Chicagoans protest in wake of ICE shootings in Minneapolis and Portland

Hundreds of Chicagoans gathered in two separate locations, Water Tower Park downtown and Edgewater on the North Side, to denounce the arrest of Venezuela's President Nicolás Maduro and the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) involvement in the killings of Renee Nicole Good and Silverio Villegas González. The protests took place as part of a national day of action against enhanced immigration enforcement by the Trump administration.

At Water Tower Park, Lucas Zakutansky, 20, of Bridgeport, chanted slogans while holding a sign that read "Not Me, Us". He was new to protesting and said he attended because his family members from Mexico had lost access to medical benefits.

Protesters in Edgewater included Andy Mitchell and his wife, who brought their sons to educate them on exercising their right to protest. Simmons, a state lawmaker, criticized President Donald Trump for "weaponizing" ICE.

The protests are the latest in a steady stream of anti-ICE demonstrations in Chicago over the last year. Organizers mentioned another protest planned for MLK Day on January 19.

Hodzic said that he and others were "struggling to go on with their day, feeling like we can’t keep going."

just saw this on reddit and i gotta say, its crazy how ppl in chicago are speaking out against the trump admin's actions 🤯😩 especially considering all the people affected by immigration enforcement. it makes me wonder what would happen if more ppl stood up for whats right? i know a lot of ppl from latino backgrounds who have family members who've been caught in this mess, its heartbreaking to see how unfair it is 🙏🌎

I'm so sorry I missed this thread but OMG what's going on in Chicago 🤯! The idea of protesting for people's rights is actually super inspiring and I love how Lucas was new to it too 🙌. It's a shame that his family members are affected by the lack of medical benefits, I hope something changes soon 🤞. I also agree with Simmons that ICE should not be used as a tool to intimidate people, it's so unfair 😔. The fact that Hodzic and others were struggling to cope with the daily struggles is heartbreaking 💔, but it's great that they're speaking out now. What do you guys think about the planned protest on MLK Day? 🤗

omg I'm literally still reeling from this news 🤯... I mean I get it, ICE is doing some super sketchy stuff and ppl need to speak out... but have u seen the pics of those protests? so many people! my heart is literally breaking thinking about Renee & Silverio's families 💔... I'm all for protesting, but sometimes I wish ppl could just talk it out with gov instead of taking matters into their own hands 🤷‍♀️... & what's up with the "Not Me, Us" sign? I feel like we're already so divided as a society, do we really need to be chanting slogans at each other? 🤔

omg what's the point of protesting if we ain't doin' anything about it lol 🤷‍♂️ like yeah we got people protestin in chicago but where's the change comin from? ICE is still gonna be there killin ppl and nobody's doin nothin about it. We need to take action not just chill on the couch 📺 and watch some vids of ppl protesting

Man, it's crazy how people power is taking a stand against these harsh immigration policies 🤯. I mean, imagine if your family was in a similar situation, you'd want to make some noise too. It's all about raising awareness and making a difference, even if it's just a small step 🌎. And it's awesome that young people like Lucas are getting involved, they're the future leaders we need 🔥. I also feel for Hodzic and others who are struggling to cope with the current situation, it's not easy to deal with this kind of stress 😔. The fact that there's a national day of action against enhanced immigration enforcement is a great sign, hope more people join in 🌟.

THE PROTESTS IN CHICAGO ARE TOTALLY UNDERSTANDABLE!!! I MEAN, WHO WANTS TO SEE PRESIDENT MADURO ARRESTED AND ICE KILLING PEOPLE?! IT'S LIKE, WE GOTTA STAND UP FOR THOSE VICTIMS' FAMILIES AND MAKE SURE THEY GET JUSTICE!!! I'M ALL FOR PROTESTS AND SPEAKING OUT AGAINST WHAT'S WRONG IN THIS COUNTRY!!! IT'S NOT JUST ABOUT THE FAMILY MEMBERS FROM MEXICO LOSING MEDICAL BENEFITS, IT'S ABOUT EVERYONE BEING TREATED EQUALLY AND RESPECTED!!!

