Kenan Thompson and Kel Mitchell are teaming up for a new horror-comedy project that brings back some nostalgic laughs, while also unleashing some terror. The dynamic duo, best known for their Nickelodeon show "Kenan & Kel," has announced plans to star in and produce the upcoming film "Kenan & Kel Meet Frankenstein."
Inspired by classic comedy duo Abbott and Costello's monster movies, particularly "Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein" from 1948, Thompson and Mitchell will play two delivery drivers who find themselves face-to-face with Frankenstein's monster. What follows is an ordinary night turned into a fight for survival.
"We're excited to bring a fresh take on a classic monster story and have some fun doing it," said Thompson in a statement. "We're tapping into everything people love about our dynamic while trying something totally new." Mitchell added, "Coming back together always feels natural, and this lets us tap into that, while also trying something completely unexpected."
The script for the film is being written by Jonah Feingold, with filming set to begin this summer. As of now, a director has not been announced.
In a nod to the classic monster movies, the logline for "Kenan & Kel Meet Frankenstein" reads: "Two delivery drivers' routine drop-off takes a terrifying turn when they arrive at a creepy, out-of-place castle and accidentally awaken Frankenstein's monster – turning an ordinary night into a fight for survival."
The timing of this new project couldn't be more fitting, given the recent resurgence of Mary Shelley's classic tale in popular culture. Guillermo del Toro's "Frankenstein" (2020) and Maggie Gyllenhaal's upcoming "The Bride!" starring Christian Bale as Frankenstein's monster have already brought back Frankenstein's Monster to the big screen.
For Thompson and Mitchell, this project is a chance to revisit their comedic roots while exploring new territory in horror. With "Kenan & Kel Meet Frankenstein" set to become a part of the popular franchise, fans can expect plenty of laughs and thrills from this unlikely duo's latest adventure.
