Syrian refugee elected mayor of German town, years after fleeing war | CNN

A 29-year-old Syrian refugee, Ryyan Alshebl, made history in the southwestern German state of Baden-Württemberg by winning a mayoral election in the municipality of Ostelsheim. Eight years after fleeing war-torn Syria, Alshebl secured 55.41% of the votes, defeating two German candidates and marking a significant victory for his community.

The outgoing mayor congratulated Alshebl on his win, wishing him good luck while also expressing support for the newcomer's campaign. The town's residents cheered for their new leader, hailing his election as a "fairy tale come true." Local politician Marco Strauss acknowledged that he wished Alshebl success and asked for support for both their shared Ostelsheim.

The state's Integration Minister Manne Lucha saw Alshebl's victory as an opportunity to promote diversity in Germany. He called on the newcomer to continue encouraging other people with a migration history to pursue public office, hoping his election would send a positive message about embracing differences.

However, not everyone welcomed Alshebl with open arms. During the campaign trail, he received hateful comments from some far-right fringe voters who opposed him due to his Syrian roots. Despite these negative reactions, Alshebl reported that most residents were supportive of his platform.

Born into a family of schoolteachers and agricultural engineers in Syria, Alshebl described his pre-war life as carefree until the age of 20. At that time, protests against the Syrian government turned violent, leading to war and eventually forcing him to flee with hundreds of thousands of others. He crossed from Turkey to Greece before arriving in Germany.

In Germany, Alshebl experienced firsthand the challenges faced by asylum seekers. With the country's open-door policy having taken a toll on German society, he made a conscious effort to invest in his own future and eventually found work in local administration. After seven years, he decided it was time to run for office, making digital access to public services one of his priorities as well as climate protection.

Alshebl has been a member of the Green Party since arriving in Germany and now holds German citizenship. His election pledge included relocating to Ostelsheim once elected as mayor. Despite facing adversity, Alshebl persevered, drawing from his experiences to create policies that cater to the needs of all residents.

🤩 this is so cool! i mean, think about it, 8 years ago he was like, running away from war in syria and now look at him, mayor of ostelsheim? 🙌 it's inspiring to see how far he's come and the impact he's making on his community. i'm glad to hear that most residents supported his platform, especially since some people were being pretty hateful towards him during the campaign 🤕. but hey, being in public office can be tough, so props to ryyan for persevering and using his experiences to create policies that benefit everyone. anyway, i think it's awesome that he's from a family of schoolteachers and agricultural engineers, who knew? 😊

I'm so stoked to see Ryyan Alshebl making history in Germany 🙌! As a Syrian refugee who's been through so much, it's amazing to see him rise above the noise and become a leader in his community ❤️. I think it's awesome that he's using his experiences to create policies that benefit everyone, not just himself 👍. His story is truly an inspiration, and I hope it encourages more people with migration backgrounds to get involved in public office 🌟. Of course, there are some haters out there who don't want to see diversity represented in leadership roles 😒, but let's be real, that's not gonna hold Ryyan back 💪. I'm sending all my best vibes to him and the people of Ostelsheim 👏. Can we please celebrate this win with open arms 🎉?

🤔 I'm telling you, something's off about this whole story. A 29-yr-old Syrian refugee becoming mayor in a German town? It sounds too good to be true 🤑. What's really going on here? Is this just a clever ploy to further the integration of refugees into German society, or is there more to it? I mean, think about it, the far-right fringe voters who opposed him... that's some convenient opposition 💁‍♀️. And what's with all these positive comments from the locals? It's like they're trying to make a point 📝. I'm not saying Alshebl isn't a great guy and all, but I'm keeping an eye on this one 👀. There might be more to his victory than meets the eye...

Wow 😊 this is so cool! I mean, a Syrian refugee winning a mayoral election in Germany? That's like, super inspiring and stuff 🤩. As someone who's been following this story, it's amazing to see how he's risen above the negativity and focused on making Ostelsheim an even better place for all residents. His commitment to creating digital access to public services and climate protection is super relatable 🤩. I'm curious to see how he'll implement his policies and if Germany will continue to be a welcoming country for refugees like Ryyan 👏

I think it's just amazing to see Ryyan Alshebl making a real difference in his community 🙌. Winning a mayoral election at 29 is no small feat, and I'm sure he must be over the moon about it 😊. What's even more impressive is that he came from such a challenging background – fleeing war and all – but still managed to channel his experiences into creating policies that benefit everyone 🤝.

