How Badenoch's meeting with Mike Johnson led to Trump's Chagos deal rant

UK PM Keir Starmer unleashes rare rebuke on Donald Trump over Chagos Islands deal, North Sea oil drilling and Greenland. In a shocking public scolding, the British Prime Minister accused Trump of deploying "words that were different to his previous words of welcome and support" in reference to the UK's agreement with Mauritius to hand over sovereignty of the Chagos Islands.

Starmer told the House of Commons that President Trump had deployed those words for "the express purpose of putting pressure on me and Britain." The Prime Minister stated, "He wants me to yield on my position, and I'm not going to do so...I will not yield. Britain will not yield on our principles and values about the future of Greenland and the threats of tariffs."

The unusual rebuke came after a meeting between UK Conservative Party leader Kemi Badenoch and Mike Johnson, the Republican speaker of the House of Representatives. The two discussed the Chagos deal and North Sea oil drilling before Johnson spoke with Trump.

Trump had recently criticized the Chagos deal on his Truth Social platform, calling it an "act of GREAT STUPIDITY" and stating that Greenland needs to be acquired for national security reasons. Starmer's criticism has been characterized as a significant moment in the dynamic between the UK and US governments, potentially altering their relationship.

Labour government officials had agreed to hand over sovereignty of Chagos to Mauritius in October 2024 under pressure from Washington. The deal was reached at a cost projected to be Β£3.4 billion. British officials said that Trump's administration had expressed concerns about what would happen to the Diego Garcia military base if Mauritius won a case at the International Court of Justice.

The situation remains unchanged with Starmer pressing ahead with the Chagos deal, while Trump is threatening Greenland but promising not to use force to take control of the territory.

I'm shocked that Keir Starmer finally found his voice and called out Donald Trump's hypocrisy 🀯. I mean, who expected the PM to go toe-to-toe with a US President over Chagos Islands? But what really got me was when Trump said Greenland needs to be acquired for national security reasons... umm, hasn't that been the argument for years already? It just seems like another example of "do as I say, not as I do" πŸ˜’. Starmer's right to stand firm on Britain's principles and values, though - we can't let others dictate our decisions just 'cause they're powerful πŸ™…β€β™‚οΈ. Still, this is a big deal for the UK-US relationship... fingers crossed it'll lead to some actual progress 🀞

the UK PM is kinda doing what i expected from a country that's always talking about being independent and stuff πŸ€” but seriously, it's about time someone stood up to trump like this. his words are all over the place, one minute he's welcoming countries, next he's trying to strongarm them into doing his bidding. starmer is right to push back on this, the uk has its own interests and shouldn't be intimidated by a guy who's been tweeting weirdos for years πŸ™„ what's going on with trump's admin is super suspicious too, they're basically using the court system as a threat to get what they want. it's not cool, dude πŸ‘Ž

πŸ€” Just when you think politicians can't get any more dramatic... Keir Starmer going rogue on Donald Trump 🚫. I mean, who doesn't love a good public scolding? 😏 It's like he's saying, "Sorry not sorry, Mr. Trump" πŸ’β€β™‚οΈ. I'm kinda impressed that the UK PM is standing firm on their principles and values over this Chagos Islands deal and Greenland situation. 🌎 It's like they're saying, "No way, we won't be bullied or pressured into doing something that doesn't align with our interests". πŸ’ͺ

OMG, like I'm literally shocked 🀯! The UK PM just roasted Donald Trump in the House of Commons and it's giving me LIFE πŸ’β€β™€οΈ! I mean, who does Trump think he is, trying to strong-arm Starmer into backing down on a deal that's already been agreed upon? Like, no way Jose, not on my watch πŸ™…β€β™‚οΈ!

And can we talk about how extra it is for Trump to go from "welcome and support" to "words of pressure"? It's like he thought he could just flip a switch and get what he wants. Newsflash, Trump: you don't get to do that 🚫.

I'm loving how Starmer stood firm on his principles and values though πŸ’ͺ. The UK will not be bullied into doing something that goes against their national interests. And let's be real, Greenland is like, super important for the future of the Arctic region 🌎.

This whole situation is giving me major "format freak" vibes πŸ“ŠπŸ‘€. It's all about structure and consistency, you know? Trump wants to flip the script on Starmer, but he can't because the PM has got a solid plan in place πŸ—ΊοΈ.

I think it's hilarious that Keir Starmer just roasted Donald Trump in Parliament . Like, what a bold move, right? Starmer's all about being tough and standing up for Britain's interests – I'm here for it 🀣.

Honestly though, I think Trump's criticism of the Chagos deal was pretty reasonable. It is a big chunk of land that could potentially hold some major energy resources...and let's be real, the guy's trying to get ahead on the global stage . The fact that Starmer's still pushing forward with it despite Trump's concerns just shows that he's not exactly thinking outside the box πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ.

