Local Parent Charged with Stealing $61K from Philadelphia Schools for Her Own Gain
A Philadelphia woman faces serious charges after allegedly scamming the School District of Philadelphia out of more than $61,000. Laurel Schullere, who has two children enrolled in city schools, supposedly required therapeutic care for her kids but instead, directed school officials to send payments to a business called Missing Pieces.
Unbeknownst to authorities, Schullere owns the company and had been misleading the district by claiming it was providing services to her children. An investigation revealed that the company did not exist or operate in any capacity, with two addresses listed for it - one abandoned and the other belonging to a church.
Over nine years, the school district paid over $61,000 to Schullere without receiving any evidence of the business's activities. Attorney General Dave Sunday stated, "This defendant exploited a system designed to help her own children grow and succeed... Instead of ensuring the children received the care they needed, the defendant misled the district and pocketed taxpayer dollars."
Schullere surrendered to authorities on Wednesday and is now facing charges related to theft by deception.
