YouTube TV Channels Return Amid Dispute with Disney Over Renewal Deal
In a significant move, YouTube and Disney have reached an agreement that restores access to popular sports, entertainment, and news networks for the streaming service's subscribers. The deal marks a couple of weeks after Disney channels, including ESPN, FX, and ABC stations, were temporarily removed from YouTube TV due to an impasse over a renewal partnership.
The accord "recognizes the immense value of Disney's programming" and provides YouTube TV users with greater flexibility in their channel lineups, according to Disney Entertainment co-chairpersons Alan Bergman and Dana Walden. Similarly, ESPN Chairman Jimmy Pitaro expressed relief that the networks will be restored for fans to enjoy this weekend, including major college football events.
The dispute began on October 31 when Disney pulled its channels from YouTube TV due to disagreements over the renewal of their partnership. At the time, Google claimed that Disney used a blackout as a negotiating tactic to force price increases on customers. However, Disney countered that Google was refusing to pay fair rates for its channels and sought to eliminate competition by underbidding industry-standard terms.
Under the new agreement, YouTube TV subscribers will regain access to select live and library programming from ESPN, including content from ESPN Unlimited at no extra cost. The streaming service has also announced plans to offer Disney+ and Hulu bundles, as well as genre-based channel packages.
To compensate for the disruption, Google previously offered a $20 credit to eligible YouTube TV subscribers, which will still be available until December 9. The return of Disney channels marks a welcome recovery for users who had been missing these popular networks during their absence.
