Campaigner Peter Tatchell arrested for carrying 'globalise the intifada' placard

Peter Tatchell, 74-year-old gay rights campaigner, faces arrest for expressing support of Palestinian resistance to Israeli occupation at London's Palestine solidarity march.

The activist held a placard with the phrase "globalise the intifada: Non-violent resistance. End Israel's occupation of Gaza & West Bank", sparking his detention by police. Tatchell called it an "attack on free speech," arguing that the word 'intifada' means uprising, rebellion or resistance against Israeli occupation and is not antisemitic.

He was taken to Sutton police station after the event, where a total of 13 arrests were made at the Palestine Coalition protest and one from the Stop the Hate counter demonstration. The Metropolitan Police had stated earlier that protesters who chanted "globalise the intifada" would now be arrested due to recent changes in their policies.

Tatchell also highlighted that his arrest is part of a broader trend of restricting peaceful protests, saying he has been defending Jewish people against far-right and Islamist extremism through various campaigns.

๐Ÿšจ๐Ÿ‘ฎโ€โ™‚๏ธ just saw the news about Peter Tatchell being arrested at that Palestine solidarity march... what's going on here? ๐Ÿค” can't believe they're cracking down on peaceful protests like this. 13 people gettin arrested and one from a counter demo too? ๐Ÿ˜ฌ it's like they're tryin to silence people who care about the cause. Tatchell is sayin' that 'intifada' ain't antisemitic, but do the cops really care about nuance? ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ this just shows how far restrictions on free speech have gone in this country... what's next, gettin arrested for wearin a hoodie with a certain slogan? ๐Ÿ˜ฌ

can't believe this is happenin'! ๐Ÿ˜ฑ 74-year-old Peter Tatchell is just tryin' to show some love for the Palestinian people and they're arrestin' him? it's like, what even is the point of free speech if you can't express your opinion without gettin' locked up? ๐Ÿคฌ I mean, I get that Tatchell might've used a word that might be misinterpreted, but come on! intifada ain't exactly a dirty word, is it? ๐Ÿ’” and what's with the police just chillin' 'n' waitin' for protesters to say somethin' they don't like before throwin' 'em in the clink? ๐Ÿš” that's just not right. Tatchell's been fightin' against real hate, far-right and Islamist extremism, so I just can't understand why they're targetin' him now... ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ

๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ So Peter Tatchell gets caught for speaking out against Israel's occupation... yeah, because expressing solidarity with the Palestinian people is definitely a hate crime now ๐Ÿ™„. I'm shocked that the Met Police would be so quick to suppress dissenting voices โ€“ especially when they're advocating for non-violent resistance. It's like they forgot that freedom of speech isn't just about free speech... ๐Ÿ˜’. The fact that he was specifically targeted because of his placard is pretty telling, don't you think? ๐Ÿค” It's almost as if they want to send a message: quiet down and let the powerful speak ๐Ÿ’ธ. I'm not surprised that 13 people were arrested at the protest โ€“ it just goes to show that peaceful protest has become a thing of the past... unless you're supporting Israel, of course ๐Ÿ˜’.

man... this is like, really sad ๐Ÿค• think about it, we're living in times where even expressing support for someone's right to resist an occupation can get you arrested... what does that say about our society? is it not a fundamental human right to stand up against injustice and fight for freedom? ๐Ÿค” and I mean, Peter Tatchell has been a champion of gay rights and human rights in general, he's like, the ultimate symbol of courage and conviction ๐Ÿ’ช but now, his own convictions are being used against him... it's like, what's next? are we gonna start arresting people for wanting to speak out against systemic inequality? ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ

I'm worried about this ๐Ÿค•... Peter Tatchell is an activist who's always fighting for what's right, like LGBTQ+ rights & stopping hate groups. But now, he's being arrested just because he showed support for Palestinians protesting against Israel's occupation? That doesn't seem fair ๐Ÿ˜”.

I think the police are making a big mistake by targeting people who are peacefully expressing their opinions. The word 'intifada' might be used in different ways, but I don't see how it's bad to talk about resistance & rebellion when we're talking about someone being oppressed ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ.

It feels like the police are trying to silence people who don't agree with them, and that's not okay at all. We need to be able to express our opinions without fear of getting arrested or hurt ๐Ÿ’”. This is a threat to free speech, and I think it's really unfortunate ๐Ÿค•.

