Finland’s Prime Minister Sanna Marin concedes election | CNN

Finland's young Prime Minister Sanna Marin conceded defeat in Sunday's parliamentary election, ending her four-year tenure as the country's youngest prime minister. The opposition National Coalition Party (NCP), led by Petteri Orpo, claimed victory with 48 seats in parliament, narrowly ahead of the nationalist Finns Party and Marin's Social Democrats.

Orpo vowed to "fix Finland" and curb public spending, which has reached over 70% of GDP since Marin took office in 2019. He announced that he would form a coalition government with various groups to obtain a majority in parliament.

Marin, who was 37 when she became prime minister in 2019, acknowledged her party's support but admitted they did not finish first in the election. The young leader has faced criticism for her lavish spending and parting habits during her tenure, which may have contributed to her loss.

The NCP's victory marked a significant shift in Finnish politics, with Orpo's party promising austerity measures to curb deficit spending. Marin's Social Democrats, on the other hand, will likely govern with the support of the NCP but not the Finns Party, which Marin had accused of being "openly racist".

Finland's decision to join NATO has been a notable foreign policy action under Marin's leadership. The country is expected to join the Western defense alliance within days after all 30 members approved its accession.

The outcome of the election marks the end of Marin's era as prime minister, who had become a symbol of progressive politics among young leaders worldwide. However, her party remains popular among many Finns, particularly among young moderates who may continue to support Marin in future elections.

Omg I'm like totally shocked by Sanna Marin's concession 🤯💔! She was only 37 when she took office and became the youngest PM in Finland's history 🇫🇮. Her party's spending habits were always a hot topic, but I think they were gonna get her out in the end 😂. Petteri Orpo's austerity measures are def gonna shake things up in Finnish politics 💸📉. Can't wait to see how the new coalition government works 🤔. And omg, no more Marin's lavish spending habits and partying ways 😉! She may be losing her seat, but she'll always be a symbol of progressive politics for young leaders worldwide 💖 #SannaMarin #FinnishElections #NATO

can't believe marin went down like that 🤕 she was always so fiery and confident, but i guess the economy just took its toll on finland 📉 anyway, orpo's a good guy and all, but c'mon, 48 seats isn't exactly a landslide win 😐 and what about those austerity measures? gonna be super tough on low-income folks 👎 hope marin's social democrats can navigate this coal gov thing without losing too much steam 💪

🤔 I'm telling you, something fishy went down on Sunday's election day 🐟. Sanna Marin's loss was way too sudden, don't you think? 😏 She was barely 37 when she took office and now she's out of a job in just one go? That's not how it usually works 🤯. And what about the lavish spending rumors? Was that really just an honest mistake or was there something more to it? 💸 I mean, Finland's public spending has gone up by 70% since she took office... that's like a money laundering scheme if you ask me 🤑.

And have you noticed how quickly Petteri Orpo jumped on the bandwagon with his coalition government promise? That sounds way too convenient for my taste 😏. Maybe he was in cahoots with someone all along, just waiting for the right moment to strike 💣. I'm not saying Orpo is bad or anything (I guess), but you've got to keep an eye on him, if you know what I mean 😉.

I'm kinda surprised by Sanna Marin's loss 🤔. I mean, she was only 37 when she became PM and all, so you'd think that would be an automatic win 😅. But I guess Finns just didn't buy into the whole "socialist" thing anymore 🤑. I'm not saying it's a bad thing or anything, but it's interesting to see how politics changes over time.

I do love that Finland is joining NATO tho 🙌! It's about time they did, considering all the stuff that's been going on in Europe lately 💥. And I'm curious to see how Petteri Orpo's gonna fix Finland... or not 😜. The austerity measures might be a bit harsh, but I guess it's better than the deficit spending they had under Marin 🤦‍♂️.

