Local Business Icon and Community Leader Joseph Zainea Passes Away at 92
Detroit has lost a beloved figure, as Joseph John Zainea, the long-time steward of the Majestic Theatre Center and Garden Bowl, has passed away on February 4th at the age of 92. His death marks the end of an era for this iconic Detroit institution.
Born on January 4th, 1934, Zainea spent his life serving not just as a restaurateur but also as a pillar in his community. As "Papa Joe" to his customers and staff, he built lasting relationships that transcended generations at the Garden Bowl on Woodward Avenue. This historic bowling alley is believed to be one of the nation's longest continuously operating venues, with Zainea playing a pivotal role in its transformation into a gathering place for Detroiters.
Under Zainea's leadership, his family expanded the business to include what is now known as the Majestic Theatre Center – a thriving complex of music venues, restaurants, and bars that has become synonymous with local talent across multiple genres. From hosting famous acts to providing a respite during times of turmoil, such as during the 1967 Detroit uprising when Zainea opened the Garden Bowl to law enforcement and emergency responders, his commitment to serving others was unwavering.
Beyond his professional achievements, Zainea was an active member of civic organizations, receiving a lifetime achievement award in 2008 for his community involvement. His dedication extended to supporting initiatives such as The Children's Center of Wayne County, which provides vital services for children and families in need.
Zainea is survived by his wife of 68 years, Mary; their children, Leane, David, Kathryn, and Joe; and two grandchildren. Funeral services will be held on February 11th at St. Matthew Catholic Church in Detroit, followed by burial at Mt. Olivet Cemetery. As the city mourns the loss of this extraordinary individual, it is clear that his legacy will continue to inspire future generations of community leaders and business owners.
