South Africa lets 153 Palestinians disembark following 12-hour plane ordeal

South Africa Relents After 12-Hour Ordeal for Palestinian Passengers

In a surprise move, the South African government has finally allowed over 150 Palestinian airline passengers to disembark after they were held on a plane for nearly 12 hours by border police. The chartered flight, operated by Global Airways and bound for Kenya, was originally set to land in Johannesburg but faced an unexpected delay when authorities discovered that the passengers did not have the customary departure stamps in their passports.

The situation sparked outrage among South Africans, who are known for their strong support of the Palestinian cause. News of the ordeal reached a fever pitch on social media, with many condemning the government's actions as "outrageous" and "unjust".

According to reports, the passengers were initially denied entry due to the lack of stamps in their passports and failure to indicate how long they planned to stay in South Africa or where they would be staying. However, after a humanitarian organization, Gift of the Givers, stepped in to guarantee the passengers' accommodation during their stay, the authorities reversed course.

The news came as a relief to some 130 Palestinians who ultimately entered the country and 23 others were transferred to other destinations from the airport. The first plane carrying 176 Palestinians had landed in Johannesburg on October 28, with some of its passengers departing for other countries without being stamped.

Imtiaz Sooliman, founder of Gift of the Givers, condemned Israel's alleged actions, stating that "they are removing people from Gaza and sending them on chartered planes" without stamping their passports. He claimed that these actions amount to "exacerbating their suffering in a foreign country".

Nigel Branken, a South African social worker who assisted those held on the plane, corroborated Sooliman's claims, stating that the passengers had been ordered by Israeli authorities to leave all their belongings behind before boarding an unmarked plane at an Israeli air force base.

The episode has reignited calls for greater accountability from Israel and its international community. As one observer noted, "this operation is a classic example of how countries can be complicit in human rights abuses when they fail to act in the face of clear evidence".

just saw this news and I'm totally shook 😱... i mean, holding people on a plane for 12 hours without stamps is insane! what kind of system allows that? it's like they're playing with people's lives 🀯. and to make matters worse, the passengers were basically forced to leave their belongings behind... that's just cruel πŸ’”. I'm glad Gift of the Givers stepped in and helped facilitate their entry into South Africa, but this whole ordeal is a huge red flag 🚨. it raises so many questions about accountability and human rights... we need to be holding governments accountable for their actions πŸ’ͺ.

This is just soooo crazy what happened with those 150 Palestinians being held on that plane for 12 hours 🀯 I mean, come on! They were basically stuck at an airport without any idea how long they could stay or where they would be living. It's a miracle someone stepped in to help them out with the Gift of the Givers organization. And honestly, it's just not cool that Israeli authorities are doing this to people who are already going through so much struggling in Gaza.

It's also interesting to see how South Africa came together to stand up for these passengers and demand some answers from the government 🀝 I mean, if you're gonna stop someone from entering a country, make sure they have all their paperwork in order, right? And what's with the lack of departure stamps in their passports? That just seems like a whole lot of unnecessary hassle.

The fact that this whole ordeal was sparked on social media and people were calling out the government for being unfair is pretty telling πŸ“± I mean, it shows how quickly awareness can spread and how much public opinion can shift when something's not right.

omg this is crazy 😱 what's going on with the world right now? so south africa just relented after holding these palestinian passengers for 12 hours... like, i get it they were confused about their passports but come on πŸ™„ and then gift of the givers comes in and saves the day πŸ™ i'm so relieved that those 130 people got to enter the country safely πŸ’• but can we talk about how israel just doing this stuff without consequences? πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ i mean, what's the deal with these chartered planes and no stamps on passports? it sounds like a recipe for human rights abuses πŸ‘€

omg u cant believe whats goin on here!! south africa was holding these palestinian ppl for 12hrs because they didnt have stamps in their passports lol what kinda border control is this?? the gov actually relented after a humanitarian org stepped in to help them out its so unfair that ppl r gettin held up like this its like, basic human rights stuff 🀯 anyways i think its a super bad look for south africa and also for israel whats goin on over there?? seems like they r doin some kinda shady stuff