I'm totally shocked ๐Ÿคฏ by this news! I mean, come on, Peter Tatchell is a legend in the LGBTQ+ community and a vocal advocate for human rights, especially when it comes to protecting the rights of Palestinians. His message of non-violent resistance was clearly conveyed and not meant to be divisive or hateful. The fact that he's being targeted by the Met Police is a huge concern ๐Ÿšจ - it sets a worrying precedent for free speech and peaceful protest in our country. I think we need to stand up for Tatchell and for the right to express ourselves without fear of arrest ๐Ÿ‘Š. This isn't about Palestinian rights or Israeli policies, it's about protecting our fundamental human rights and freedoms #FreePeterTatchell #PeacefulProtest #HumanRightsMatter

I just can't believe what's going on here ๐Ÿคฏ. So Peter Tatchell gets arrested for showing support for Palestinian resistance at a march? It seems like the whole system is out to get people who want to make some noise about important issues ๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธ.

I mean, I get that Israeli-Palestinian conflict can be super complicated and sensitive, but come on, can't we have a nuanced discussion without someone getting arrested for their opinions? The word "intifada" isn't inherently antisemitic, it's just a term used to describe resistance against occupation. It's like calling for freedom in a occupied country โ€“ you'd think that would be protected by free speech laws ๐Ÿ˜’.

It's not the first time something like this has happened, but it feels especially egregious when it targets someone who's been advocating for human rights and defending marginalized communities ๐Ÿค. The fact that 13 people got arrested in total just highlights how restrictive our protest laws have become. It's like we're living in a time where we can't express our opinions without fear of repercussions ๐Ÿ˜ณ.

I'm so glad the Met decided to crack down on free speech ๐Ÿ™„. I mean, who needs open discussion about sensitive topics when you can just arrest someone for having a different opinion? It's not like Peter Tatchell was trying to promote peace and understanding or anything... ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ The word "intifada" clearly isn't antisemitic, but that doesn't matter, apparently. The fact is, the police are more interested in policing people's words than their actions. It's all about control, not justice ๐Ÿ˜’. And by the way, what's next? Arresting people for wearing a certain type of clothing or having a particular viewpoint on social media? ๐Ÿคฏ The line between free speech and hate speech is supposed to be pretty clear, but apparently, it's just up for interpretation now...

I'm shocked ๐Ÿ˜ฑ, what's going on with our rights to protest? I mean, come on! Peter Tatchell is like a hero for fighting for peace and justice, and now he gets arrested for standing up for the Palestinian cause? It's just crazy ๐Ÿคฏ. He's got a point too, that word "intifada" doesn't have anything to do with hating Israel, it's just about resisting the occupation. And it's not like he was being violent or anything, just holding a placard and chanting some slogans. This is a total attack on free speech ๐Ÿ’”. It's like they're trying to silence people who are speaking out against injustice. I'm all for peaceful protests, but this isn't about that, this is about controlling what we can say and do ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ. The police should be protecting our rights, not arresting us for exercising them ๐Ÿ‘ฎโ€โ™‚๏ธ. This is getting out of hand... ๐Ÿšจ

๐Ÿค” This is getting scary. I mean, what's next? Free speech is already under attack in this country ๐Ÿšซ. Peter Tatchell was just standing up for a cause, expressing his support for the Palestinian people, and he gets arrested for it ๐Ÿ˜ฑ. It's like they're trying to silence us before we even start talking about these issues. The word "intifada" is clearly defined, so who's deciding what's antisemitic? ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ This is a classic case of the government playing politics with our freedoms ๐Ÿ’”.

I'm freaking out over this, guys ๐Ÿคฏ! Did you see the stats on protests in London? They're down by 50% since 2020 ๐Ÿ“‰. The Met's new policy on "globalising the intifada" is basically a recipe for censorship ๐Ÿ”’. I mean, what's next? Arresting people for wearing 'Boycott, Divestment & Sanctions' t-shirts? ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ According to Human Rights Watch, 70% of Palestinians support non-violent resistance against Israeli occupation ๐Ÿ“Š. It's time to rethink these policies and let people express themselves freely ๐Ÿ’ฌ. Here's a chart comparing arrests at Palestine Coalition protests in 2022 vs 2023:

arrests
--------------------------------
| Year | Arrests |
| --- | --- |
| 2022 | 5 |
| 2023 | 13 |

The trend is clear - more police, less freedom of speech ๐Ÿš”. Let's keep fighting for our rights and the rights of others! ๐Ÿ’ช

Ugh, this is getting outta hand ๐Ÿคฏ. I mean, Peter Tatchell's got every right to express his opinion on the Palestinian resistance, but does that mean the cops gotta crack down on him like he did something wrong? It's all about context, guys... the word "intifada" just means uprising or rebellion in Arabic - it doesn't necessarily have antisemitic connotations ๐Ÿค”. And what's with these new policies from the Met Police? Are they seriously gonna start arresting people for having a peaceful opinion now? ๐Ÿšซ It's like they're trying to silence dissenting voices, which is exactly what we should be encouraging in a free society ๐Ÿ’ฌ. And can we talk about how this reflects on our country's values? I mean, I'm all for supporting the Palestinian cause and standing up against Israeli occupation, but let's not confuse that with being antisemitic or promoting violence ๐Ÿค. This is just sad to see...

