'It's a farce': families of Venezuela political prisoners still await their release

Venezuela's Prisoner Release Farce: Families' Desperate Wait Continues

As Nicolás Maduro, the embattled Venezuelan president, finds himself behind bars in the United States, hundreds of families have returned to Venezuela, demanding the immediate release of their incarcerated loved ones. The Zone 7 police detention center in Caracas has been the focal point of their protests, with some women camping out for over two weeks.

Mileidy Mendoza, one of the protesters, expressed frustration and anger at the slow pace of releases. "We're not going anywhere without our relatives," she said, referring to her partner Eric Díaz, who was arrested last November on charges of "phone pairing." The government's explanation for his arrest has been met with skepticism by many, who see it as a pretext for targeting political opponents.

The family's situation is just one example of the desperation and uncertainty that has gripped Venezuela since Maduro's election in 2024. With over 600 political prisoners still languishing in Venezuelan jails, many have given up hope on seeing their loved ones released anytime soon.

One such prisoner is Juan Pablo Guanipa, a prominent opposition figure who was arrested last May on charges of terrorism, treason, and conspiring with a foreign government. His son Ramón described his father's emotional state during one of the few brief visits he has had, saying, "The first thing he said to me was that he wouldn't bow down to these people, not even behind bars."

Despite the promise of releases by Maduro's successor, Delcy Rodríguez, many have questioned the sincerity of her words. "Releasing [political] prisoners is always an amazing thing… But it means nothing… in terms of ending the repression," said Javier Corrales, a Latin America expert.

For families like Massiel Cordones', who has been waiting for over two years to see her son, José Ángel Barreno Cordones, released from prison, every day feels like an eternity. Her son was jailed on charges related to Operation Gideon, a failed attempt to overthrow Maduro's government. Despite the exhaustion and uncertainty, Massiel remains hopeful that her son will be freed soon.

As night falls, the protests continue, with protesters joining hands in prayer or singing Venezuela's national anthem, which features lines of resistance against oppression. The families' demand for freedom is met with a mix of hope and frustration, as they struggle to come to terms with the reality of their country's government.

The slow pace of releases has exposed the Maduro regime's attempts to placate international pressure without making meaningful changes. "These are not the actions of a regime that's in the process of democratising... They're the actions of a regime that's in the process of trying to pragmatically consolidate power under a new context," said Orlando Pérez, a Latin America expert.

As the standoff continues, one thing is clear: Venezuela's prisoners are not going anywhere anytime soon.

I feel like we're witnessing another episode of "The Hunger Games" in Venezuela 🤯💥 - innocent people getting caught up in the government's web of deceit and suffering for it 😩. It's heartbreaking to see families waiting for years, even decades, to be reunited with their loved ones, all while the regime tries to maintain its grip on power 💔.

Meanwhile, Maduro is enjoying his luxurious vacation in the US 🛫️ - talk about priorities! And Delcy Rodríguez's promise of releasing political prisoners sounds like a clever PR stunt 📢. I mean, who wouldn't want to be seen as a champion of freedom and democracy? 🙄

But let's get real here – the people aren't buying it 💁‍♀️. They're seeing right through the regime's empty promises and are demanding action 💪. It's time for Venezuela to take a step forward towards true democracy, not just some tokenistic gesture to placate international pressure 🙅‍♂️.

Those families waiting for their loved ones' release need justice now ⏰ – it's been too long! No more empty promises, no more excuses 🚫. It's time for real change, and it starts with releasing the prisoners who were imprisoned for speaking out against an unjust regime 💥.

🤕 I mean, come on! 600+ people stuck in Venezuelan jails? That's just heartbreaking. It's like they're trapped in some kind of never-ending nightmare. And to think that these people have been arrested on trumped-up charges or just for being part of the opposition... it's just not right.

I'm all for holding leaders accountable, but Maduro's regime has taken it way too far. The fact that Delcy Rodríguez is promising releases without actually making any progress is just laughable. I mean, where's the sincerity? It's like she's just trying to appease the international community without actually doing anything about the problem.

And what really gets me is how these families have been waiting for so long for their loved ones to be released. Massiel Cordones' son has been in jail for over two years... that's just cruel. I'm all for justice, but not when it comes at the cost of people's freedom and dignity.

