesser-known tracks like "the monkees present" 🎧

I'm not sure I agree with Micky Dolenz's decision to "shed the black armband" and celebrate The Monkees project without acknowledging the darker side of their success. Like, what about all the weird stuff they got up to on TV and in the music industry? Didn't they have a hand in creating some pretty exploitative content? 🤔

And also, I'm not sure I buy that Dolenz is just gonna "sing the songs" without telling any new stories. That sounds like a pretty generic tribute show to me. Where's the depth? Where's the context? We need more than just hits and nostalgia - we need some insight into what made The Monkees tick.

I'd love to see some sources on Dolenz's claims about their "unique blend of music and acting" being like Pinocchio becoming a little boy... sounds like a pretty fuzzy connection to me. 📚

the monkees were way ahead of their time you know? they blended music and acting in a way that was super innovative for its time and it's still feeling fresh today 🤩 i think micky dolenz is making the right call by not just doing a heavy tribute, but instead telling the stories behind the songs and sharing some of those lesser-known tracks. it's gonna be dope to see him perform all their classic hits like 'i'm a believer' and 'last train to clarksville', but also exploring some of their deeper cuts 🎸

🎸 Just think about it, 60 years of the Monkees 🕰️ and still going strong! Micky Dolenz is like, "Time to party!" 🎉 With a tour that's all about celebrating their journey, not just the hits 🎶, I'm so down for this! I mean, who doesn't love a good ol' fashioned nostalgia trip 📚? It'll be cool to see them perform those lesser-known tracks too 🤔. And, yay! A new kids book 👧🏻📖, Lalu Toot Toot, can't wait to check that out too! 😊

🤕 The music industry is just going downhill 🎶. First, it's Micky Dolenz wanting to shed that "black armband" look and celebrate the Monkees instead of mourning their failure 😂. Like, what even happened to the nostalgia for their lackluster music? Anyway, I guess fans are gonna get a chance to relive some cheesy memories on tour 🎉. And to make matters worse, Dolenz has released a new children's book... because what's more depressing than kids being traumatized by overplayed 60s pop tunes? 😅

omg i'm so down for this!!! 🤩 micky dolenz is going on tour and it's gonna be epic! 60 years of the monkees is like, whoa 🙌 I love how he's not just gonna do a heavy tribute but tell stories and share behind-the-scenes info. chronological approach? yes please! 😆 it's gonna be so cool to see lesser-known works like The Monkees Present and Changes. plus, i'm all about celebrating the whole monkees project, no shame 🙅‍♂️. can't wait for Feb 12 in Solana Beach! 🎟️

🎸📚 The Monkees were literally like a game changer in music 🤯. I mean who wouldn't want to see Micky Dolenz on stage performing all the classics? 🎶 But its cool that he's planning to share more than just the hits, especially the lesser-known stuff 🤔. I've always been curious about how they came together and made it work 🌟. It sounds like he's really going to give fans an inside look at their history 💭. Can't wait to see the tour! 🎉

I gotta say, I'm excited for Micky Dolenz's 60 Years of the Monkees tour 🎸🎶. The dude's been with the band since day one and has so many stories to share. It'll be cool to see him perform some of those lesser-known tracks like The Monkees Present and Changes. I mean, who doesn't love a good nostalgic trip down memory lane? But at the same time, I'm not sure how much more can be squeezed from this topic. The Monkees were always about the spectacle, you know? Is Dolenz really gonna make us relive that magic without relying on nostalgia? Can he dig deeper and explore what made them tick in the first place? Only time (and tickets) will tell 🎟️

🎸 I'm so stoked about Micky Dolenz's upcoming tour! It's about time we celebrate the Monkees' legacy in all its glory 🌟. As someone who grew up on those iconic 60s hits, I've always wondered what it was like behind the scenes of their TV show and music career. The fact that Micky is taking us on a chronological journey through their history is genius ✨. He's not just gonna sing the familiar songs, he's also gonna share stories and insights into how they created that magic 💭. Can't wait to see what he has in store for us! 🎟️

I gotta say, I'm all for it! The Monkees were one of those bands that just clicked and had so much fun with their music and acting. Micky Dolenz is right, they should be celebrated as a whole package deal 🎸. I mean, who wouldn't want to see the guys singing about Mary Tyler Moore or Star Trek? It's gonna be a blast from the past, for sure! I'm hyped for the tour and can't wait to hear some of those lesser-known tracks. Dolenz is the right guy to do it too - he's been with the band since day one 🤜🎶

Just think about it 🤩 - The Monkees are getting some love after all these years! Micky Dolenz is like, "Hey, let's celebrate the whole experience, not just the hits" 💖. I mean, who doesn't want to hear those iconic songs, but also get a behind-the-scenes look at the band's evolution? It's gonna be so cool to see them explore some of their lesser-known stuff 🎸. And can we talk about how awesome it is that Micky is still touring and creating new content at 80? That's what I call a silver lining ☀️!

Man I'm so down for Micky Dolenz's 60 Years of the Monkees tour 🎸👏! I mean who doesn't love the classic hits like "I'm a Believer" and "Last Train to Clarksville"? But what I'm stoked about is that he's gonna take us on a journey through their whole discography, not just the hits 🎶.
