Blue Origin to Ground its Space Tourist Flights Amid Lunar Focus Shift
In a significant shift, Blue Origin has announced that it will be halting its space tourist flights on New Shepard for at least two years as the company prioritizes developing human lunar capabilities. The move comes as part of NASA's Artemis program, where Blue Origin is working alongside SpaceX to create landers capable of transporting astronauts to the lunar surface.
Initially contracted to build a landing system for the Artemis V mission, the US space agency last year asked Blue Origin to design an alternative lander for the Artemis III mission due to SpaceX's ongoing Starship development delays. The Artemis III is set to be the first crewed moon landing mission in the program, with the Trump administration aiming to complete it before the end of President Biden's term.
New Shepard, which has flown 38 times and carried 99 passengers since its inaugural tourist flight in 2021, will no longer take tourists to suborbital space. The spacecraft is expected to remain grounded until Blue Origin completes its lunar lander development work for NASA.