Anyway, it's always cool to see new leaders emerge and try their hand at politics 💪! Maybe Sanna will make a comeback in the future 🎉.

omg i'm kinda shocked marin lost lol 🤯 she was like so young and powerful but i guess the finns got a little tired of her spending habits 😂 did u think she'd make it 4 more years tho? i mean, she's still gonna be a huge influence in politics no matter what tho 💁‍♀️

🤔 so i think its pretty interesting that sanna marin conceded defeat despite being only 37 when she took office 🤯 thats like, super young to be leading a country! and honestly, im kinda surprised she lasted as long as she did 😊. i mean, the oppositions promise of "fixing finland" and cutting public spending seems pretty appealing to some folks 🤑 but at what cost? marin's party was accused of being pretty lavish with their spending too 👀.

anyway, its gonna be interesting to see how marin's social democrats govern without the finns party's support 🤝 im also kinda curious about how marins social media habits 📱 and personal life 🚪 affected her public image... did it ultimately cost her the election? 🤔

Just saw the news about Sanna Marin and I'm like, totally surprised she lost 🤯👀 The way Orpo is talking about "fixing" Finland, it sounds kinda extreme 🤑 Like, how are they planning on doing that without hurting the economy? And what's with the whole public spending thing, 70% of GDP is already pretty high 😬 I guess it's good that Marin acknowledged her party didn't do so well. The Finns Party being labeled as "openly racist" though, that's a big deal 🤷‍♀️ Hopefully they can get over that and work together. Anyway, Finland joining NATO seems like a no-brainer given all the safety concerns in the region 🌎 It'll be interesting to see how Marin's party recovers from this loss 💔

the world of politics is all about perspective 🌎... think about it, sanna marin was just 37 when she became pm, can you imagine taking on that kind of responsibility at such a young age? 🤯 and look what happened, she got criticized for her spending habits, but did that stop her from doing what she thought was right? 💁‍♀️ nope... instead, it might've even driven her to be more passionate about making changes in finland.

and then there's petteri orpo, who's all about "fixing finland" and curbing public spending 📊... but is that really what's at the heart of politics? isn't it about finding a balance between saving money and investing in people & communities? 💸 i think marin's party, for all their flaws, were trying to do just that. so, before we judge Orpo's victory, let's remember that every leader has to make tough decisions 🤝... sometimes they'll be popular, sometimes they won't 👍

Ugh, I'm so done with the NCP's austerity measures 🤯. Like, Finland's already struggling financially, do they really need to cut public spending that much? 70% of GDP is already crazy high, what's the point of reducing it even more? 🤑 And now Orpo's all about "fixing" Finland, like he knows better than everyone else 🙄. Newsflash: Finland's got a lot more to offer than just cutting costs.

And what's with Marin's party taking a backseat just because they didn't win first place? 🤔 Can't they still govern and make decisions without being in power? And btw, the whole "Finns Party is openly racist" thing was totally uncalled for 😒. It was such an unfair attack.

Anyway, I guess it's time to say goodbye to Marin's era 🎉. She may not have won this election, but she'll always be remembered as a symbol of progressive politics 👏. But now that the NCP's in power, we'll just have to wait and see how they handle things 🤔

idk why ppl r surprised she lost lol she wasnt exactly known for being fiscally responsible 🤷‍♀️ Marin's lavish spending habits & wild parties were always gonna catch up with her in the end. and yeah, I can see how some ppl might think the Finns Party is "openly racist" but like, let's not jump to conclusions just yet 🙅‍♂️ and btw Finland joining NATO was probably a strategic move by Marin's gov't to boost national security & prestige... but I guess that means we'll have to wait & see how Orpo's gov't handles things 💸

🤯 can't believe sanna marin's reign is over like she was literally born yesterday 2019 felt like a lifetime ago 🕰️ i still remember when she became pm at 37 and people were like "oh she's so young but she'll be great" 😂 now she's conceding defeat and it's all about petteri orpo and his austerity measures 📉 ugh the thought of finland being more frugal is just depressing 💸 at least sanna's party still has a good rep among the youth 🤞 we'll see if they can keep that going in the future 👀
