'Baldur's Gate 3' Was Always Going to Have a Weird Future

The Fate of Baldur's Gate 3: A Cautionary Tale of Adaptation and Loss of Creative Control

It wasn't a surprise when news broke that HBO had adapted the fantasy RPG series Baldur's Gate - but it was still a shock to see how the reception would play out. The showrunners, Craig Mazin, who brought us The Last of Us, are now at the helm, and fans of that property have made their feelings known about this new adaptation.

The involvement of Wizards of the Coast, the owner of Dungeons & Dragons, only adds another layer of complexity to an already complicated situation. Larian Studios, the creator of Baldur's Gate 3, is no longer on board, which has left a lot of questions unanswered about the future of the franchise.

Larian's sudden decision to leave Baldur's Gate behind came as a shock to fans and the gaming community at large. The studio had built up a reputation for doing things right by engaging with their fanbase through memes, sales, and revealing player stats. This sudden change in direction has left many wondering if Larian was simply burned out or if there were deeper issues at play.

The reason behind this departure is still unclear, but the timing couldn't be more convenient. Wizards of the Coast needed a break from the controversy surrounding their Open Gaming License, and now Larian is free to pursue other projects - including Divinity: Original Sin 2, which has become one of the studio's most successful titles.

The announcement that Baldur's Gate would no longer continue after its third installment was met with both relief and disappointment. While it was clear that Larian had earned a reputation for delivering high-quality games, their decision to move on was seen as a betrayal by some fans who were deeply invested in the world of Baldur's Gate.

However, this adaptation may yet prove to be a turning point for the franchise. As the first real addition to the Baldur's Gate universe since its third installment, it has given fans an opportunity to process their emotions and move forward with a new perspective.

In the end, whether or not this show will live up to expectations remains to be seen. But one thing is certain - Larian Studios' decision to leave behind the world of Baldur's Gate was both shocking and necessary for their own creative growth.

OMG lol I cant even right now! So HBO takes on baldurs gate 3 & its like fans are so salty about Larians decision to just bail. Im not sure what's more sus, the fact that they're doing an adaption or the fact that Craig Mazin is at the helm ๐Ÿค”๐Ÿ‘€ Larian had some amazing things going for them with their community engagement & stuff. But hey, I guess its all good & on the bright side, Wizards of the Coast gets a break from all the drama w/ the Open Gaming License ๐Ÿ˜…. Now, Ill be keepin an eye on this show & see if it can live up to expectations ๐Ÿ“บ๐Ÿ‘€

I'M SO DOWN FOR AN ADAPTATION OF BALDUR'S GATE 3, BUT IT'S GOTTA BE DONE RIGHT!!! I mean, the original game is a CLASSIC ๐Ÿคฉ, but if they're gonna mess with it, they gotta listen to the fans and get the story right. I'm all for some creative freedom, but not at the expense of what made BG3 so amazing in the first place. Larian's departure was super surprising, but maybe it's for the best - they've got some awesome games under their belt (like Divinity: OS2) and now they can focus on something new.

I HOPE CRAIG MAZIN AND HIS TEAM ARE PAYING ATTENTION TO THE FANS' FEEDBACK, THOUGH. We need to see some love for the OG game and its characters ๐Ÿคž. It's gonna be interesting to see how this adaptation turns out - fingers crossed it's gonna be AMAZING!!! ๐Ÿ˜Ž

I'm still trying to wrap my head around Larian's sudden departure from Baldur's Gate ๐Ÿคฏ. I mean, they were always super open with their fans and it felt like they really cared about the community. Now that they're moving on, I can see how this adaptation could be a fresh start for the franchise. But at the same time, some fans are gonna miss them ๐Ÿ˜”. I'm curious to see how HBO's version of Baldur's Gate will turn out - fingers crossed it'll do justice to the original game ๐Ÿคž.

๐Ÿค” I gotta say, I'm both excited and nervous about this new HBO adaptation of Baldur's Gate ๐ŸŽฅ. As a fan of the series myself, it's cool that Wizards of the Coast is getting involved to bring this iconic world to life. However, I do have some reservations ๐Ÿ™„. Larian Studios was doing something right with their approach to engaging with fans, and I'm not sure how much creative control they'll have with a major adaptation.

I mean, Craig Mazin has proven himself as a talented showrunner with The Last of Us, but can he capture the essence of Baldur's Gate? ๐Ÿค” And what about the timing of Larian's departure? Was it really just burnout or something more... I don't know, studio politics ๐Ÿค‘?

Still, I'm curious to see how this adaptation turns out. Maybe it'll surprise us and become a fan favorite ๐Ÿ˜Š. But for now, I'll be keeping an eye on the development process to make sure they stay true to the spirit of Baldur's Gate ๐ŸŽฎ.

I'm surprised some fans are actually relieved that Larian's not making the next BG game, lol ๐Ÿ˜‚ they were so invested in it but honestly, I think they were just burnt out from playing as a fan for years and wanted to move on to other projects ๐Ÿค” Divinity: Original Sin 2 is still an amazing game btw! ๐Ÿ‘ And can we talk about how HBO's getting involved? Craig Mazin is known for making some wild choices with The Last of Us, I'm not sure if he's the right guy for this job ๐Ÿ’ญ But hey, at least it's giving us a chance to see the world of BG in a new light and whatnot ๐ŸŽฌ

I'm still trying to wrap my head around HBO's adaptation of Baldur's Gate ๐Ÿ˜•... I mean, I know it's not surprising that they'd want to take on a classic RPG like this, but I wish Larian Studios had more control over the project ๐Ÿค”. They've built such a loyal fanbase with Divinity: Original Sin 2 and all, so it's weird to see them leaving behind something so beloved ๐Ÿ’”.

