Journalist Don Lemon released on personal recognizance, judge rules

Former CNN journalist Don Lemon was released from jail on personal recognizance after being arrested in Los Angeles earlier this week. He, along with three others, is charged with civil rights crimes related to an incident where anti-ICE protesters disrupted a church service in Minnesota.

According to the indictment, the four individuals attempted to block worshippers at the church and allegedly conspired to do so. However, lawyers for Lemon claim he was just reporting on the incident as an independent journalist and that his actions were protected by the First Amendment.

Lemon's lawyer, Abbe Lowell, said in a statement that "Don has been a journalist for 30 years, and his constitutionally protected work in Minneapolis was no different than what he has always done." The Department of Justice responded by arguing that journalists like Lemon are not entitled to use force or physically obstruct worshippers exercising their First Amendment rights.

In related news, the White House issued a statement supporting Lemon's arrest, with an image posted on social media featuring a chain and the caption "When life gives you lemons..." However, Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass called the arrest an "egregious assault on constitutionally protected First Amendment rights," saying that Lemon was simply doing his job.

The incident highlights tensions between law enforcement and journalists covering protests, particularly those related to immigration issues. While some may view the arrests as a necessary measure to maintain order, others see them as an attack on the press's right to report on public events without fear of retribution.

OMG, this is so crazy 😱! I'm all about free speech and the press being able to report on stuff without getting caught up in drama like this. Don Lemon has been doing his thing for 30 years, no need to put him behind bars over just doing his job πŸ€”. It's like, we're living in a time where reporting on protests can get you arrested, and that's just not right 🚫. I'm Team Lemon all the way πŸ’ͺ, and it's crazy that LA Mayor Karen Bass is speaking out against this - she's got a point πŸ‘Š. The First Amendment is there to protect us from people like this who are more interested in being authoritarian than letting journalists do their thing πŸ“°.

πŸ€” This whole thing just got weird. Like, I get that there were tensions between protesters and churchgoers, but arresting Don Lemon? 🚫 That's a journalist, dude! He's supposed to be reporting the news, not getting arrested for doing his job. πŸ’Ό The fact that the White House is supporting this arrest just makes me think they're trying to send a message about who's really in charge here - the press or law enforcement. πŸ“° But honestly, I don't think anyone wants to spark a fight between journalists and police. Can't we all just get along? 😊

omg i cant even believe what happened with don lemon 🀯 he was literally arrested for doing his job and it just feels so unfair 😩 i mean i get that people are upset about him trying to block worshippers at this church but come on who gets charged with a crime for doing their job? πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ and now the white house is even weighing in and being all supportive of the arrest lol what's next they gonna start arresting news anchors for reporting on controversial issues? πŸ“°πŸ˜²

Ugh I'm so done with this 🀯!!! Don Lemon getting arrested for doing his job is just not fair πŸ™„! He's been a journalist for 30 years and has always protected the rights of people like him and his crew to report on protests without fear of retribution. This whole thing about them trying to block worshippers at the church just doesn't add up πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ. I mean, if Lemon was just reporting on the incident as an independent journalist then he's got nothing to hide.

And don't even get me started on this "egregious assault on constitutionally protected First Amendment rights" stuff πŸ’”. It sounds like they're trying to intimidate journalists from covering protests in the first place 🀐. I mean, what's next? Are we gonna start seeing cops showing up at every protest with batons and pepper spray just waiting for someone to make a move? 😱

This whole thing is just so frustrating 🀯! It feels like law enforcement is just trying to silence the press and not hold themselves accountable when they mess up. We need more of these kinds of incidents so we can expose this kind of hypocrisy and get some real change πŸ’ͺ.

πŸ˜’ So I'm thinking, how can we balance keeping people safe during protests with the right to free speech and press freedom? πŸ€” It feels like law enforcement is getting more aggressive towards journalists, which isn't cool 😬. Don Lemon's got a solid defense - he was just reporting on what was happening, not trying to disrupt anything. Why can't we trust our journalists to do their job without worrying about getting arrested? πŸ“°

I mean, I get it, safety is important, but this feels like an overreach by the authorities 🀝. It's not like Lemon was violent or threatening anyone - he was just trying to gather information and share it with the public πŸ’‘. And what about all the other reporters and camera crews that are covering protests without incident? Why the special treatment for Don Lemon? πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ

It's also kinda weird how the White House is supporting Lemon's arrest, but then they're posting a meme that looks like they're making fun of him πŸ˜‚. Like, what's up with that? Can't we just respect our journalists and their right to report without getting all snarky about it? πŸ™„

πŸ€” this whole thing is kinda wild... don't get me wrong, i'm all for keeping protests organized and safe, but arresting someone just because they're reporting on it? that's a slippery slope, you know? 🚨 i think the fact that the white house was like "yeah, we support his arrest" and then los angeles mayor was all like "no, this is a huge deal for free speech"... it shows how polarized we are on this issue. πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ what's next? arresting people for taking selfies at a protest? πŸ˜‚

Wow 🀯 this is so interesting! I mean, Don Lemon has been doing his job for 30 years and now he's facing civil rights charges just because he was reporting on a protest? That's crazy! The White House even came out in support of the arrest, but LA Mayor Karen Bass is saying it's an attack on journalists' rights... how can they be so different on this? πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ

I'm not surprised about Don Lemon's situation πŸ€”... I mean, it's like he was just trying to do his job and tell people what's really going on 😊. The fact that he's out on personal recognizance is a big win for the press and free speech, in my opinion πŸŽ‰. I think it's great that there are people like Lemon who aren't afraid to speak truth to power and shine a light on important issues πŸ’‘.

And can we talk about how this whole thing highlights the importance of having a strong press corps? πŸ“° I mean, without journalists like Don Lemon, we wouldn't know what's really going on in our communities or in our country. They're the ones who hold people in power accountable and give us the information we need to make informed decisions πŸ€“.

I'm just glad that Karen Bass is speaking out against this arrest – she's right to say it was an egregious assault on First Amendment rights 😠. We need more people like her advocating for our rights and freedoms πŸ’ͺ.

I'm really worried about this, it feels like we're seeing a slippery slope here πŸ€•. As a journalist myself, I can understand Don Lemon's perspective - he was just doing his job and reporting on an incident. But at the same time, I get why law enforcement is trying to maintain order in these situations.

I think what's concerning me most is that this incident seems to be playing out like a classic case of 'them vs us' mentality 🚫. The White House seems to be taking Don Lemon's side, but then you've got Karen Bass saying the opposite - it feels like we're losing sight of the fact that journalists have a right to report on these events without fear of retribution.

It's not just about Don Lemon or this one incident - it's about the bigger picture. We need to make sure that law enforcement and journalists are able to coexist peacefully, without one side feeling threatened by the other 🌎.

man... this whole thing is like, really puzzling you know? πŸ€” on one hand, i get where law enforcement is trying to do their job and keep people safe, but at what cost? 🚫 they're basically saying that journalists can't just show up to a protest and document what's going down without getting arrested. that's like, basic reporting skills, right? πŸ˜‚

but then you look at the other side of it and it's like... what happens when people start getting hurt or arrested because they're trying to exercise their First Amendment rights? πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ is that really justifiable? i don't know, maybe i'm just not seeing the whole picture here. all i can say is that this whole situation feels super fishy to me and it's like... what are we even doing as a society if we can't trust our journalists to report on important events without fear of retribution? πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ
