Google is making a major move into India's burgeoning AI market by offering its Gemini AI tool for free to customers of Jio, the country's largest mobile carrier. The deal, which Reliance Intelligence, an AI-focused subsidiary of the conglomerate Reliance Industries, has brokered with Google, will provide users on Jio's Unlimited 5G plan with access to the most advanced version of Gemini – known as Gemini 2.5 Pro – at no additional cost for a period of 18 months.
As part of this offer, subscribers will also benefit from enhanced capabilities in AI image and video generators, including increased limits on the Nano Banana and Veo 3.1 tools, while expanded access to NotebookLM is also included. To sweeten the deal further, Jio customers will receive 2TB of cloud storage across Google's various apps, a package valued at around $396 per user.
The initial roll-out of this offer is limited to subscribers aged between 18 and 25, but Jio aims to expand this to all eligible users via its MyJio app in the future. This partnership marks another significant step by Google in its pursuit of AI supremacy globally – a strategy that has seen the company invest heavily in India's growing tech sector.
India is rapidly emerging as a hotbed for AI innovation, with major players including Perplexity AI and Bharti Airtel already making moves to capitalize on this trend. In July, Perplexity partnered with Airtel to offer its Pro subscription to all 360 million customers – a year-long deal worth $200. Meanwhile, OpenAI has recently launched its cheapest ChatGPT subscription in India, at an affordable price of 390 rupees ($4.60), targeting users with limited budgets.
Google's aggressive foray into the Indian AI market is set to further intensify competition among tech giants vying for a foothold in this rapidly growing sector.