I'm curious to see how Craig Mazin (of The Last of Us fame) will bring this world to life on screen though ๐Ÿ‘€. Will they do it justice? Only time will tell ๐Ÿ•ฐ๏ธ. On the bright side, Wizards of the Coast needed a break from all the controversy surrounding their Open Gaming License, so I guess that's a silver lining ๐Ÿ™.

Still, as much as I love Larian Studios' games, I think this decision was for the best for them ๐Ÿ’ฏ... they can now focus on other projects and give themselves some creative freedom ๐Ÿ”“. Fingers crossed that HBO's adaptation will be awesome, but if not, I'll just have to stick with my trusty ol' Baldur's Gate 3 game ๐ŸŽฎ๐Ÿ‘

I'm so confused about what happened with Baldur's Gate 3... I mean, on one hand I'm super hyped that it's being adapted into a show ๐Ÿคฉ but on the other hand I feel bad for Larian Studios because they worked so hard on it and now they're moving on to new projects? It's like, what about all the fans who were invested in the game? ๐Ÿค” I've been playing the Divinity: Original Sin 2 series for years and I love how Larian engaged with their community through memes and stuff. It was a big part of why I loved those games so much ๐Ÿ˜Š But at the same time, I get it - sometimes you gotta take risks and try new things, even if that means leaving something behind ๐Ÿ”„

aww man i feel so bad 4 larian studio ๐Ÿค• they put their heart n soul into baldur's gate 3 n now its gone ๐Ÿ˜” but on the bright side, it's gonna be awesome to see craig mazin bringin' his magic to hbo ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿผ let's give 'em a chance 2 make it happen! ๐Ÿ’ช

omg i'm still trying to wrap my head around larian studios leaving baldur's gate 3 ๐Ÿคฏ, i mean i get it, they must've been feeling burnt out or something, but still it hurts ๐Ÿ˜”. the timing is weird tho, like wizards of coast needed a break from their open gaming license and now larian gets to move on to other projects ๐Ÿ’ผ. personally, i think this adaptation might be a good thing for the franchise? like, it's gonna give fans some closure and allow them to process their emotions before HBO makes its own moves ๐Ÿ“บ. can't wait to see how this all plays out! ๐Ÿค”

man that's so disppointing ๐Ÿค• larian studios had such a good rep for being all about engaging with the community... it's like they just burned out or something ๐Ÿ’” i get why wotc needed to step in but still it feels like we're losing some of that magic that made baldur's gate 3 so special ๐Ÿ”ฎ hopefully this hbo adaptation can find its own way and do justice to the franchise ๐Ÿคž

๐Ÿค” I'm still trying to wrap my head around the news that HBO's got a hold on Baldur's Gate. I mean, don't get me wrong, it's cool that they're adapting it into a show, but is it really necessary? ๐ŸŽฌ I've heard mixed things about Craig Mazin, and while The Last of Us was lit, I'm not sure if he's the right guy for this gig. And what about the game itself? It seemed like Larian Studios had done something special with Baldur's Gate 3... now it feels like they're just abandoning ship ๐Ÿšข. I know some fans are hyped about the adaptation, but others seem super bummed out ๐Ÿ˜”. Guess only time will tell if this show turns out to be good or not

man I'm so torn about this... on one hand I'm hyped that a new adaptation is coming through ๐Ÿคฉ but at the same time I feel bad for Larian Studios, they've built such a loyal fanbase with Baldur's Gate 3 and it's crazy that they had to leave ๐Ÿค• especially since they were doing things right by engaging with their community, it feels like HBO just swooped in and took control away from them ๐Ÿšซ. I'm also kinda curious about what the showrunners are gonna do with the property, Craig Mazin is known for his dark stuff so that's definitely a risk ๐ŸŽƒ but hey, it's all good for Larian to move on to new projects, Divinity: Original Sin 2 has been a banger ๐Ÿ‘Š. can't wait to see how this whole thing plays out ๐Ÿ“บ

I'm low-key disappointed that Larian left BG3, I mean they had a great track record with Divinity: Original Sin 2 ๐Ÿ’”๐Ÿ‘€ But at the same time, I get why they wanted to move on, it's a lot of pressure being the owners of D&D ๐Ÿคฏ And I gotta give props to Craig Mazin for taking on this project, he's got some big shoes to fill ๐Ÿ‘ž This adaptation might just bring in some new life to the franchise ๐ŸŒˆ

omg u no how i feel about larian studios leavin baldur's gate 3 behind ๐Ÿค” lol they were doin it rite by engagin w/ ther fans thru memes sales n all dat stuff but wen they left it was like "ok" n now hbo is gonna try n make it into a show ๐Ÿ˜ idk bout this tho ๐ŸŽฅ if it turns out 2 b good i'll b down n watch it lol but larian needs 2 focus on divinity: original sin 2 rn that game is lit ๐Ÿ”ฅ๐Ÿ‘€

๐Ÿค” I'm kinda disappointed that Larian Studios left Baldur's Gate 3, they seemed really passionate about it and had a strong connection with the fans ๐Ÿค—. But at the same time, I get why they wanted to move on - it sounds like HBO is bringing in some big names and Larian needs to focus on other projects ๐Ÿ’ก. The Last of Us has set the bar pretty high for them, after all! ๐Ÿ˜Š What do you guys think? Will HBO's adaptation be able to live up to our expectations? ๐Ÿค”