I also love how the community rallied around him, despite some people being skeptical or even hateful 💔. It just goes to show that when we take the time to listen and understand each other's perspectives, we can build something truly special 👫.

As someone who's lived a pretty comfortable life, I have to say that Alshebl's election has given me a lot to think about 🤓. We need more people like him in positions of power – people who are willing to listen and work towards creating positive change 💡.

omg I cant even believe this guy won 🤯🇩🇪 he's like a superhero for syrian refugees in germany! 8 years ago he had to leave his home country because of war and now he's mayor? that's insane! I'm glad the german people are so open-minded and welcoming. it shows that germany is really embracing diversity 🌎💚 but at the same time, I'm also kinda annoyed by those far-right fringe voters who couldn't just keep their opinions to themselves 🙄 they're like the worst, always trying to stir up drama. anyway, congrats to ryyan alshebl and all his supporters! this is def a fairy tale come true 😊

I gotta say, this is insane! A Syrian refugee becoming the mayor of a German town? That's like something out of a movie 🤯🇩🇪 I mean, Ryyan Alshebl's story is so inspiring, he really is living proof that with hard work and determination, anything is possible. And to see him being accepted by the community and supported by politicians is just amazing 💕

I think it's also super cool that he's bringing a fresh perspective to the role of mayor, with his experience as an asylum seeker and his background in environmental issues. It's all about embracing diversity and inclusivity, right? 🌎💚 And who knows, maybe this will be the start of something big – more people from different backgrounds running for office and making a real difference.

Of course, there were some haters out there who didn't take too kindly to Alshebl's win, but that just goes to show how much progress we still have to make. But hey, at least it's nice to see someone being celebrated for their achievements, rather than tearing them down 😊

OMG, like, this is SO inspiring! 🤩 Ryyan Alshebl's win is literally a dream come true for Syrian refugees in Germany! I mean, 8 yrs after fleeing war-torn Syria and now he's the mayor 😲 It just goes to show that with hard work and determination, u can achieve anything! 👏 He's an amazing role model and I'm loving how his platform focuses on digital access to public services and climate protection 🌎❤️. And btw, it's great to see the outgoing mayor & other local politicians coming together to support Ryyan's win 🤝💪. I'm sending lots of good vibes to Ryyan for his future as mayor 🌟

idk if its fairytale come true or not lol... i mean Ryyan Alshebl is making history but like whats with the hate comments from some far-right voters? cant they just keep it civil? 🤔 and what about the 55.41% vote margin? is that even normal for a local election? need to see more info on how many people actually voted...

I think it's super cool that Ryyan Alshebl won the mayoral election in Ostelsheim, right? I mean, who wouldn't want a Syrian refugee as their mayor, haha! 🤣 But seriously, it's amazing how he overcame so much adversity to achieve this goal. However, I'm not sure if it's entirely fair to say that his community was welcoming of him. I mean, some people did send him hateful comments online... 🚫 which is just plain rude. On the other hand, I think it's awesome that his campaign got a lot of support from local residents who were interested in his platform. I'm not sure if digital access to public services is actually that big of a deal, though... 💻 I mean, can't we just use our smartphones or something? 📱

🙏 he's an inspiration, reminds us we gotta keep pushing for change & representation 🌎 especially when people feel like they don't belong in their new communities. 29 yrs old & already making history 💪 it shows you can be a leader even with everything against you... just got to keep your head down & stay true to yourself 🤝

man this is so inspiring 🙌, i mean ryyan alshebl's story is a perfect example of how resilience and determination can take you places 💪. coming from war-torn syria to becoming a mayor in germany is like winning the ultimate comeback story 🏆. what's even more remarkable is that he didn't let the negativity get him down, instead he used it as fuel to keep pushing forward 🔥.

