Horror show: North American box office records lowest monthly total since 1997

Box office earnings for North American cinema have plunged to their lowest level since the late 1990s, with October's total coming in at just $425 million. This dismal figure is largely attributed to the absence of major blockbusters, as well as disappointing performances from awards season films.

The usually reliable Halloween weekend proved a disappointment, too, with the holiday weekend yielding an astonishingly low $48.3 million in ticket sales - a full 30% lower than last year's equivalent period. The dismal take was largely due to the fact that several highly anticipated horror movies failed to materialize, including Black Phone 2 and Shelby Oaks, which collectively grossed just $8.77 million over the weekend.

Other factors contributing to the poor box office performance include a lack of major releases, coupled with the timing of Halloween - as many movie-goers were likely distracted by the World Series baseball games, which concluded on November 1st. Analyst Jeff Bock attributed the disappointing results to the failure of big-name films, stating that "there just weren't enough horror films to entice moviegoers."

However, not all was bad news for cinema's bottom line - a Taylor Swift concert film grossed a respectable $34 million over its short theatrical run from October 3rd-5th. Despite this one silver lining, the overall picture is bleak for the North American box office, and it remains to be seen how cinema-goers will respond to the upcoming awards season releases.

๐Ÿค” I'm not surprised by the plunge in box office earnings, tbh... I mean, what's new, right? ๐Ÿ™ƒ It's been a while since we've seen anything earth-shatteringly big at the movies. But still, $425 million is a pretty low number for October alone. And don't even get me started on Halloween weekend - 30% lower than last year? That's just crazy talk! ๐Ÿ˜ฒ I guess you can blame it on the timing and the lack of decent horror flicks... or maybe it's just the fact that people were distracted by baseball games. ๐ŸŽŸ๏ธ Either way, I'm not holding my breath for the awards season releases to turn things around. Fingers crossed, though! ๐Ÿ’ช

awww poor cinema ๐ŸŽฅ๐Ÿ˜” think they really need some new horror movies or something, idk what's wrong with people these days ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ but yaaas taylor swift concert film is a whole different story ๐Ÿ’– that girl can do no wrong ๐Ÿ’โ€โ™€๏ธ and fyi baseball games are always gonna be distracting for movie nights ๐Ÿ˜ด gotta keep the sports and movies separate tho ๐Ÿ‘

๐Ÿค” I mean, think about it - $425 million isn't so bad considering the lack of big-name movies! ๐ŸŽฅ It's like the box office is taking a breather before all the award-season buzz kicks in. And let's be real, who needs all those horror movies, right? ๐Ÿ˜… The low ticket sales on Halloween weekend might've been due to people being distracted by the World Series - it's not like they were just tuning out, they had other things on their minds! ๐Ÿ“บ Plus, a $34 million concert film isn't too shabby - I guess you could say Taylor Swift brought some magic to the box office ๐Ÿ˜Š. All in all, not a totally disastrous year for cinema, right? ๐Ÿ’ช

๐ŸŽฅ๐Ÿ˜• Box office blues got me down! $425 million is a pretty low number, especially considering the usual hype around Halloween weekend. I'm not surprised though, horror movies are always a hit with fans during this time but it seems like some big-name films fell through this year ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™‚๏ธ. What's really puzzling is how Taylor Swift's concert film did so well ๐Ÿค‘ - that's some silver linings right there! Anyway, fingers crossed for the awards season releases... maybe they can bring some much-needed life to the box office ๐Ÿ’ซ

๐Ÿ˜” This is really not a good time for movies ๐Ÿฟ. It's like, where did all the cool stuff go? I was so hyped for Black Phone 2 and Shelby Oaks, but it seems like they just kinda fizzled out ๐ŸŽฅ. And Halloween weekend, which is always supposed to be super big, was basically a wash ๐Ÿค”. Like, I get it, baseball games can be pretty captivating, but come on! We need some juicy horror movies to save the day ๐Ÿ˜‚.

I do have to give props to Taylor Swift though ๐Ÿ™Œ - her concert film did okay ๐Ÿค‘. But overall, it's like the magic is gone from going to the cinema ๐ŸŽฌ. I'm still hoping for a comeback with those awards season releases, but it's hard not to feel a little down about the whole thing ๐Ÿ˜”.

man ๐Ÿค” i'm not surprised at all with these numbers...like, where r we supposed to get a big blockbuster every month? ๐Ÿค‘ but, you know, sometimes those horror movies just dont live up 2 the hype ๐ŸŽƒ๐Ÿ‘ป and taylor swift's concert film was actually kinda sweet ๐Ÿ˜Š๐ŸŽต but seriously, the box office is all about the timing rn...when r u supposed to release a movie during a baseball world series? ๐Ÿ†๐Ÿ‘€ gotta think about it strategically or else u're gonna get left in the dust ๐Ÿš‚๐Ÿ’จ

Ugh, movie theaters are really struggling right now ๐Ÿฟ๐Ÿ˜• It's like, I get that not every film is gonna be a blockbuster, but $425 million in October? That's crazy low! And don't even get me started on Halloween weekend - $48.3 million is basically zero ๐Ÿค‘ The horror movies just didn't deliver this year, and with World Series baseball games happening around the same time, it's hard to blame people for skipping out.

