Israel has extended its ban on Al Jazeera’s operations by 90 days, the network said in a statement. The decision prohibits broadcasting and internet companies, YouTube, and services to the network inside Israel.
The order was signed by Israeli Communications Minister Shlomo Karahi and announced Sunday. This extends an existing ban on Al Jazeera's operations which was initially set to expire next month.
Al Jazeera says it has received nine days' notice of the extension decision and reserves its right to pursue every legal step. The network denies being a threat to national security, a claim cited by Israel for shutting down its services in 2024.
The latest development comes after an Israeli court initially approved a two-year ban on Al Jazeera in May 2024, following allegations that the Qatar-based news organization was involved in anti-Israel propaganda.
Critics of the move say it is part of a broader campaign to suppress the media in Israel and silence those who report on its actions in the occupied Palestinian territories.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his former Defence Minister Yoav Gallant are wanted by the International Criminal Court for war crimes in Gaza, which has been the subject of Al Jazeera's reporting.