it's also a testament to how powerful community support can be 💕. ryyan had people from his community cheering him on and voting for him, which shows that we're all stronger together 🤝. plus, his platform of digital access to public services and climate protection is so needed in today's world 🌎.

anyway, this guy's win is a reminder that with hard work and perseverance, we can overcome even the toughest obstacles and achieve our dreams 💫. let's all draw some inspiration from ryyan alshebl's journey and strive to make a positive impact in our own communities 🌟

OMG, can't believe this is a thing 😲! Ryyan Alshebl's win is literally a power move for the community 🤝. I mean, he went from being an asylum seeker to becoming the mayor of Ostelsheim in just 8 years? That's insane 💥. And to think he faced hate comments during his campaign, but still managed to win with 55.41% of the votes 😊. It's like he proved everyone wrong and showed that even the underdog can make a difference 🦸‍♂️.

I love how the state's Integration Minister is all about promoting diversity and embracing differences 💖. It's about time we celebrate our differences instead of trying to hide them or suppress them 🙅‍♂️. And I'm so glad Alshebl made digital access to public services one of his priorities 📊. That's the kind of innovation we need in Germany!

Anyway, congrats to Ryyan Alshebl on his historic win 🎉! Can't wait to see what he does next 🤔.

OMG u guys r gonna lose it!! 🤯 so a syrian refugee wins mayoral election in germany after 8 yrs & everyone's over here cheering 🎉🇩🇪 its literally a fairy tale come true!!! but on a more serious note idk about ppl sayin he got in cuz of his roots hes worked hard to get where he is, invested in his future, and made digital access public services one of his foci 🔒💻 he deserves that win & more!!! btw why did ppl think he wasnt qualified? 🤔 did they not see all the good he's done for his community?!

🤩 Can't believe a Syrian refugee won a mayoral election in Germany! Eight years after fleeing war-torn Syria and having it tough as an asylum seeker, Ryyan Alshebl makes history in Ostelsheim. His campaign was all about promoting digital access to public services and climate protection - so refreshing to see someone like him taking charge. I mean, who wouldn't want a fresh perspective from someone who's been through the struggles of war and persecution? 🙌 The town's residents must be over the moon with excitement. As for the haters on social media, sorry not sorry - your negativity can't bring down someone with Ryyan's determination & vision! 💪

🤷‍♀️ I mean, wow, 55.41% is pretty impressive for a first-time candidate... I guess it's great that he was able to connect with the community and win over enough votes to make a difference. 👍 Still, can't help but wonder what kind of "fairy tale come true" story this is, considering he had to escape war and all that drama just to pursue politics 🤔. Anyway, it's good to see more people from diverse backgrounds getting involved in public office - maybe we'll get a more interesting debate going 💬.

😊 I'm loving this! A Syrian refugee making history in a small German town? That's what I call progress! 🌟 Ryyan Alshebl's story is truly inspiring - from fleeing war-torn Syria to becoming a mayor at 29? Mind blown! 👏 He's proof that with hard work and determination, anyone can make a difference. It's awesome to see the German people embracing diversity and supporting his campaign. 🌈 I'm not surprised he got some hate comments from far-right fringe voters, but it just shows how passionate they are about their opinions 😤. Anyway, congrats to Ryyan on this incredible achievement! 👍 He's definitely someone to watch out for in the world of politics.

🤔 I'm totally stoked for Ryyan Alshebl's historic win 🎉, but can we talk about how some people reacted to him during the campaign? Like, I get it, there are still some far-right folks out there who don't want diversity in their town, but shouldn't they be ashamed of themselves? 😡

On a more positive note, Alshebl's win is proof that everyone deserves a chance to make a difference 🌟. As a Syrian refugee, he's already had to face so much hardship and adversity, but he still managed to become the mayor of his community 👏.

I also love how he's using his platform to promote digital access to public services and climate protection 💻. It's about time we start prioritizing these issues, especially in a town like Ostelsheim that's already taken steps towards sustainability 🌿.

Let's keep celebrating this win and supporting newcomers who are making a difference in our communities 🎊. We can always improve and learn from each other 🤝.
