Mass. fire department credits phone app for saving lost hikers

Hikers in Western Massachusetts Stumble Upon Life-Saving Smartphone App During Bizarre Rescue.

When two hikers found themselves stranded in the woods on Saturday night, they had no trouble pinpointing their location - thanks to a smartphone app. The what3words app, which uses unique three-word combinations to define every 3-meter-square space globally, proved crucial to rescuers as it provided precise coordinates for the pair's exact location.

According to authorities, standard GPS signals were unable to get a reading due to dense foliage and signal interference in the area. However, the hikers had downloaded the what3words app beforehand and utilized its unique system to share their exact location with the rescue teams. This led to a much faster response time for the authorities.

Search efforts were coordinated despite the challenging weather conditions, which included cold temperatures, rain, and darkness. As a result, officials made contact with the hikers at 8:51 p.m. and managed to extract them from the woods by 9:15 p.m. The rescue operation involved multiple teams from various departments, including fire services, police, and technical rescue units.

The Westfield Fire Department has stressed the importance of having a backup navigation system in case GPS fails. The what3words app works offline as long as it is pre-downloaded on a phone, providing users with an added layer of security for their outdoor adventures.

I was just thinking about how I'm trying to get my cousin's dog trained to walk on a leash without pulling πŸ˜‚. Like, have you ever tried to teach a puppy not to chase squirrels? It's hilarious! Anyway, back to this news... it makes me think that having that what3words app could be super helpful when I'm planning my own hiking trips in the future 🏞️. Maybe I'll even get one for my dog too! But, seriously, GPS signals can be so sketchy in the woods, and it's awesome that the hikers had a backup plan πŸ’».

I'm so glad to see this! πŸ™Œ what3words is literally lifesaving, right? I mean who needs GPS when you have a system that can pinpoint your location in every 3-meter-square space?! 🀯 It's crazy how the hikers used it to share their exact location with the rescue teams, and the app worked like a charm even in areas with bad signal. It just goes to show that technology can be your best friend when you're lost in the woods. And kudos to the Westfield Fire Department for emphasizing the importance of having a backup navigation system - safety first, always! πŸ’‘

OMG 🀯, I was just out hiking last weekend and my friend had that same app on her phone! We were lost in the woods too but luckily we had a signal and could use Google Maps to find our way back. It's crazy how much of a difference having something like what3words can make during an emergency 🌲🚨. I'm definitely going to start carrying it with me from now on, especially if I go solo πŸžοΈπŸ’‘.

omg u can't believe how lucky those hikers were πŸ˜‚ they literally found themselves stranded and had this crazy smart app to pinpoint their location πŸ“ thanks to what3words! i mean, it's wild that standard gps signals just couldn't cut through the foliage lol. anyway, gotta give props to the rescue teams who coordinated a sick operation in those harsh weather conditions β„οΈπŸŒ¨οΈ. so important for people to have backup navigation systems, esp when venturing out into the wilderness 🏞️

I just can't believe how much that what3words app saved those hikers lives! 🀯 I mean, think about it, no signal in the woods and then suddenly this magical 3-word combo thingy works like a charm... it's genius! πŸ€“ And it's not just the app itself, but also how those hikers prepared for their hike by downloading it beforehand. It's all about being prepared, right? 😊 I'm definitely gonna download that app and make sure my family does too... you never know when you might need it in an emergency! πŸ’»

I'm telling you, there's more to this story than meets the eye πŸ€”. What if they didn't just happen to download that what3words app by chance? Maybe it was part of some bigger plan to track people in the woods... I mean, who controls this kind of tech? The government? Corporations? It's not like we know how all that works behind the scenes πŸ’».

And let's talk about GPS signals failing. That's just a natural phenomenon, right? Or is it part of some larger scheme to disrupt communication systems? And what's up with the weird weather conditions? Coincidence or something more sinister? ☁️

I'm not saying I think they were in some kind of danger, but... have you noticed how often we hear about people "stranded" in these situations? It's like they're just testing our emergency response systems 🚨. My point is, it's always good to be prepared and know what's really going on behind the scenes πŸ’‘.

I mean, can you imagine being stuck in those woods and not knowing where you are? It's like, super scary 😬. But the fact that these hikers had that what3words app on their phones just saved them so much time... it's crazy! I'm glad they were prepared and knew to use it. And kudos to the rescue teams for getting there fast enough. The weather conditions must have been pretty brutal, but they still managed to get everyone out safely.

It's also a good reminder that sometimes you need more than just your phone's GPS to stay safe outdoors. Like, if your battery dies or your phone gets wet, it's not going to help you then... so having that backup navigation system is a lifesaver in situations like this.

can you believe how lucky those hikers were? they stumble upon this super handy app that literally saved their lives 🀯. i mean, standard GPS just couldn't cut it due to the dense foliage and whatnot, but that 3-word combo thingy totally did the trick πŸ”. and let's be real, who needs reliable GPS when you've got a sweet backup plan like what3words? πŸ™. gotta give those hikers points for being prepared, tho - i guess it's a good reminder to download that app before venturing out into the great unknown πŸŒ³πŸ“±.

OMG this story is so cool 🀩! I mean, can you even imagine being stuck in the woods and not knowing where to go? Thankfully, these two hikers were prepared and had that awesome what3words app on their phones 😊. It's like having a personal navigator or something! The fact that it worked offline too is just genius πŸ€“. I'm loving how all the different teams came together to rescue them, too - it's a great example of teamwork and coordination πŸ’ͺ. And y'know what the best part is? It might've saved their lives! So let's all give a shoutout to that app and a big thank you to those rescue teams πŸ™. This just goes to show that with the right tech and some serious prep, we can overcome even the toughest challenges 😎.

Can u believe this?! 🀯 I was literally thinking about venturing into those woods and now I'm glad I didn't think that through πŸ˜‚... seriously though, I mean, who downloads an app called what3words? πŸ€” What's the point of having a 3-word combo for every 3-meter square space? It sounds like something out of a sci-fi movie! πŸ“Ί The hikers had to have done some serious prep work beforehand. And can we just say that standard GPS is not reliable in those woods?! πŸŒ³πŸ‘Ž Good thing they had the app and were able to share their location with the rescuers. Safety first, right? 😊

I was out hiking with friends last summer and we got lost in the woods too 🏞️😬. It was so dark and cold, I thought for sure we were gonna have to spend the night. But one of our friends had downloaded that what3words app and it saved our lives! We used it to send our location to the rescue team and they found us way faster than if we just relied on GPS.

It's crazy how important having a backup navigation system is, especially when you're venturing into unknown territories. I've been meaning to get more people to use that app so we can all stay safe out there πŸ“±πŸ‘. The Westfield Fire Department is onto something with that reminder!