I also think it's kinda funny how everyone's making a big deal about this meeting between Kemi Badenoch and Mike Johnson. Like, what did they even discuss? A fancy dinner party or something? 😏

omg I'm literally fascinated by this 🀯 news about Keir Starmer rebuking Donald Trump over the Chagos Islands deal! like, can you even imagine a PM going toe-to-toe with the US President on live TV? 😲 the way Starmer said "I will not yield" and "Britain will not yield" is so powerful πŸ™Œ it's all about setting boundaries and standing up for what you believe in πŸ’ͺ

I'm also loving how this rebuke highlights the shift in dynamics between the UK and US governments πŸ”„ like, we're seeing a change in how they communicate and negotiate with each other πŸ‘€ and I think that's super interesting to watch unfold πŸ“Ί

anyway, back to the format πŸ€”... have you noticed how Starmer's statement is all about clarity and concision? no beating around the bush πŸ’β€β™€οΈ just straight-up saying what he means and standing by his words πŸ‘Š I'm totally here for that πŸ’―

I don’t usually comment but... I think it’s pretty interesting how Starmer went after Trump like that πŸ€”. Like, yeah, Trump's been all over the place with his words and policies, and you can't just ignore them or pretend they're not a thing. But, at the same time, I feel bad for Kemi Badenoch - she was trying to get info out of Johnson before it even got to Trump πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ. And what's going on with the Chagos deal and Greenland is already super complicated... like, why do we need a public scolding from Starmer? Can't they just negotiate in private or something? πŸ’Έ

πŸ€” I've got tea on this one... think Keir's going in hard because he knows the Brits are getting a bad rap over the Chagos Islands and North Sea oil drilling. Trump's been playing a dirty game trying to get the UK to back down, but Starmer's not having it πŸ™…β€β™‚οΈ. The thing is, the US has always had its eyes on Greenland, and now they're just being all coy about it. I'm not saying it's all bad for the UK, but we gotta keep our principles in check here... and by the way, Trump's got some serious nerve calling the Chagos deal an "act of GREAT STUPIDITY" 🀯. Anyway, this is gonna get interesting, mark my words πŸ’₯

idk why starmer's getting all bent outta shape over this chagos islands thing πŸ€”, like what's so special about it? the UK's just trying to make a tidy profit from selling off some islands to mauritius, and trump's just throwing his weight around because he can πŸ˜’. i mean, come on, Β£3.4 billion is a pretty penny, but it's not like the UK's going to lose its shirt if they hand over some rocks. btw, what's up with greenland? sounds like trump's just trying to distract us from something else πŸ™ƒ

just got out of this article... πŸ€” think starmer's right to stand firm on chagos islands and north sea oil drilling tho, cant let trump get away with using words to bully them into submission πŸ’ͺ gotta respect britains principle of not giving in to pressure from another country ⚠️ anyway, its kinda interesting how trump is trying to flex his muscles over greenland... 🌎 wonder if he's got a plan for that one πŸ€”

I'm low-key surprised that Starmer finally called Trump out like this πŸ€”πŸ’‘. It's been pretty obvious that Trump's been playing hardball with the UK on these issues. I mean, come on, an "act of GREAT STUPIDITY" for the Chagos deal? That's just trolling at this point πŸ˜‚.

But seriously, I think Starmer was right to push back against Trump's pressure tactics. The UK has a right to decide its own foreign policy and what it thinks is in its best interests. We can't let some guy on Twitter dictate how we run our country πŸ™…β€β™‚οΈ.

It's also interesting that this is happening at the same time as the North Sea oil drilling debate. I think both of these issues say a lot about Trump's priorities and how he views the world stage. Either way, it's clear that the UK won't be intimidated by him 😎.

I'm low-key impressed that Keir Starmer finally stood up for Britain's interests on this one 🀝🏼. I mean, we've been watching Trump's antics with Chagos and Greenland for ages, and it's about time someone called him out for being a bit of a bully πŸ™„. The UK's got its own principles and values to uphold, and Starmer shouldn't back down just because Trump's giving him a hard time πŸ˜’.

I'm also wondering if this is the start of a new dynamic between the two governments... will we see more of this kind of pushback from Labour on trade deals and foreign policy? πŸ€” One thing's for sure, it's not going to be boring while Starmer's at the helm πŸ˜‚.

🀯 I'm loving the fact that Keir Starmer is finally speaking truth to power! This UK PM isn't afraid to call out Trump for what he is - a master manipulator who can't even keep his own words straight πŸ™„. The Chagos Islands deal has been brewing for ages, and it's amazing how Trump is trying to spin this one in the worst possible way. And let's be real, Greenland is not going anywhere πŸ˜‚. Who needs national security threats when you've got climate change on your hands? Kudos to Starmer for standing firm on UK values and principles - we need more leaders like him! πŸ’ͺ

omg this is getting crazy 🀯... I mean, who expects the UK PM to call out Donald Trump like that? πŸ™„ it's clear Starmer's not having it with all the backtracking on deals and whatnot. the whole thing about the Chagos Islands just feels like a major PR mess for Trump tbh πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ... I'm kinda surprised Labour agreed to hand over sovereignty in the first place tho πŸ’Έ the Β£3.4 billion price tag is no joke πŸ€‘

πŸ€” I'm kinda surprised that Starmer called out Trump like that in public - it's pretty rare for PMs to do that, especially when they're dealing with a US President. Like, I get why Trump would want Britain to back down on this deal and stuff, but shouldn't they just be having a private chat about it instead of making it all public? πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ It feels kinda confrontational, even though Starmer's trying to stand firm on their principles... I guess that's what happens when you're dealing with someone who likes to tweet about politics and make bold statements. πŸ’¬ Does anyone think this is going to affect the UK-US relationship in any major ways? πŸ€”