πŸ€” this is what happens when 'help' is just a cover for complicity 🚫 150 people stuck on a plane for 12 hours because of a minor issue that's not their fault. South Africans should be mad at their gov't for being so quick to follow orders from another country without questioning the morality of it all πŸ’Έ

lol wht r ppl thinkin? south africa just relented after 12 hrs on a plane with no passport stamps lol. i mean, i get it, ppl r passionate bout palestine & all but come on gov, gotta follow rules πŸ™„. didnt expect the gift of givers to swoop in & save the day tho 🀝. nigel brinken said they were forced 2 leave their stuff behind @ an israeli air base...like, wut? seems like israel's doin some shady stuff here 🚫. anywayz, glad those ppl made it out safe & sound πŸ’•. should def be askin more questions bout this whole thing tho πŸ‘€

omg I'm so glad this ordeal is finally over πŸ˜ŠπŸ™Œ 150+ ppl stuck on a plane for 12 hrs is literally crazy talk! 🀯 The fact that it took a humanitarian org like Gift of the Givers to step in and make things right is just amazing πŸ’• imtiaz sooliman's statements about israel's actions are super concerning, but at least they got those ppl safely into south africa now πŸ™ let's keep calling out human rights abuses and supporting those who need help ❀️

A 12-hour ordeal for 150 Palestinians? That's just ridiculous! GIF: An airplane taking off with a red X marked through it ✘

South Africans are known for their strong support of the Palestinian cause, and it's great to see them standing up for human rights. πŸ‘ GIF: A group of people holding signs that say "Free Palestine" πŸ“£

The situation has indeed reignited calls for greater accountability from Israel and its international community. But it's not just about holding one country accountable, it's also about supporting those who are being oppressed. The fact that the passengers were denied entry due to lack of stamps and failed to indicate their stay duration is just ridiculous. GIF: A passport with a big X marked through it 🚫

🚫 This is totally unacceptable! The government's move was not only unfair but also shows a lack of empathy towards people in distress. I mean, come on! These Palestinians were already going through so much back home and then to be held up by bureaucratic red tape? It's just ridiculous!

And don't even get me started on the Israel thing. If they're really doing this to people trying to escape their situation, it's like, what's next? Are we gonna start rounding up people from other countries too? It raises so many questions about accountability and where our values stand.

As a society, we need to be holding these governments accountable for such actions. It's not just about the Palestinians; it's about human rights in general. We can't just sit back and watch while people are treated unfairly because of politics or national interests. That's not how we become better countries, folks! πŸ’ͺ

Just heard about this crazy situation in South Africa with those Palestinian passengers on a plane 🚫😱 and I'm like, totally blown away by the government's U-turn after 12 hours 😩. I mean, can you blame them for being outraged? The whole thing just smells fishy to me 🐟. Those passports without stamps were probably just a ploy to keep them out πŸ‘€. But what really gets my goat is that Israeli authorities are allegedly forcing people from Gaza into planes with no stamps 🚫. That's some serious human rights abuse right there! I'm glad Gift of the Givers stepped in to help, but it raises so many questions about accountability and international relations πŸ’”. We need more awareness and action on this stuff πŸ’ͺ.

I'm still shaking my head over this situation 🀯. I mean, 12 hours stuck on a plane? That's just crazy talk! The fact that the passengers were held up for so long without any explanation or support from the authorities is just appalling. And to think they had to leave all their belongings behind because of some Israeli "orders"... it's just a total mess.

And what really gets me is how this whole thing came down. A humanitarian org stepped in and suddenly everything was okay, but it's clear that something fishy went down here. The fact that the passengers didn't have those stupid stamps doesn't excuse what happened - it sounds like a convenient scapegoat to me.

It's just another example of how these kinds of issues can blow up on social media and get people really riled up... for good reason, tbh 😬

omg u guys i cant even believe wut happend with those palestinian passengers on that plane lol so many people were outraged online about it and i was like same tbh i mean who does that? 1st they dont let them off the plane cuz their passports dont have stamps and then they gotta beg some org to help them out so the gov can finally let them in 🀯 and its not just the gov thats bad tho israel is all shady for doing this to ppl its like they just removed them from gaza and sent them on a charter flight w/o any stamps lol whats next? πŸš«πŸ›«
