Massive winter storm Fern moves through US – video

A powerful winter storm dubbed "Fern" has wreaked havoc across the United States, leaving a trail of destruction and chaos in its wake.

The massive low-pressure system made landfall on Tuesday, bringing with it sustained winds of over 60mph and heavy snowfall that crippled transportation networks. The National Weather Service had issued a Blizzard Warning for several states along the East Coast, including New York, Massachusetts, and Pennsylvania, as the storm's powerful gusts reduced visibility to near zero.

As Fern moved inland, it brought significant disruptions to daily life, with schools, businesses, and roads shut down due to the treacherous conditions. Thousands of flights were grounded at major airports, including New York's JFK and LaGuardia, while Amtrak suspended all train service across the Northeast.

The storm's impact was not limited to the East Coast, however. A separate swath of severe weather swept through the Midwest and South, causing power outages and flooding in several states. The National Weather Service warned of "life-threatening" conditions in parts of Illinois, Indiana, and Kentucky, where snowdrifts reached as high as 10 feet.

Fern's journey is expected to continue, with forecasters predicting that the storm will make landfall again on Wednesday along the Gulf Coast. Residents are bracing themselves for another round of heavy rain and strong winds, which could exacerbate existing flooding and power outages.

As the storm subsides, emergency responders are working tirelessly to rescue those stranded by Fern's powerful forces. With thousands without electricity or heat, relief efforts are underway to support affected communities. The full extent of Fern's impact is still unfolding, but one thing is clear: this winter storm has left an indelible mark on the United States.

Ugh, I'm so exhausted thinking about all these storms already. 🤯 Fern seems like a real beast! 60mph winds and near zero visibility? No wonder they had to shut everything down for safety. And now it's going to make landfall again? 😓 That's just cruel. Power outages, flooding... people are really struggling here. I do hope emergency responders can get everyone help ASAP tho 🙏

man... fern just keeps getting worse & worse 🌨️ like how can a storm be so powerful? i feel bad for all those people stuck in the snow without heat or power... it's crazy how quickly things can go from normal to total chaos 😨 also, i hope everyone is staying safe out there 🙏 and i'm keeping an eye on those poor folks in illinois & kentucky with those 10-foot snowdrifts 🤯

Ugh I'm so glad I live in a place that doesn't get hit by storms like this every year 🙏💨 Fern is literally the worst, and I can only imagine how crazy it must be for people stuck in the East Coast right now 😩🌨️ The power outages are no joke, especially with winter being so cold already ❄️. And I'm super worried about those stranded by the storm - emergency responders are doing their best to help 🤝💕 It's days like these that make me want to just hibernate and stay safe indoors ☕🏠. Can we talk about self-care for when storms hit, tho? Like how can we prioritize our mental health during this time 🤔💆‍♀️

This storm is like a perfect example of how our country's infrastructure is still a work in progress 🤯. I mean, 60mph winds and heavy snowfall are no joke, especially when you have to deal with transportation networks that can't even keep up 💨. It's like we're still playing catch-up in terms of preparedness and emergency response. And don't even get me started on the power outages – it's a classic case of "can't fix what ain't broke" 😒. We need to invest more in our grid, folks! And another thing, why are we always caught off guard by these massive storms? Is it just a matter of bad luck or is there something systemic at play? 🤔

I'm so worried about these people stuck in the snow 🌨️. 60mph winds and 10ft snowdrifts? That's crazy! 😲 I feel bad for those flights grounded at JFK and LaGuardia, all those people can't just cancel their plans on a whim. And what about those power outages? Is everyone okay? 🤞 The storm seems to be moving around the country, is it like a big, nasty nomad? 💥

I'm freaking out over here 🤯! Did you know that Fern has already caused over 1 million power outages across the US? That's like, a whole lotta darkness ☀️. And with temperatures plummeting to -20°C in some areas, it's no wonder people are freezing their tails off 😂. I mean, 10 feet of snowdrifts in Kentucky is straight-up crazy! 🤯 The National Weather Service says Fern has brought over $1 billion in damages so far... and that's not even counting the economic losses from all those cancelled flights and closed businesses 💸. By the way, have you seen the storm surge forecast for the Gulf Coast? It's looking like a major mess is brewing 🌊. The US is basically under winter storm alert right now 😅. Time to stock up on hot chocolate and wait it out! ☕

😞 this fern thingy is crazy! like i was planning a ski trip with my mates last weekend and now it's snowing so hard everywhere 🌨️♂️. how are people supposed to get around without power or heat? that's just harsh 🤕. and another thing, why did they have to make the airports shut down? like, i know safety first and all, but can't they just fly low or something? 🚨 anyway, gotta feel for everyone stuck in this mess 💔. hope it passes soon 🙏

🌨️ I feel bad for all those stuck at home with no heat or power. Like, how r u even supposed to chill when it's -20 outside? 🤒 And what's up with these power outages tho? Can't our grid just handle a little snow? 😂 Anyway, gotta give props to the emergency responders who are risking their lives to help people in need. 💕 That's some real hero stuff right there.