You know what they say: "the proof is in the pudding." Until Maduro's regime actually starts making some real changes, these prisoners are going to be stuck in their cells forever. It's a total farce, if you ask me. 🤔

This is literally heartbreaking 🤕. The Venezuelan people have been suffering for so long and it feels like no one is listening or doing anything about it. I mean, how can you expect to gain trust when the government just uses your loved ones as pawns to silence opposition? It's disgusting 😡. And these families waiting for years, still holding on to hope? That's what breaks my heart 💔. We need real change now, not just empty promises from politicians who only care about themselves 🙄.

😩 I'm literally dying over here thinking about all these families who are going through this 😭. 600+ political prisoners in Venezuela is just insane 🤯. Maduro needs to do something real already, like release these people and give them a chance at life 🕰️. Families like Massiel's have been waiting for TWO YEARS 📆, can you even imagine how frustrating that must be? 🙄 And the fact that Delcy Rodríguez is promising releases but not following through on it just makes me wanna scream 💥. It's like, come on guys, get your act together! 🤦‍♀️

I'm worried about these Venezuelan families 🤕. It's been over two years since Massiel's son was arrested and still no word on his release. The government keeps saying they're working on it, but every day feels like an eternity for them 💔. I think Delcy Rodríguez's words are just empty promises - until the regime actually makes some real changes, these releases aren't going to happen 🚫. Meanwhile, protesters like Mileidy and her partner Eric are still fighting for justice outside the police detention center in Caracas 👊. They're not giving up hope, but it's heartbreaking to see how desperate they've become 😔.

OMG, can't believe how messed up this situation is 🤯🚨! Maduro's regime is literally playing with people's lives and it's soooo unfair 💔 #JusticeForVenezuelaPrisoners #ReleaseThemNow 💥 The fact that families have been waiting for over 2 years to see their loved ones free is just heartbreaking ❤️ Can't the government see that this is a sign of weakness, not strength? 🤷‍♂️ And what's with the slow pace of releases? Is it really too much to ask for some real change? 🙄 #VenezuelaDeservesBetter 😔

I mean, come on... 600 political prisoners still locked up? That's crazy! 🤯 And Maduro's behind bars now and still no releases for his loved ones? It just doesn't add up. I need some concrete sources on this one before I start believing the government's story. What's the real reason behind these arrests? Is it just another excuse to silence opposition? The people have a right to know what's going on here! 📰

I mean, I'm sure it has nothing to do with the fact that the current president just so happens to be facing some "criminal" charges himself 😏. It's totally not a case of, you know, "you scratch my back, I'll release your loved ones." The fact that hundreds of families are still waiting for their incarcerated relatives to be freed is just... impressive? 🙃

And who needs transparency when the government can just promise releases and then follow up with some half-hearted promises of investigation? It's not like it's a PR stunt or anything... 💁‍♀️ The fact that experts are questioning the sincerity of Maduro's successor's words just goes to show how well-received this whole "releasing prisoners" thing is 🙄.

But hey, what do I know? Maybe these families will finally get their loved ones back and everything will magically be okay. Until then, let's just enjoy the thrill ride that is Venezuela's justice system... 🎢

I'm so worried about those Venezuelan families who are still waiting for their loved ones to come home! 🤕 It's been over 2 years since José Ángel Barreno Cordones was thrown behind bars and his mom, Massiel, is still holding on to hope 💪 But it's getting harder and harder for her every day... what if he never gets out? 🙏 And those protesters who are camping out at the Zone 7 police detention center? They're so brave, but I can only imagine how scared and frustrated they must be feeling 😓 And that expert, Orlando Pérez, is spot on - it's not like Maduro's regime is trying to make things better for Venezuela... they just want to keep clinging to power 💔

I don't feel sorry for Maduro being arrested yet 🤔. He's been known to abuse power and silence his opponents for years. We shouldn't be surprised that he's facing the consequences of his actions. The fact that hundreds of families are still waiting for their loved ones to be released is a tragic reminder of the regime's cruelty. But let's not pretend like Maduro's arrest is going to magically fix everything 💔. It's just another step in a long game of cat and mouse between him and the international community. We need more than just one person being held accountable – we need real change, and that takes time 🕰️.

this is getting so crazy 🤯 Maduro's behind bars and his regime is still dragging its feet on releasing political prisoners 🕰️ it's like they're playing a game of cat and mouse with the families, keeping them in limbo for years 💔 Massiel waiting for her son to be released has been through hell and back 😩 what does it take for Maduro to let his people go? 🤷‍♂️