I'm getting the vibe that this whole thing with Peter Tatchell's arrest is like, totally fishy ๐ŸŸ... I mean, what's next? Arresting ppl for showing support of a cause? It feels like they're trying to stifle free speech and control what we can say. I don't think "intifada" is even a bad word, it just means people are standing up against occupation & oppression! ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ The fact that the police are cracking down on peaceful protests just to make ppl feel uncomfortable or guilty about expressing their opinions is wild. It's like they're trying to silence the voices of those who need to speak out against injustice. I'm so worried about our rights as a society right now... ๐Ÿ˜•

OMG u wont bliev whats goin on! They r tryna shut down ppl who are speakin out 4 Palestinian rights ๐Ÿคฌ Peter Tatchell is like a total legend & his arrest is so unfair ๐Ÿ™„ I mean, intifada just means uprising or resistance, its not antisemitic @ all!!! Its like they r tryna stifle free speech & chill ppl from expressin themselves ๐Ÿšซ Police should b focusin on the real problems, like far-right extremism, instea of harassin peaceful protesters ๐Ÿค

๐Ÿค• this police policy on peaceful protests is crazy ๐Ÿ™„ its like they want to shut down ppl from expressing their views & opinions on sensitive topics ๐Ÿ˜ณ 14 arrests in one event? thats just ridiculous ๐Ÿšซ peter tatchell seems like a genuine guy trying to raise awareness about the israeli occupation, and his arrest isnt gonna make the intifada go away ๐ŸŒช๏ธ the fact that they're targeting ppl who chant "globalise the intifada" with antisemitism accusations is just another way to silence dissenting voices ๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธ its not easy being a vocal advocate for justice & equality, but someone's gotta do it ๐Ÿ’ช

omg like what's going on with peter tatchell tho? I was thinking about our school's anti-bullying campaign last month and how important it is to have free speech in protest events ๐Ÿคฏ. i mean, he's been fighting for human rights & gay rights for years and this is the thanks he gets? 13 people got arrested at a peaceful protest in london?! that's just not right ๐Ÿ’”. and yeah, the word 'intifada' has nothing to do with antisemitism - it's like when we're discussing the history of the world war in class & we have to consider different perspectives ๐ŸŒŽ. peter tatchell's arrest is a warning sign for all the activists out there who want to make a difference ๐Ÿ’ฅ. what if they start arresting people at our school's student-led initiatives? that would be a total disaster ๐Ÿ˜ฑ

๐Ÿค” this is so messed up lol its like they're trying to silence anyone who dares to speak out against injustice. i mean Peter Tatchell has been fighting for gay rights and human rights for decades, and now he gets arrested for showing support for the Palestinian people. its not about being antisemitic, its about standing up against occupation and oppression. ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ and what really gets me is that they're trying to restrict peaceful protests now. like, whats next? arresting ppl who hold signs that say "stop police brutality"? or "end systemic racism"? ๐Ÿšซ i think its time for the Met Police to rethink their policies and let people express themselves without fear of arrest ๐Ÿ‘ฎโ€โ™‚๏ธ

Ugh ๐Ÿ˜ฌ this is getting crazy ๐Ÿคฏ! I mean, come on, can't we all just be able to show some solidarity with the Palestinians without getting arrested? It's like they're sending a message that if you want to support a cause, you have to agree with everything that's being said, which isn't how it works ๐Ÿ’ก. And what's with the new police policies? ๐Ÿšจ are we living in some kind of dystopian novel where protesting is a crime? It's just frustrating ๐Ÿค• when people get caught up in the heat of the moment and forget about free speech ๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธ. I'm all for standing up against Israeli occupation, but can't we do it without getting treated like terrorists? ๐Ÿšซ

๐Ÿค• just saw the news about Peter Tatchell getting arrested for speaking out at a pro-Palestinian march and I'm totally shook ๐Ÿ™…โ€โ™‚๏ธ. I mean, isn't free speech supposed to be a fundamental right? It's crazy that someone can get in trouble for expressing support of Palestinian resistance - it's not like they're advocating for violence or anything ๐Ÿ’โ€โ™€๏ธ. The word 'intifada' is actually about resisting occupation and fighting for justice, so what's the problem? ๐Ÿค”

And let's be real, this just feels like another example of how peaceful protests are being suppressed ๐Ÿšซ. I'm all for people standing up for what they believe in, but not when it comes at the cost of their freedom to express themselves ๐Ÿ’ช. We need to stand with Peter Tatchell and support our rights to protest peacefully ๐ŸŒŸ.
