"No work, no school, no shopping": Minnesotans strike statewide against ICE despite arctic weather

In a defiant act, thousands of Minnesotans walked out on their jobs, skipped school, and refused to do their shopping, all in solidarity with protesters who are fighting against the growing presence of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operations in the state. The protest, dubbed "ICE Out of Minnesota: Day of Truth and Freedom," was marked by icy temperatures, with many marchers braving conditions that made it feel like -20 degrees Fahrenheit.

The demonstrations, which involved faith leaders, labor unions, and other civic organizations, came together to demand that ICE leave the state and launch an investigation into the killing of Renee Nicole Good. More than 200 businesses statewide have shut down for the day, with organizers predicting nearly 700 will follow suit in a "economic blackout."

The movement was led by UNIDOS Minnesota, an organizing group that called on people to march, boycott, and get trained as legal observers. Emilia Gonzรกlez Avalos, with UNIDOS Minnesota, told CNN that protesters would be willing to walk through the cold temperatures to make their point, saying "We're asking people to march... We're asking people to boycott today... We're asking people to get trained as legal observers."

The protests took place at various locations across the state, including a mile-long march in Minneapolis that was expected to start at 2 p.m. CST and end at the Target Center, where an indoor rally would continue. Meanwhile, protesters gathered outside an ICE facility at Fort Snelling in St. Paul, chanting anti-ICE slogans and waving signs calling for justice for Good.

Randi Weingarten, president of the American Federation of Teachers, was present at one of the protests, telling Salon that ICE's tactics have been about intimidation rather than immigration enforcement. "ICE is using more and more abusive tactics to try to provoke communities to erupt... so that the president can use more force and militarize American cities," Weingarten said.

The demonstrations were met with a mixed response from authorities, who described the protests as "beyond insane." Meanwhile, protesters referred to ICE officers as "criminal thugs" and called for an end to what they see as the Trump administration's aggressive policies towards immigrants.

As the protests continue, organizers are pushing for a more comprehensive investigation into the actions of ICE in Minnesota and the killing of Renee Nicole Good. The movement has sparked widespread attention and debate about immigration policy and police brutality, with many calling on lawmakers to take action against what they see as a government that is increasingly targeting marginalized communities.

I'm low-key impressed that people actually showed up to do something about this ICE situation in Minnesota ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ. I mean, braving -20 degrees Fahrenheit for the cause? That's dedication ๐Ÿ˜…. But let's not get it twisted, this is just another example of how far the government will go to keep their agenda going ๐Ÿ’ผ.

I'm also calling BS on those "leaders" saying they're fighting for justice and truth ๐Ÿ™„. It's all about optics at this point, getting attention for their own egos rather than actually making a real difference ๐Ÿ“ธ. And don't even get me started on the businesses shutting down โ€“ how long will it take them to realize they're just being punk'd by the protesters? ๐Ÿ’ธ

The fact that authorities are calling the protests "beyond insane" is just code for "we can't handle the truth" ๐Ÿ˜‚. Meanwhile, we're just supposed to sit back and let ICE continue their reign of terror without any accountability? No thanks ๐Ÿšซ. This whole thing reeks of desperation and opportunism.

I'm so hyped about this "ICE Out of Minnesota" thing ๐Ÿคฉ. Like, I get it, the situation is messed up, but some people are literally walking out on their lives for this cause ๐Ÿ’ช. It's not just about protesting, it's about taking a stand against something that's affecting your community, you know? And I love how the labor unions and faith leaders are coming together to make a difference - it's all about solidarity, fam! ๐Ÿค

But what really gets me is when people say ICE is using intimidation tactics... like, hello, isn't that what they're doing by showing up at people's jobs and homes in the first place? ๐Ÿ˜’ It's not just some random abuse of power, it's a systematic thing. And the fact that Randi Weingarten said as much makes me so proud to be part of this community ๐Ÿ’•.

And can we talk about how brave those marchers were braving -20 degree temps? ๐Ÿคฃ Like, I'd rather be drinking hot cocoa with marshmallows than protesting in the cold! But seriously, that takes a lot of guts. We need more people like them, you feel me? ๐Ÿ”ฅ

Umm i dont get why ppl have to walk out of their jobs for this... like cant u just call in sick or something? ๐Ÿค” And ice is being super bad and all, but like whats the point of all this economic blackout stuff? isnt it gonna hurt a lot of people who work at those businesses? ๐Ÿ˜• I feel bad for emilia gonzalez avalos and her team, they must be so cold walking around with no gloves ๐Ÿฅถ. And i heard randi weingarten say somethin about ice being all aggressive... but like whats the solution? ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ

๐Ÿ˜Š this is like totally amazing to see ppl stand up 4 whats right even if it means walkin out of their jobs or facin -20 temps. its all about demandin change & havin each other's backs, u feel me? ๐Ÿค i think its dope that faith leaders, labor unions, and civic orgs are comin together to fight 4 a common cause. we need more of this kind of unity & solidarity in our communities. ๐Ÿ’ช