OMG 💥🌨️ like seriously what's going on with this fern thing ??? 🤯 it's like a real life game of god of war or something ! 😂 i mean who needs that kinda weather lol 🌪️ but for real tho, my heart goes out to everyone in the east coast they must be literally shivering rn ❄️ and what's with all these power outages ?? 🤯 how are people supposed to survive without electricity ? 💡 is it like... a winter wonderland or something ??? ❄️ snowdrifts 10 feet high lol 😂 sounds like a real life video game level 👾

I'm just so moved by all the people who are struggling right now 🤝. I mean, 10 feet of snowdrifts in parts of Illinois? That's crazy! And thousands without heat or electricity... it's like, what can we even say to them? Just know that you're not alone and there are so many amazing people working behind the scenes to help them out 🌟. I'm thinking of all the first responders, volunteers, and aid workers who are risking their own safety to bring warmth and light to those in need ❤️. And let's not forget about the resilience of the American people – we've been through tough storms like this before and we always come out stronger on the other side 💪. So, let's all send some love and positive vibes to everyone affected by Fern 🌈. We got this! 💕

Ugh, can't believe I got snowed in like 3 times already this season 🌨️😩. And now Fern comes along and ruins everything... I mean, seriously, 60mph winds? That's just crazy! 😲 And don't even get me started on the roads, I saw vids of people trying to drive with all that snow and ice... it's a miracle nobody got hurt 🙏. And can we talk about the airlines for a sec? Grounding thousands of flights? No thanks, been stuck in JFK for 24hrs already 🚫😴. Not looking forward to Wednesday's potential landfall either, fingers crossed they don't make things worse 💔.

😒 I'm shocked it wasn't a "Polar Vortex" this time... like we haven't seen that movie before 🙄. Seriously though, 60mph winds and 10ft snowdrifts? Who needs that kind of drama in their life? On the bright side, I guess all those flights grounded mean no one got to deal with that awful in-flight coffee ☕️. And yay for Amtrak suspending train service - now we can finally catch up on our Netflix shows 📺!

omg this fern storm is insane 🤯 i feel so bad for all those ppl stuck in the snow and dark without heat or power 💡 their hard work as emergency responders is truly appreciated ❤️ i hope everyone stays safe n gets thru this rough patch 🌫️

I'm worried about all these people stuck at home with no heat or power 🤕. How are they supposed to stay safe and warm? The storm sounds super crazy, 60mph winds are like whoa 💥! I hope everyone is okay and gets to where they need to go soon 🚗. And what's up with all the flights getting grounded? I've got friends traveling for the holidays and now this 🤦‍♂️.

Ugh man, I'm so glad we don't have that kind of snow where I live 🌨️😓. I mean I get it, the East Coast takes a hit every year but wow, 10 feet of snow in the Midwest is just crazy! 😲 We should be prepared for this kind of thing and not get caught off guard like that. I've been following this storm and it's just relentless, from one state to another 🤯. I'm just glad the rescue efforts are kicking in, people need help ASAP ⚠️. And can you imagine being stuck at JFK airport with no flights? 😩 I feel for all those stranded travelers. Hopefully, things will calm down soon and we can get back to some sense of normalcy 🌞.

Ugh I know, Fern is just a nightmare 🌪️... people should really start planning ahead for these kinds of storms, you know? Like, have emergency kits ready and all that stuff. And can we talk about how ridiculous it is to have thousands of flights grounded at the same time? Like, what's the point of having airports if you're not gonna fly? 🤷‍♂️ The fact that Amtrak had to suspend train service too is just a bummer for people who rely on that for transportation. And I feel bad for those in the Midwest and South who got hit with power outages and flooding... at least they got some snow 😊, I guess. Anyway, it's gonna be a long day recovering from Fern's mess... 🤒
