Teen facing reckless homicide charges in 2024 Bronzeville DUI crash that killed 2

Teen's Life Hangs in Balance as Reckless DUI Crash Claims Two Lives in Bronzeville

A 19-year-old Chicago resident, Erick Garcia-Ambriz, is facing an uncertain future after being accused of killing two people in a gruesome crash involving drunk driving. The incident occurred on October 14, 2024, in the Bronzeville neighborhood when Garcia-Ambriz's black Infiniti Q50 collided with a silver Chevrolet at a red light.

The force of the impact was devastating, causing the Chevrolet to flip onto a sidewalk and land near the front doors of police headquarters. The two occupants of the vehicle, Kalieb Ghebreyesus, 45, from Des Plaines, and Shanika Smith, 45, from Chicago, were left unconscious with massive side-impact damage.

Ghebreyesus was pronounced dead at 1:46 a.m. after being taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center, while Smith succumbed to her injuries at 1:51 a.m. at the same hospital. The cause of death for both victims is still pending investigation.

Garcia-Ambriz, who was driving under the influence with a blood-alcohol content of 0.124%, above the legal limit, was arrested near his home on Tuesday. He now faces two counts of reckless homicide and two misdemeanor charges of aggravated DUI.

The teen's case will come before a judge on Wednesday for a pretrial detention hearing, where he may face additional charges or penalties if convicted. The incident has left the community shaken, with many calling for stricter enforcement of drunk driving laws to prevent such tragedies in the future.

Garcia-Ambriz's life is now hanging in the balance as his fate is decided by the court. His actions on that fateful night have put the lives of two innocent people at risk, and it remains to be seen how he will face justice for his reckless behavior behind the wheel.

I'm really sad about this incident πŸ˜”. It's just so senseless when you think about a young person like Erick Garcia-Ambriz, who was barely 19, making such reckless decisions that ended up taking two lives. You know, it's not just about the DUI charge, it's about how he chose to drink and drive in the first place. And now, his future is looking pretty uncertain πŸ€”. I'm all for second chances, but this is a huge wake-up call for him and the community to take drunk driving seriously and get their lives checked regularly. It's just not worth risking someone's life like that 🚫.

πŸ€” this story is all over the news and im still wondering where did the blood-alcohol content come from 0.124%? was there a breathalyzer test or some kinda field sobriety test? also, why didnt he get a DUB (driver under suspension) instead of just being pulled over? what kinda deal did his parents make with the cops to let him go this far? πŸš—πŸ˜¬

πŸ€” this is really sad stuff... i feel bad for erick's family, but like i don't think it's fair to just lock him up without giving him a chance to explain himself? maybe he had something that led him to drive drunk on that night? idk if his blood-alcohol content was super high or not, but accidents can happen to anyone. and what about the community coming together for stricter enforcement of laws instead of just focusing on punishing one person? it feels like we're more worried about punishing a teen than actually finding ways to prevent this kind of stuff from happening in the future...

Idk about this dude Erick Garcia-Ambriz... I mean, I'm literally thinking one minute he's a free teenager living life, driving around, partying, etc... 🀯 And then suddenly he's like, 2 lives away from death because of his own stupidity? 😱 What's the deal with that?! πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ

But on the other hand, I'm also thinking that maybe Erick was having a bad night, maybe there were some life issues going on, and he just snapped? ⚠️ Like, we don't know all the facts about this guy, you know? πŸ˜• We can't just judge him based on one crazy mistake.

And at the same time... I'm also thinking that Erick should've known better! πŸ™„ Drunk driving is like, super obvious no-go, right? πŸ˜‚ You gotta think about those around you, and he just put 2 innocent lives in danger. That's not okay, dude! 🚫

Ugh, my brain is all messed up now... 😴 Can't decide what to think about this whole thing...

omg this is crazy 😱 19 yrs old and he's already facing life in prison? i mean yeah we gotta punish people for DUI but this seems harsh πŸ€” what if he gets treatment and shows he can be responsible? shouldn't we try rehabilitation over jail time? πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ also how do we prevent other teens from making the same mistakes? more education and awareness maybe? πŸ“š or is it just a case of "what could've been" now that 2 lives are lost πŸ™

Man this is so crazy Erick was just a teenager trying to live life, now his whole future is being decided by one stupid night 🀯. I mean can't we do better than that? We need to make sure these kids know that drinking and driving is not worth risking lives. It's like, what's the point of even having a license if you're just gonna use it to kill people? πŸ˜•

I'm also thinking about Kalieb and Shanika, they had families and friends who loved them... now they're just memories πŸ’”. We need to make sure that their deaths aren't in vain, we need to change the system so that something like this never happens again.

We should be focusing on rehabilitation programs for kids who get into accidents like this, not just throwing the book at them. I mean, do you think Erick was even thinking straight when he got behind the wheel? πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ

I'm all for stricter enforcement of drunk driving laws, but we need to go further than that. We need to educate kids from a young age about the dangers of drinking and driving... it's like, common sense 😴.

