What to know about the NYPD commissioner Mamdani, Cuomo and Sliwa all say they’d keep

Mamdani, Cuomo, Sliwa Agree on Keeping NYPD Commissioner Amid Controversy Surrounding Police Enforcement.

New York City mayoral candidates have found common ground in their support for retaining NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch. Zohran Mamdani, Andrew Cuomo, and Curtis Sliwa all expressed a willingness to keep Tisch at the helm of the department, despite her first year being marked by controversy surrounding police enforcement.

Tisch, 44, has faced criticism from some Democrats for her focus on policing low-level crimes across the city. Critics argue that this strategy disproportionately affects marginalized communities and pushes more people through the criminal justice system. Others have expressed concern over her handling of high-profile cases, including a recent shooting in which an unarmed man was killed during a traffic stop.

However, Tisch's tenure has also seen significant improvements in crime statistics, with many shootings and homicides reaching historic lows under her watch. Law enforcement experts credit Tisch for rooting out corruption within the department and implementing measures to improve quality of life enforcement.

The new commissioner's approach has sparked praise from some city lawmakers and media pundits but criticism from progressive voters and criminal justice reform advocates. Despite this, Tisch remains a popular figure among many New Yorkers, with former NYPD detective Kirk Burkhalter describing her as having "put out the dumpster fire" that plagued the department under Adams' leadership.

Tisch's efforts to stabilize a troubled department have been widely praised by experts. She has taken steps to overhaul the department, including ordering hundreds of officers back to assigned posts after determining they had been improperly transferred. Tisch has also made moves to discipline officers found guilty of wrongdoing at a higher rate than her predecessors.

However, some critics remain skeptical about the effectiveness of these efforts and argue that Tisch's decisions on high-profile cases, such as the shooting in which Allan Feliz was killed during a traffic stop, have raised questions about accountability.

idk what's more frustrating, the fact that nyc is still struggling with police reform or that ppl are only now realizing how messed up the system is 😒. like, we've been talking about this stuff for years and it seems like no one's taking actual action. i mean, tisch is trying to make changes, but until the politicians and city lawmakers start listening and making real shifts in policy, nothing's gonna change 🚫. and let's be real, if you're not willing to confront your own biases and privilege, then how can you even hope to fix this? 🤷‍♂️

OMG 🤯 u guys, I'm like, totally telling u here... this is so suspicious 🤑 how all these mayoral candidates are just agreeing on keeping Tisch as commissioner, despite her record being pretty shady 😏. it's like, they're all trying to silence the truth or something 🤐. I mean, don't get me wrong, crime stats are low and all, but that's not really saying anything about the effectiveness of her policies or even if she's doing what's best for this city 🤔. what's really going on here?

🤔 I think it's really interesting to see how Mamdani, Cuomo, and Sliwa are all downplaying the controversy surrounding Tisch's policing strategy. While it's true that her focus on low-level crimes has been criticized by some, I believe that her efforts to improve quality of life enforcement have made a tangible difference in reducing crime rates 📉. The fact that she's taken steps to root out corruption and discipline officers found guilty of wrongdoing is also a major plus 👮‍♀️. However, I do think it's worth keeping an eye on how Tisch handles high-profile cases like the recent shooting, as accountability is crucial in policing ⚠️. Overall, I'm cautiously optimistic about Tisch's ability to lead the NYPD forward and create positive change 🔄.

🤔 I'm loving this development - having a commissioner who can bring stability to the NYPD is just what New York City needs! 🗽️ Tisch seems like she's doing some solid work, like rooting out corruption and focusing on quality of life enforcement. It's interesting that some critics are saying she's not addressing high-profile cases effectively, but I think it's great that she's taking a proactive approach to discipline officers who've been found guilty of wrongdoing.

I'm also loving the fact that Cuomo, Mamdani, and Sliwa can agree on something for once! 😂 It just goes to show that even with differing views, they all seem to be thinking about what's best for the city. And let's be real, those crime stats are looking pretty great under Tisch's watch - it's clear she's making a difference.

I'm not sure what the future holds, but I think this is a positive step forward for the NYPD and the city as a whole. Fingers crossed that Tisch can keep building on her momentum! 👍

awww yay!!! i'm so relieved to hear that mamdani, cuomo, and sliwa agree on keeping commissioner tisch 🤞💪 she's doing such a great job trying to clean up the NYPD and make it safer for everyone! 🌟 i know some people have concerns about her approach, but from what i've seen, she's really making a difference 💯 like that comment from Kirk Burkhalter - "put out the dumpster fire" is exactly what she did! 🚮👏

I think it's kinda weird that all 3 candidates agreed to keep the NYPD Commissioner despite all the controversy 🤔💡. I mean, don't get me wrong, crime stats are looking up and all, but policing low-level crimes disproportionately affects marginalized communities 🌎. Can't we have a more nuanced approach? It feels like we're just sweeping problems under the rug without addressing the root causes 🧹.

omg, u gotta think, like, what's really goin' on here? 🤔 all these mayoral candidates agreein on keepin Tisch at the helm of NYPD? that's weird, right? i mean, she's been gettin all this flak from progressive voters and CJ reform advocates, but suddenly they're all on board with her? i don't buy it. maybe it's a power move or somethin... like, what if Tisch is just playin' both sides to keep everyone happy? 🤑 we gotta keep an eye on this one, folks...

I think its weird how they all agree to keep her as commissioner 🤔👮‍♀️. I mean, she's still got a lot of controversy surroundin' her, but at the same time, crime rates are way down and some folks say she's tryin' to clean up the department... but others think shes makin' things worse for low-level crimes 🚔💸. And whats with all the high-profile cases? I dunno about this traffic stop thingy that went down where some guy got killed 🚗😬. Can't we just have a commissioner who's all about community policing and stuff like that?