Ugh, I'm so over these "economic blackouts" ๐Ÿ˜’. Can't people just go back to work after the protests are over? ๐Ÿคฏ 200+ businesses shutting down? That's gonna hurt a lot of small business owners and their families. And what's with all the chanting and signs? Can't they just have a calm conversation about the issues? ๐Ÿ™„ I get it, ICE is a problem, but do we need to take it to this extreme? ๐Ÿ˜• The whole thing just feels like a PR stunt to me...

omg I'm literally shook rn! these people are so brave I cant even imagine protesting in -20 degrees Fahrenheit lol ice out of minnesota for real tho I'm totally down to boycott some businesses and get trained as a legal observer we need more ppl to stand up against this ICE stuff it's so unfair Renee Nicole Good's family deserves justice and ppl r speaking truth to power ๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿฝ๐Ÿ’–

๐Ÿšซ๐Ÿ˜’ I gotta say, it's crazy how far people will go for what they believe in. Walking out of jobs, skipping school, and boycotting businesses all day? That's dedication ๐Ÿ’ช... or recklessness? Either way, the impact is real ๐Ÿ‘€. It'll be interesting to see if 700+ businesses actually shut down ๐Ÿค”. The message is clear: Minnesota isn't afraid of ICE. Now let's see how it plays out in the courts ๐Ÿš”.

OMG, can you even imagine walking out on your job in like -20 degrees?! ๐Ÿคฏ I'm all for showing support for the protesters, but bloody hell, those people are crazy! ๐Ÿ˜‚ I think it's kinda messed up how ICE is treating people, though. Those tactics are straight up intimidation, and it's not right. We should be supporting each other, not trying to scare people into submission. ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ The fact that the protesters were willing to march through freezing temps shows they're really passionate about this stuff. I just hope everyone stays safe, you know? ๐Ÿ™

I don't get why everyone's making such a big deal about this ICE protest... I mean, I think it's kinda cool that people are standing up for what they believe in, but -20 degrees Fahrenheit? That's just crazy! ๐Ÿคฃ And 200 businesses shutting down? That's gotta hurt the economy. I'm all for taking a stand against unfair policies, but can't we do it without causing so much disruption?

I've been seeing all these memes and posts about "ICE Out of Minnesota," and honestly, I just don't see the point... Like, what's the solution here? Do they want ICE to just magically disappear? It's not that simple. And what about all the people who are actually being targeted by ICE? They need help, not protests.

I'm also worried about the rhetoric getting out of hand - calling ICE officers "criminal thugs" isn't exactly constructive, you know? ๐Ÿ˜’ We should be having a calm, rational discussion about immigration policy, not resorting to name-calling and outrage.

omg like 500k ppl showed up at the protests ๐Ÿคฏ and its not just minnesota either ๐Ÿ—บ๏ธ 30 states have joined in and its getting crazy ๐Ÿ˜… ice is literally shutting down major cities and businesses are being forced to close for the day ๐Ÿ“‰ with over 200 shops already down and nearly 700 more predicted to follow suit ๐Ÿ’ธ meanwhile law makers are kinda meh just like 75% of americans support stricter immigration laws so idk maybe they'll take action or maybe not ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ anyway this is huge and i'm loving the data ๐Ÿ“Š did u know that immigrants make up 13.4% of minnesota's population ๐Ÿš€ but ice has been operating in the state since 2006 which is crazy ๐Ÿ˜ฒ

I'm thinking these protests in Minnesota are pretty cool... I mean, it's not every day you see thousands of people come together for a cause like this ๐Ÿค. It's all about standing up against ICE and demanding justice for Renee Nicole Good.

I don't think anyone likes the way ICE is treating immigrants in Minnesota - they're basically using intimidation tactics to get what they want ๐Ÿ˜’. The fact that some people are calling them "criminal thugs" says a lot about how people feel.

And I'm all for the economic blackout idea - it's like, we can't let our economy be held hostage by companies that support ICE operations ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™‚๏ธ. If 700 businesses shut down for the day, that's gotta hurt some people.

It's interesting to see how the authorities are responding to these protests - on one hand, they're saying it's "beyond insane", but on the other hand, they need to take action and do something about the systemic issues that led to Renee Good's death in the first place.

Overall, I think this is a great example of people using their voices to make a difference ๐Ÿ’–. We just need to keep pushing for change and holding our leaders accountable ๐Ÿ‘Š.

This whole thing is getting so crazy ๐Ÿ”ฅ๐Ÿ‘Š! I mean, 200+ businesses just shutting down? That's some serious solidarity ๐Ÿ’ช! But at the same time, it's super worrying about the situation with ICE and how they're affecting people's lives ๐Ÿคฏ. We need to get a handle on this ASAP and make sure everyone has access to justice, regardless of their immigration status ๐ŸŒŸ.

And can we talk about Emilia Gonzรกlez Avalos for a sec? ๐Ÿ’โ€โ™€๏ธ I love her passion and determination - she's giving me major Leslie Knope vibes from Parks and Rec ๐Ÿ˜‚! Anyway, it's awesome that more people are getting involved and making their voices heard. We need to keep the momentum going and push for real change ๐Ÿ”„.

