British track cyclist Emma Finucane smashed the women's flying 200m time-trial world record with a blistering average speed of 73.8km/h at the UEC Track Elite European Championships in Turkey. Her new world mark, achieved during qualifying on February 2nd, clocked in at an astonishing 9.759 seconds - nearly a quarter of a second faster than the previous best set by China's Yuan Liying last March.
Finucane's record-breaking ride eclipsed that of fellow Great Britain rider Sophie Capewell, who had become just the second woman to ride sub 10 seconds earlier in the competition. Finucane's incredible performance not only shattered her own personal best but also left fans and onlookers alike speechless.
"I was really nervous to execute the perfect ride," Finucane revealed in an interview after the event. "I think I pretty much went out there and did everything I possibly could technically. To come away, to look at the board and see 9.759 and break the world record is unbelievable."
This latest achievement cements Finucane's status as a cycling superstar, with her impressive collection of medals already including an Olympic gold medal in the team sprint alongside teammates Sophie Capewell and Katy Marchant.
The British women also excelled in other events at the championships, with Katie Archibald, Millie Couzens, Josie Knight, Anna Morris, and Kate Richardson claiming gold in the women's team pursuit.