man i feel bad for lucas, only 20 and already dealing with the stress of his family's situation 😕. i get why he wants to protest, but also think about how scary it must be to hold a sign in public with such strong emotions... like, what if someone gets mad or reports him? 🤔 anyway, gotta respect the dude's passion & willingness to make a change 🙌. it's not just about protesting, though - we need to talk about systemic issues & how they affect people's lives. can't just blame one guy (trump) for everything 🤷‍♂️

omg i cant even believe whats happenin in chicago rn 🤯 its like theyre standin up 2 the system & demandin justice 4 all those ppl who've been affected by ice. i mean lucas at water tower park, he's only 20 but hes out there fightin 4 a cause thats so close 2 his heart cuz his fam from mexico lost med benifits 🤕 that's wild. & simmons the lawmaker is straight fire, sayin trump's using ice as a weapon lol i feel the same way about it, its all about standin up 4 what's rite & makin sure everyone has access 2 healthcare & freedom 💖

Ugh this is getting out of hand 🤯 ...I mean I get it, people are hurting and they need answers... but ICE involvement in killings? That's just another level of crazy 🚫. I'm all for protesting and expressing your rights, but can't we try to have a more nuanced conversation about these issues instead of just being mad? 🤔 It's not just about the Trump admin, it's about how we treat our own people... we should be focusing on fixing that within our country before bringing in external forces 💯.

just saw this news about protests in chicago 🤔🌎 and i gotta say, i'm all for people standing up for what they believe in 💪 especially when it's about protecting the rights of those who need medical benefits most ❤️ it's crazy that a protest can be so emotional and personal, like hodzic said he was struggling to get through his day feeling like he couldn't keep going 😕 but at the same time, it's amazing to see people from all over chicago coming together for a cause 🌈👫 i'm not sure about everyone's views on trump's admin tho 🤷‍♂️ but when it comes to human rights and social justice, let's unite and raise our voices 💬

🚨 just saw this, it's getting worse out there... people in Chicago are protesting against the Trump admin's ICE policies after 2 more migrants got killed... 🤕 that Hodzic guy seems really shook up, saying he & others can't even get on with their day thinking about this stuff 😩 also, what's going on with those protests? Every week it's something new... water tower park had people chanting "not me, us" but is anyone getting anything done? 🤔

I'm so confused about this whole thing 🤔. Like, why is there a big deal about Venezuela's president getting arrested? Isn't that what happens when someone does something wrong? And what's the connection between his arrest and some people in Chicago protesting about immigration enforcement? My family has friends from Mexico too, and I don't know anyone who lost medical benefits because of it... 🤷‍♀️

I feel bad for Lucas Zakutansky, though - he was new to protesting and just wanted to help people. And what's with all the signs and chants? I get that people want to make a statement, but can't they just talk about it instead? It feels like a lot of drama 🙄.

I do know that there are a lot of people in Chicago who are worried about immigration enforcement, though. My friend's cousin is actually working with some organization to help people affected by ICE actions... I guess I should really learn more about this stuff! 📚

ICE is literally ruining lives I mean have you seen the stats on people being detained just because they're in the country on a visa or something? It's not even about the law it's about taking away basic rights. And Trump's all about this zero tolerance policy like what even is that? 🙄

I feel so bad for these people, you know? It's like they're living in a never-ending episode of "The Sopranos" or something. I mean, one day they're just minding their own business, and the next thing you know, ICE is at their doorstep. And now, they're protesting and stuff... it's all so sad 😔.

I was talking to my friend's cousin from Chicago, and he said that his sister is actually a nurse, but she can't work anymore because her husband got deported or something. I don't even know how you're supposed to explain this kind of thing to your kids, you know? "Hey, kiddo, Mommy can't take care of our family because Daddy was caught by the bad guys." It's just heartbreaking 🤕.

And what's with all these protests? It feels like we're stuck in some sort of Groundhog Day reboot. "Protest this", "protest that"... I'm just waiting for someone to come along and say, "You know what? Can't we all just get along?" But until then, I guess these people are just going to keep on protesting 🤝.

I'm kinda low-key worried about the state of our immigration system 🤔💡

Imagine if you were in Renee Nicole Good's shoes... losing loved ones, living without medical benefits, and still fighting for justice 💔

It's not just about Maduro or Trump, it's about people like us who care 💕 We need to use our voices to make a change 🗣️

I created this diagram to visualize the issue:
```
+---------------+
| ICE is involved |
+---------------+
|
|
v
+---------------+
| People losing |
| access to medical|
| benefits, facing|
| deportation threats|
+---------------+
|
|
v
+---------------+
| We can make a change|
| by using our voices|
| and demanding justice|
+---------------+
```
We need to keep protesting, educating ourselves, and supporting each other 🌈💪
