South Korea's former First Lady, Kim Keon Hee, has been sentenced to a one year and eight months prison term after being found guilty of accepting bribes from the Unification Church, according to South Korea's official news agency, Yonhap. The Seoul Central District Court cleared her of two other charges: stock price manipulation and violating the political funds act.
The court ruled that Kim had accepted at least $200,000 in bribes and gifts from businesses and politicians, including valuables such as a Chanel handbag and a diamond necklace from the Unification Church. Prosecutors have accused Kim and the church of colluding to undermine the separation of religion and state, which is constitutionally mandated.
The prosecution team has also indicted Unification Church leader Han Hak-ja, who is currently on trial, in connection with the gifts given to Kim. The former First Lady had denied all charges, claiming they were "deeply unjust," but also apologized for causing trouble despite being a person of no importance.
Kim's husband, Yoon Suk Yeol, was ousted from office last year and has been sentenced to five years in prison for actions related to his declaration of martial law in December 2024. Yoon is now facing the possibility of the death penalty in a separate case.
The scandal surrounding Kim and her husband contributed to a dismal approval rating for Yoon's party, which failed to win back a parliamentary majority in general elections in April 2024. The scandal also led to the President vetoing several opposition-backed bills, including one related to investigating allegations against Kim.
Kim's sentencing comes days after former Prime Minister Han Duck-soo was sentenced to 23 years in prison for aiding and abetting Yoon's suspension of civilian rule.
