Chicago Tribune owner Alden wants to acquire publisher of northwest suburban Daily Herald

Alden Global Capital, owner of the Chicago Tribune, has announced plans to acquire the Daily Herald newspaper, a prominent source of news in northwest suburban Illinois. The move is seen as part of Alden's strategy to expand its reach through cost-cutting measures and acquisitions.

In a full-page ad published in Sunday's Tribune, Alden's ownership group offered Paddock Publications, the parent company of the Daily Herald, the highest bid for the paper. According to sources close to the situation, Alden is willing to pay 30% more than any other potential buyer, with additional employment terms to secure the loyalty of Daily Herald employees.

However, not everyone is optimistic about a sale. Some speculate that Paddock might be approached by Crystal Lake-based Shaw Media, which owns several newspapers and radio stations in northern Illinois and Iowa. The company's papers have significant overlap with those of the Daily Herald, making this possible.

One thing is clear: Alden Global Capital is known for its aggressive approach to acquisitions, as well as its history of reducing costs through buyouts and layoffs at its various publications. This has not been a particularly successful strategy in the past, with shareholders rebuffing Alden's bid for the Dallas Morning News last year.

Furthermore, Alden's recent acquisition of the Daily Herald's printing plant in Schaumburg was necessary due to the sale of the former Tribune printing facility for $200 million in 2022. The old plant has since been demolished to make way for a Bally's casino, highlighting the complexities and challenges that come with Alden's business model.

It remains to be seen whether Paddock will accept Alden's offer, or if Shaw Media will enter the fray as a potential buyer. Whatever the outcome may be, one thing is certain: the future of the Daily Herald hangs in the balance.

omg u guys, this is soooo sus! aldens plan 2 acquire daily herald is like 2 much 4 good πŸ€”. i mean, they've already had probs w/ dallas morning news & now they wanna just swoop in & buy daily herald too? that's like trying 2 put out a fire w/ a bucket of gasoline πŸ’¨. also, what's w/ them tryna reduce costs thru layoffs n stuff? thats not how u build a loyal workforce πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ. idk bout paddock publications tho, maybe they'll see through aldens BS & turn dwn da offer πŸ™…β€β™‚οΈ. fingers crossed 4 daily herald employees lol

πŸ€” This acquisition stuff got me thinking... why do we let companies just swoop in and buy what's already working? I mean, Alden's strategy might seem like a good way to cut costs, but at what cost? Those employees are people with families and livelihoods - don't they deserve some security? And what about the news we're reading? Is it still worth paying for if it's just gonna be cheaper somewhere else? πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ It makes me wonder, is all this just about profit over people?

Ugh, can you believe this? Another big corp trying to swoop in and buy out all our local news outlets... reminds me of when my dad used to get his paper delivered every morning from that old newspaper stand on Main St back in the 90s πŸ“°πŸ‘΅ Those were the days, man! People actually cared about reading the news before their coffee β˜•οΈ Nowadays it's all just about the bottom line and cutting costs... I mean, what's wrong with a little transparency and local ownership? πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ The Daily Herald's got such history in this community... it's like they're selling off a part of our heritage or something πŸ’”

I'm keeping an eye on this deal πŸ€”. It seems like Alden's aggressive approach to acquisitions is still on full swing πŸ’Έ. But let's not forget that cost-cutting measures can have a negative impact on local communities, especially when it comes to journalism πŸ‘Š. I'm worried about the Daily Herald losing its independence and local flavor πŸ“°. On the other hand, if Alden can bring in some much-needed investment, it could help Paddock Publications stay afloat πŸ’°. Either way, it's crucial for the community to be informed and engaged in this decision-making process πŸ’¬. I hope there are some checks and balances in place to ensure the Daily Herald remains a trusted source of news 🀞.

πŸ“° The thought of Alden Global Capital taking over the Daily Herald has me a bit nervous πŸ€”. I love our local news outlets and feel like they're what make our community really come alive. But at the same time, I get it - the media landscape is super competitive and financial struggles are real πŸ’Έ. If Paddock does accept Alden's offer, I just hope that Daily Herald employees will be taken care of πŸ™. We need local voices holding our leaders accountable, so fingers crossed that quality journalism won't be compromised πŸ“°πŸ’”

omg u guys i just can't even right now πŸ˜‚ so like aldens trying to buy the daily herald and i'm lowkey worried about what this means for the community in northwest subbies πŸ€” they're willing to pay 30% more than anyone else which is wild considering their past track record with cost-cutting measures πŸ’Έ it's like they think we won't notice when they start laying off employees or something 🚫 and then there's the thing about shaw media being a potential buyer which is just ugh let's not even get started πŸ˜’ i mean i love my daily herald as much as the next person but do we really want to be owned by the same ppl who own ballys casino in Schaumburg 🀣 anyway stay tuned folks this one's gonna be a wild ride 🎒

I'm getting a bad vibe from this acquisition πŸ€”. Like, I get it, cost-cutting and all that, but Alden's track record on this stuff is pretty spotty, if you ask me 😐. They just seem to be looking for ways to squeeze out more cash without really thinking about the impact on the actual people who use these newspapers πŸ“°. And now they're throwing their hat into the ring for another paper, and I'm not sure it's a good idea πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ. Maybe Paddock will see through the offer and find someone else to talk to? πŸ“ž

πŸ€” the more I think about it, the more worried I get... Alden Global Capital just wants to cut costs and make a quick buck off the Daily Herald. But what's gonna happen to all those good people working at that paper? They're not just employees, they're part of the community. And what about the content? Are we just gonna lose out on another local voice because some faceless company is trying to squeeze every last penny outta it?

I mean, I know Alden's got a history of... let's say "reorganizing" things, but this feels different. This feels like they're actually going to take away the heart and soul of that newspaper. And what about Shaw Media? They might just step in and buy it all up again... πŸ€‘

Ugh, can you believe this? πŸ™„ A newspaper that's been around for like, forever, and now it's just gonna be another cog in Alden's machine. I mean, what's next? The Chicago Sun-Times being sold off to some random company that doesn't care about journalism anymore?

I remember when my dad used to buy the Sunday papers every week. He'd read all the sports section and then spend hours arguing with me about who was gonna win the game. Those were the days... 😒 Now it's just a bunch of soulless corporations trying to make a quick buck.

And don't even get me started on the employees. I feel bad for 'em, 'cause they're gonna lose their jobs or have to deal with all sorts of other drama because Alden is cutting costs left and right. It's like, can't these people just make a living wage without having to sacrifice their sanity?

I hope Paddock puts up a fight, but at the end of the day, I'm sure it's gonna be some corporate giant that ends up owning the Daily Herald. πŸ˜”
