Mary Earps interview: Former England goalkeeper says 'I've not written the book to tear anyone down'

Former England women's goalkeeper Mary Earps has made a stark distinction between the reality of her book and its reception by others. The 35-year-old, who penned "The Unplayed Match", says she did not write to "tear anyone down". In an interview with BBC Sport, Earps acknowledged that some things have been distorted in their depiction of her life.

When questioned about her intentions behind writing the book, which delves into her experiences as a professional footballer and includes candid insights into sexism within the England women's team, Earps clarified that she is not looking to provoke or hurt anyone. Instead, she aims to educate people about issues faced by female footballers and encourage others to come forward with their own stories.

This approach is in stark contrast to some media portrayals of her book, which have focused on sensationalized claims and negative comments from prominent figures within the football world. Earps expressed frustration at these distorted narratives, stating that they were "overwhelming" and unfair representations of her intentions.

By speaking candidly about her experiences and challenging the narratives surrounding her book, Mary Earps is taking a significant step towards promoting greater understanding and empathy for female footballers. Her commitment to using her platform to educate and raise awareness highlights the importance of amplifying underrepresented voices within sports media.

I feel like some people are making a huge deal outta this book by Mary Earps 🤔. Like, she didn't write it to bash anyone or be all bitter about her experiences in football... it's just telling her story, and if that makes others uncomfortable, well, maybe they should take a step back and listen 🗣️. It's not like she's trying to attack anyone, she's actually trying to break the stigma around women's football and get more people to speak up about the stuff they've been through 💪. I'm all for it! Let's just try to keep things in perspective and not jump to conclusions based on what we hear 🤷‍♀️.

I'm so done with all these armchair critics thinking they know what's going on in Mary Earps' mind just because they've got a 30-second clip of an interview 🙄... I mean, can't we just give the girl some credit for being brave enough to share her story and not sugarcoat it? Like, yeah, she might've written this book, but at least she's trying to educate people and start a conversation about the real issues in women's football - sexism, marginalization, and all that jazz 💁‍♀️... Not everyone's got the guts to go through what she has and still come out talking, you know? And yeah, some 'prominent figures' might've made some comments that were super negative, but who hasn't been there, right? Mary Earps isn't trying to tear anyone down; she's just trying to rip off the bandaid and get people talking about these issues. I'm so proud of her for speaking out like this 💕...