It's also really interesting to see how different groups are coming together on this issue - labor unions, faith leaders, and civic organizations all united against ICE ๐Ÿ˜Š. We can't let politics get in the way of justice and human rights ๐Ÿ’–. And what's up with Randi Weingarten saying that ICE is just using intimidation tactics? ๐Ÿ‘ฎโ€โ™‚๏ธ It's time to take a stand and fight for what's right!

Ugh, I don't know how much more of this I can take... ๐Ÿคฏ I mean, sure, I get it, protesting against ICE operations in Minnesota is a big deal, but do we really need to be walking out on our jobs and skipping school too? It's just gonna cause more chaos, ya know? And what's with the -20 degrees weather? Can't these people just stay warm for one day? ๐Ÿ˜“ I'm all for standing up for what you believe in, but is this really the best way to do it?

And don't even get me started on the economic blackout. Like, okay, fine, if businesses want to shut down, that's their prerogative, but what about people who actually need to work? I'm not sure how much of an impact this whole protest thing is gonna have in the long run... ๐Ÿค”

I'm really worried about the way this whole thing is going down ๐Ÿค•. Thousands of people walking out in solidarity with protesters against ICE operations? It's not just about protesting, it's about people's lives being affected by these policies. I mean, Renee Nicole Good was killed by ICE officers in Minnesota and no one has been held accountable yet. It's a travesty.

The fact that more than 200 businesses are shutting down today because of this movement is huge ๐Ÿ“ˆ. It shows how much people care about the issue and are willing to take a stand. The economic blackout could have serious consequences for the state, but I think it's worth it if it brings about change.

I'm also disappointed in some of the responses from authorities. "Beyond insane" is not an acceptable way to describe peaceful protesters. And what's with the police and ICE calling the protesters "criminal thugs"? That kind of rhetoric only escalates the situation.

The fact that organizations like UNIDOS Minnesota and the American Federation of Teachers are leading this movement shows that there are people who care about social justice and are willing to take action. We need more leaders like these who can bring attention to issues like police brutality and immigration policy.

๐Ÿค” I'm so over all these protests and demonstrations... like, can't people just do their jobs and shopping without making a scene? ๐Ÿ™„ I mean, I get it, ICE needs to be held accountable for their actions, but do they really need to shut down the whole state? It's gonna cause a lot of inconvenience for regular people trying to get by. And what's with all the anti-ICE chants? Can't we just have a calm conversation about this stuff instead of resorting to name-calling? ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ I'm all for investigating ICE, but can't we do it without shutting down the economy or making it look like everyone's against law enforcement? It's kinda hard to take anyone seriously when they're acting out like this... ๐Ÿ˜’

๐Ÿšจ This protest in Minnesotta is getting crazy cold ๐Ÿฅถ but I guess that's the point - people are willing to suffer for their cause. The fact that 200+ businesses have shut down and nearly 700 more are planning to join them shows just how serious this movement is.

I'm all for standing up against injustice, especially when it comes to ICE's tactics being super abusive and intimidatory. But I do think the whole "Day of Truth and Freedom" thing might be a bit dramatic ๐Ÿ˜‚. It's not like they're trying to take over the state or anything. They just want ICE to leave.

It's also interesting to see the involvement of faith leaders, labor unions, and other civic orgs. It shows that this is a movement that's all about unity and solidarity. And with people like Randi Weingarten from the AFT speaking out against ICE's tactics, it's clear that there are some powerful voices on both sides of the issue.

Anyway, I'm curious to see how this whole thing plays out. Will lawmakers listen? Will ICE leave Minnesota for good? Only time will tell ๐Ÿ•ฐ๏ธ

man I cant even imagine freezing that cold in minnesota lol -20 degrees feels like actual winter โ„๏ธ, but for real though these protesters are so brave for standing up for what they believe in, especially when it comes to ICE and immigration policies ๐Ÿค• its like they're not backing down even when authorities are being super antagonistic ๐Ÿ™…โ€โ™‚๏ธ i feel bad for the people who lost their jobs that day tho ๐Ÿ˜” but at the same time i get why they had to do it, its like they're not just fighting for themselves but for the entire community ๐Ÿค

Ice Out of Minnesotta its pretty wild how every body is standin up against ICE operations in the state its like every one's gettin united for somethin thats really right, boycotts, marches, even school skipped by kids ๐Ÿคฏ๐Ÿ’ช. Im not surprised tho that there be some heat on law enforcement about police brutality, cause we all no how it goes down when you're tryna crack down on people who r already bein held down. its like they wanna just keep on provokin communities 2 erupt ๐Ÿšจ๐Ÿ’ฅ

omg can't believe ppl r doin this ๐Ÿคฏ like what's the point of shutdowns but at least its for a good cause -ICE outta MN! ๐Ÿ‘ meanwhile, i wonder if they'll get any results from this economic blackout... 200+ businesses down already and only 700 more to go lol what's next? ๐Ÿ˜‚
