Medical examiner rules Bronx toddler's drowning at day care accidental

A Bronx toddler's tragic death at a daycare center has been ruled an accident, according to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner. River Wilson, just 20 months old, drowned on August 1st while in care at Ana's Butterfly Garden Family Group in Castle Hill. The ruling came nearly two months after her passing.

River's parents, Ifiok and Ima Wilson, have taken their fight for justice to court, suing the daycare center and its operators over allegations of negligence that led to their daughter's death. The lawsuit was filed earlier this month with the support of U.S. Rep. Ritchie Torres.

In a recent inspection in May, state officials found no issues with pool access, but just three days after River's death, inspectors cited the daycare center for nine violations, including an inadequate pool fence and suspended its license.

Despite the suspension, River's death remains under investigation by law enforcement authorities, who have yet to criminally charge anyone in connection with her passing. A spokesperson for the Bronx district attorney's office stated that evidence is still being evaluated.

Torres has introduced federal legislation, dubbed "River's Law", aimed at banning swimming pools at residential day care centers and requiring door and window alarms. The family's attorney and the daycare operators have yet to comment on the medical examiner's ruling.

this is just heartbreaking ๐Ÿค• I mean, can you even imagine a 20-month-old toddler drowning in a pool at daycare? ๐Ÿ˜ฑ it's a nightmare come true. what's going on with our system of care for kids?! first they're saying it was an accident, then the parents take them to court and suddenly there are all these new 'violations' that weren't even noticed before... ๐Ÿค” like what were the inspectors doing just sitting around waiting for a tragedy to happen? ๐Ÿ’ก and now we have this new "Ritchie Torres" bill that's kinda cool I guess, but is it really enough to prevent something like this from happening again? ๐Ÿค

๐Ÿค•๐Ÿ˜ข This is so sad... a 20 month old little life cut short in such a tragic way. I can only imagine how devastating this must be for River's parents Ifiok & Ima Wilson ๐Ÿคฏ๐Ÿ’”. The fact that there were 'only' 9 violations at the daycare center is just not enough - it should've been prevented earlier ๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿฝ.

The whole situation feels like a ticking time bomb, with multiple parties still trying to figure out what went wrong and who's responsible ๐Ÿ•ฐ๏ธ๐Ÿค”. It's heartbreaking that River won't get to grow up and live her life as she deserves to ๐ŸŒŸ. And poor Ana's Butterfly Garden Family Group - their license got suspended just 3 days after the tragedy... hope they can recover from this ๐Ÿ’ฏ.

I do love Rep Ritchie Torres for taking on the fight for justice - "River's Law" seems like a great start to prevent such tragedies in the future ๐ŸŒˆ๐Ÿ’–. Fingers crossed that law enforcement finds those responsible and makes them accountable ๐Ÿ˜Š.

๐Ÿค• this is so unfair ๐Ÿค• River was such a young life cut short ๐ŸŒน my heart goes out to her parents, Ima & Ifiok ๐Ÿ˜” it doesn't feel right that they're still in limbo with no clear answers about what happened ๐Ÿค” the suspension of the daycare's license feels like just a Band-Aid fix ๐Ÿ’ธ "River's Law" sounds like a good idea, maybe it'll bring some real change to these situations ๐Ÿ’ช but I wish we could've seen more action sooner โฑ๏ธ still so much uncertainty around River's passing... ๐Ÿ˜”

Man this River Wilson case is just heartbreaking ๐Ÿ˜”. I can imagine how traumatic it must be for her parents to still not get any answers about what happened to their baby girl. The whole situation with the daycare center, like they knew something was up but just didn't do anything about it... nine violations in May and then suddenly all these problems pop up after River's death? It's a lot to swallow.

But at the same time, I'm glad that someone is taking action on this case. Rep. Ritchie Torres' "River's Law" initiative could really make a difference for kids like River who don't deserve to suffer just because their parents can't afford proper care ๐Ÿค. It's a step in the right direction, even if it's late. The fact that law enforcement is still investigating and hasn't charged anyone yet is definitely concerning though - more questions than answers seem to be the norm here ๐Ÿ‘Ž

๐Ÿ˜• I'm not buying this 'accident' ruling for a second... what kind of checks and balances are there really in place? It seems like they just swept it under the rug, given those nine violations just three days after River died ๐Ÿคฏ. And now we've got Ritchie Torres pushing his "River's Law" bill, which sounds more like a PR stunt to me than actual reform ๐Ÿ’ผ. I mean, are we seriously going to ban pools at daycares because of one tragic incident? It seems like a lot of people want a scapegoat and some politicians are happy to oblige ๐Ÿ™„. We need real accountability here, not just a Band-Aid solution that doesn't address the root issues ๐Ÿ‘Ž

๐Ÿ˜” just saw this news about River Wilson... my heart goes out to her parents ๐Ÿค• 20 months old, that's too young to leave this world ๐Ÿ’”. I don't think a lawsuit is gonna bring back their little one but they have the right to fight for justice https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/river-wilson-daycare-suspension-911n1242259 ๐Ÿšจ 9 violations in May and then just days after... that's not good enough ๐Ÿ˜’. The law rep, Ritchie Torres, is trying to do something about it but it's gonna take time โฐ https://www.cbsnews.com/news/river-wilsons-law-911n1242175 ๐Ÿ‘ฎโ€โ™‚๏ธ

omg just read about River Wilson ๐Ÿ˜ญ her life was so young and full of promise ๐Ÿ’” it's heartbreaking that she died under such circumstances ๐Ÿค• i feel so bad for her parents, Ifiok & Ima, who must be going through hell right now ๐Ÿ’€ what really gets me is that the daycare center had already been cited for pool safety issues just days before River's death ๐Ÿšจ and they still didn't take any action to fix it? ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™€๏ธ hope the authorities do some serious digging into this one... https://nyc.gov/news/1935/bronx-daycare-center-suspended-licensure-over-negligence-allegations ๐Ÿ‘Ž

this is just heartbreaking ๐Ÿค• my heart goes out to River's parents, they're still trying to process what happened to their little one. 20 months old is so young... I don't know how anyone can prepare for that kind of loss ๐Ÿ’”. and it's all so avoidable - a simple fence around the pool would've saved her life ๐Ÿšง. it's frustrating that no one has been charged yet, it feels like there's still no accountability for what happened ๐Ÿ‘ฎโ€โ™‚๏ธ. Ritchie Torres' "River's Law" is a good start, but I hope it leads to some real change in how these places are regulated ๐Ÿ“Š. the fact that they suspended their license 3 days after River's death just feels like more evidence of negligence...

It's wild to me that it took almost two months for the medical examiner to rule River's death an accident ๐Ÿค”. I mean, can't we just get straight answers already? ๐Ÿ˜ฉ The parents are still pushing for justice and I gotta respect that, but at the same time, you've got to wonder what really went down in those last few days before she passed away... was it a total accident or is there more to it? ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ I also feel bad for River's family, but it's frustrating when we don't see action being taken ASAP. ๐Ÿ•ฐ๏ธ The rep's "we're still evaluating evidence" line just sounds like cop-out to me, like they're stalling on some info ๐Ÿ˜’
