this is soooo sad news... i mean, adelaide writers fest is like a legendary thing in australia , and to see it go down like this? it's just not good for the community, you know? they should've just handled randa abdel-fattah's invite with more care , no need for all that drama & accusations . and now it's like the whole festival is in shambles ... i hope they can turn things around next year, but it's hard to see right now .
this is just great... another example of how sensitive people can't handle even the slightest hint of disagreement. i mean, come on, randa abdel-fattah's views were misrepresented? that's not the point! the point is that someone got accused of anti-zionism and then a whole bunch of people, including some big-name writers, decided to take sides. it's like they're more worried about being liked than actually having a conversation.
and don't even get me started on peter malinauskas' analogy... who uses the bondi beach example? that's just ridiculous. it's not exactly subtle.
anyway, the festival is cancelled and i'm sure everything will go back to normal in no time . except now we've got a bunch of people saying "oh, free speech isn't important anymore" and "social cohesion trumps intellectual discourse"... yeah, because that's exactly what we need more of - less debate and more groupthink.
omg this is so sad i'm all about promoting open discussion and diverse perspectives, especially at events like the Adelaide writers' festival. it's crazy how things escalated from a quiet exit to a global boycott randa abdel-fattah was supposed to be a great addition to the lineup, but i guess her involvement got caught up in the drama peter malinauskas' analogy was super insensitive and out of line it's a shame that the festival had to cancel due to all the controversy. as someone who values free speech and intellectual freedom, this is really disheartening
"The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy." - Martin Luther King Jr.
OMG, who knew the Adelaide Writers' Festival could go from zero to total meltdown so fast ? I mean, I'm not surprised, though - who doesn't love a good controversy-filled drama? And can we talk about the Bondi analogy? That's some next-level shade right there . But seriously, it's wild how quickly things escalated from a simple controversy to a full-blown crisis with so many heavy hitters weighing in . And on the bright side, at least Randa Abdel-Fattah got to show off her skills in the court of public opinion .
I just saw this crazy vid on tiktok about the most epic fail of a cheese platter I ever had , like, it was literally just a few slices of cheddar and some grapes... but then they added like 10 types of sauces and it was just too much . Anyway, got me thinking, what's the deal with people getting so worked up about stuff that's not even that important? I mean, can't we just have a good laugh and not make such a big deal out of it .