I do have to give some props though, that Taylor Swift concert film did pretty well ๐Ÿ’ธ It's always great to see live music on the big screen! But overall, it seems like studios need to step up their game and release some more solid films ๐Ÿค” Maybe they can learn from this slump and try again next year?

ugh what's going on with movies rn? ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™‚๏ธ first of all black phone 2 was supposed to be this huge horror movie but it tanked hard... like $8.77 million is crazy low even for a horror flick. and don't even get me started on shelby oaks, i've been hearing about that one for ages and it just didn't deliver. ๐ŸŽƒ meanwhile taylor swift's concert film did alright but that's not the same as having actual good movies out ๐Ÿค‘ anyway, i'm still hoping some decent awards season flicks will turn things around...

I'm so bummed about the state of movies right now ๐Ÿฟ๐Ÿ˜” The last few Halloween weekends have been a total letdown. I mean, what's up with no major horror flicks this year? It's like we were expecting some new spooky classics but instead got nothing ๐Ÿ˜…. And yeah, the baseball games must've sucked the life out of it. I was really looking forward to something scary for Halloween but I guess I'll just have to wait till next year ๐ŸŽƒ. On a brighter note, at least that Swift concert film did alright. Taylor Swift fans are always loyal! ๐Ÿ’–

can't believe they're saying goodbye to a solid $425 million in just one month ๐Ÿค‘๐ŸŽฅ the studios should be worried, but at least taylor swift's concert film brought some heat ๐Ÿ’โ€โ™€๏ธ 30% lower than last year? that's not great for anyone involved ๐Ÿค• and what's up with no major horror movies? are people really scared of black phone 2 ๐Ÿ˜…

omg what's going on with movies rn? i was really looking forward to some new blockbusters but it looks like none showed up ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™€๏ธ๐Ÿฟ ugh dont get me wrong, i love taylor swift and the concert film did pretty well but cmon $425 million is like, woah low ๐Ÿ’ธ at least they had a good weekend with the tswift movie tho ๐Ÿ‘ hope the awards season films bring some life to the box office ๐ŸŽฅ๐Ÿ‘€

๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™‚๏ธ Yeah, I'm not surprised by these numbers at all. I mean, have you been following the movie industry trends lately? ๐Ÿ™„ It's like everyone's forgotten how to make a decent blockbuster film. And don't even get me started on the timing of Halloween - it's always gonna be tough when there are sports events going on that people would rather watch than go to the movies. But come on, can't they just get some big-name films out already? ๐ŸŽฌ I'm not buying the whole "not enough horror movies" excuse. If they really wanted to do something about it, they should've been releasing more of those this year. The fact that Black Phone 2 and Shelby Oaks did so poorly is just another confirmation of that theory. And what's with Taylor Swift's concert film? That's not exactly a huge accomplishment when you're talking about the entire movie-going industry here... ๐Ÿค‘

It's like, you know when you first watched those old horror movies on VHS or whatever? They were all about being super scary and stuff, right? Nowadays, it seems like nobody cares about a good fright anymore ๐ŸŽƒ๏ธ. I mean, where are the Blockbuster-esque films that people used to flock to see? These new releases just aren't holding up to expectations, what with everyone too busy playing baseball games in October ๐ŸŸ๏ธ.

I'm kinda surprised no one's talking about how different things were back when movies were a bigger part of our lives. I mean, remember those epic summers where you'd stay home and watch 'em till midnight? Now it's all like... awards season this, and streaming that... ๐Ÿ˜” It's just not the same anymore.

๐Ÿค” it's crazy how much of a difference a few big movies can make in the box office earnings... I mean, last year we were seeing over $600 million for Halloween weekend alone! Now, with the horror movies not coming through and some other stuff going on, it's like... what happened? ๐ŸŽƒ I'm kinda curious to see how the awards season releases will do. Are studios gonna start making more big-budget films or just stick to smaller, lower-risk options? ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ

omg, I'm like totally shocked that horror movies didn't kill it at the box office lol. i mean, you'd think people would wanna see some good old fashioned frights this Halloween ๐ŸŽƒ๐Ÿ‘ป but nope! it's all about baseball games, amirite? and poor Taylor Swift's concert film is just a tiny beam of light in an otherwise dark cinematic landscape ๐ŸŒŸ๐ŸŽถ. seriously though, what's up with blockbusters not doing well right now? did we get bored or something? ๐Ÿ˜ด๐Ÿ’”

I'm telling ya, it's not just about the movies ๐Ÿค”. I think something fishy is going on here. First of all, why did those big-name horror films disappear? It's like they were intentionally kept off the shelves... or screens, I guess. And don't even get me started on the timing of the Halloween weekend - it's like they're trying to distract us from something ๐Ÿ˜’.

And what about that Taylor Swift concert film? That's just a weird coincidence, right? A $34 million gross in just three days? Come on, that's some serious marketing magic ๐Ÿ”ฎ. I'm not buying it (pun intended).

We need to dig deeper into this one... I mean, what if the real story behind the poor box office numbers is more complex than we think? ๐Ÿคฏ Maybe there are other factors at play here... like a conspiracy to suppress movie sales or something ๐Ÿ˜.

omg... what's going on with box office? ๐Ÿคฏ $425 million in Oct is like, super low! I guess people just weren't into horror movies this year or something? wasn't there supposed to be more of them out?

also, Halloween weekend was a total bust. 30% lower than last year... that's crazy! World Series might've been distracting ppl from the movies, but still, u expect some decent blockbusters to bring in the cash? ๐ŸŽฅ

Taylor Swift concert film tho, $34 million isn't bad! guess it's all about timing and people paying attention. but overall, North American box office is tanking... hope there are better days ahead! ๐Ÿคž