It's gonna be interesting to see how this plays out in court, I hope Erick gets some serious time behind bars πŸ’―.

πŸ€• this is just devastating... 19 years old and he's facing a lifetime with 2 lives lost because of his reckless driving 😒. I feel so bad for his family and friends who must be going through an unimaginable grief right now πŸ€•. The fact that he was driving drunk is just insane, with a BAC of .124%... how did this happen? πŸ™„ and to think that there are people out there fighting for stricter laws to prevent this kind of tragedy from happening again πŸ‘Š. Let's hope justice is served and he faces the consequences of his actions πŸ’―

omg you guys i just had the craziest dream last night lol anyway did u know that the new season of your favorite show is coming out soon?! 🀩 i've been waiting for ages and i'm so hyped! but anyway back to the news... i don't know about this dude's life hanging in balance tho like isn't he gonna get some help or somethin? πŸ€” i mean drunks behind the wheel are no joke but we gotta think about what led him there, right? was it peer pressure or did he just lose control for a sec? and btw has anyone tried that new iced coffee at starbucks?! πŸ˜‚

this is just heartbreaking 😩... you gotta wonder what Erick was thinking driving with a b.a.c. of 0.124%... two families now dealing with the loss of their loved ones... πŸ€• i'm not saying Erick deserves to die in prison, but seriously two counts of reckless homicide? that's harsh... and what about the additional charges if he gets convicted? it's gonna be a tough road ahead for him...

OMG, this is so sad πŸ€•... can't believe a 19-yr-old's life is literally hanging in the balance over this DUI crash 😱. Like, what was he even thinking?! He got caught with a blood-alcohol level way above the limit and now two innocent people are dead πŸ’”. And to make matters worse, his future looks super uncertain 🀞... I mean, 2 counts of reckless homicide? That's some serious jail time 🚫. Community is right to be calling for stricter enforcement on drunk driving laws - this is just unacceptable 😑. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that the judge makes a tough decision and Garcia-Ambriz faces justice πŸ’―.

OH MY GOSH, THIS CASE IS SO HEARTBREAKING!!! 😱 ERICK GARCIA-AMBRIZ'S ACTIONS THAT NIGHT WERE JUST SO CARELESS AND RECKLESS!!!! πŸš—πŸ’₯ IF HE WAS DRIVING WITH A BAC OF 0.124%, HOW MANY OTHER LIVES COULD HAVE BEEN PUT AT RISK????? THE FACT THAT TWO INNOCENT PEOPLE LOST THEIR LIVES IS JUST TRAGIC!!!! 😭 I HOPE THE JUDGE IS STRONG AND HANDS DOWN THE HARSHEST SENTENCE POSSIBLE FOR THIS CRIME!!!! πŸ’ͺ

omg what a nightmare this guy's life is gonna be like now 😱🚨 u can't even imagine driving drunk and killing ppl lol not on ur life πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ the fact that hes underage makes it worst 19 yrs old already dealing with this kinda trouble πŸ™…β€β™‚οΈ hopefully he gets some serious time for his reckless behavior cuz two innocent lives lost is too much πŸ˜”

omg I'm literally shaking thinking about this 😱 like what's going through his head when he was driving drunk? and his BAC is like 0.124%?! that's insane 🀯 I don't know if I could ever live with myself if I were in his shoes... anyway, I feel so bad for Kalieb and Shanika's families 😭 their loss is just devastating... it's crazy how one reckless decision can change someone's life forever πŸ’” I hope he gets the help he needs or else he'll be locked up for a looong time 🚫

😱 oh my god this guy is so lucky to even be alive after what he did πŸ™ 2 ppl are gone and they're gonna have to live with that pain for the rest of their lives 😭 his blood alcohol content was over double the limit like what were they thinking? 🀯 he's basically gonna get away with a slap on the wrist if he gets off scot-free but we all know thats not how justice works πŸ’” this case is so messed up and i just wanna shake his parents and tell them their kid needs to take responsibility for his actions πŸ‘΄πŸ»πŸ’ͺ

This whole thing is so devastating πŸ˜”. I mean, can you imagine being 19 and facing a life sentence just because one bad decision? 🀯 It's just not right, you know? We gotta take care of our teens, give 'em chances to make mistakes without ending up in a life-altering situation like this.

Drunk driving laws are already pretty strict, so I don't think we need to go too crazy with new rules... unless there's some way to educate the community more about the risks involved πŸ€”. We gotta spread awareness and encourage responsible behavior behind the wheel.

It's not all on Garcia-Ambriz's shoulders, though - we have to consider his family situation too. Is he even old enough to be driving in the first place? Did anyone supervise him that night? It's a messy issue with no clear answers...