I dont think Maduro's behind bars for long 🚔👮‍♂️. Thinks he can just get out of US custody and back to his old tricks? 🤣 Please, that wont fly. This whole thing stinks like a rotten avocado in the street. People are still languishing in those Venezuelan jails, and nothing's changing... it's all just a farce. Can we trust Delcy Rodríguez' words now? 😒 I think not. These protests by families need to keep going until something actual changes. No more empty promises from Maduro or his cronies. Time's up! ⏰

I'm really worried about these families who've been waiting for so long for their loved ones to be released. It's just not fair that they're being held in detention without a proper trial or due process 🤕. The fact that the government is using flimsy charges like "phone pairing" as an excuse to keep people locked up is really suspicious. I mean, what kind of system allows for arbitrary arrests and detention on trumped-up charges? It's just not right.

And it's even more frustrating when the new president says she wants to release all political prisoners, but nothing seems to be happening 🚫. The Maduro regime needs to take responsibility for its actions and start making amends with the people who've been wronged by their oppressive policies.

These protests are a testament to the resilience of the Venezuelan people, who refuse to give up on justice and freedom 💪. I hope that somehow, someway, these families will get the answers they're looking for soon. It's been too long already 😔.

I'm really worried about these families who've been waiting for so long to see their loved ones free 🤕💔 It's heartbreaking to think that they're still stuck in limbo while Maduro and his regime are trying to maintain power 🚫 These women camping out for over two weeks, not getting any sleep or support from the government... it's a cry for help 🌪️

We need to focus on finding solutions, not just blaming each other 💡 The situation is dire, but we can't give up hope 🌈 Every time there's a glimmer of light, like when Delcy Rodríguez promised releases, it feels like a step forward ⏳️ But until then, these families will keep fighting for justice and freedom 💪

I also want to acknowledge the importance of mental health support for these protesters 🤗 They're going through so much emotional turmoil... we need to be there for them, too 🌈

🌎💔
I feel so bad for these families who have been waiting for over 2 years to see their loved ones released 🕰️😩. It's like, you're stuck in limbo and can't even plan for your future 🤯. I think the government is just playing a game of "keep them guessing" 😒. Like, releasing some prisoners sounds good on paper, but it's all about PR at this point 📺.

Here's a simple mind map to show how I feel:
```
+---------------+
| Frustration |
| Exhaustion |
| Hopeless |
+---------------+
|
| Systemic
v
+-------------------------------+
| Government plays PR game |
| Releasing some prisoners to |
| appease international pressure|
+-------------------------------+
```
But seriously, it's like they're not taking the suffering of these families into account 🤷‍♀️. It's all about maintaining power and control 💪. I wish there was a way to make them see the human side of this 🌈.

🤔 I just got back from the most random vacation and I saw this crazy documentary about animals 🐠🌴. Anyway, back to Venezuela... it's so sad for these families waiting for their loved ones. I mean, 2 years is a really long time to wait, you know? 🕰️ My friend's sister was arrested in college for something stupid and she had to wait like, forever for her case to be closed.

I don't really get why the government can't just release these people already... it sounds like they're just trying to keep them quiet or something. 😒 Does anyone know what's going on with Operation Gideon? I feel like I've seen that name before in my history books, but I'm not sure what it was about.

I just wish the Venezuelan people could have some peace and stability right now 🙏. It's like they're living in a constant state of crisis or something. I'd love to see some updates on how this whole situation is playing out... maybe someone can explain it to me? 😅

THE SITUATION IN VENEZUELA IS SO FRUSTRATING!!! IT'S BEEN TWO YEARS SINCE MASSIEL CORDONES WAITED FOR HER SON JOSE ANGEL BARRENO CORDONES TO BE RELEASED FROM PRISON AND YET HE'S STILL IN THERE. IT'S LIKE THE GOVERNMENT JUST FEELS LIKE THEY'RE TAKING PEOPLE FOR A RIDE.

THEY SAY THEY WANT TO RELEASE THESE POLITICAL PRISONERS BUT NOBODY TRUSTS THEM ANYMORE. IT'S ALL ABOUT CONSOLIDATING POWER, NOT DEMOCRATISATION. AND THE FACT THAT MADURO IS NOW IN THE US WHILE HIS SUCCESSOR IS TALKING ABOUT RELEASES JUST MAKES IT WORSE.

THE FAMILIES ARE FIGHTING FOR THEIR LOVED ONES TO BE FREE BUT IT FEELS LIKE THEY'RE GETTING NOWHERE FAST. I HOPE SOMETHING CHANGES SOON!!! 🤯
