Elon Musk’s Twitter promised a purge of blue check marks. Instead he singled out one account | CNN Business

Elon Musk's Twitter Purge: A Confusing Mix of Promises and Reality

In a surprise move, Elon Musk's decision to "wind down" blue check marks granted under his old verification system has sparked confusion among users. Initially, many were expecting their coveted blue verification badges to disappear on April 1 as part of Musk's plan to introduce a paid subscription service for Twitter Blue.

However, instead of a comprehensive purge, Twitter seems to have targeted only one high-profile account - that of the New York Times, which had previously declined to pay for its verification. The Times' main account lost its blue check mark over the weekend after posting a meme criticizing Musk's stance on paid verification.

Musk subsequently lashed out at the Times in a series of tweets, claiming their coverage is boring and "propaganda." This latest move has only added fuel to the fire, with many users expressing frustration and confusion about Twitter's handling of its verification system.

The change also raises questions about how Musk will enforce his plan to reserve blue checks for paid subscribers. Critics argue that this could make it easier for scammers to impersonate high-profile users, while experts say it's unclear whether reserving verification for paid users will reduce the number of bots on the site.

Musk has repeatedly stated that changes to Twitter's verification system are designed to "treat everyone equally." However, the recent decision to target only one account suggests a more selective approach. The billionaire also stands to gain from the new system, as it could drive revenue and help him pay off significant debt after buying Twitter for $44 billion.

As Twitter continues to evolve under Musk's leadership, users are left wondering what other changes are in store. One thing is certain - the platform's handling of verification has become increasingly confusing and erratic, leaving many to wonder whether Musk's vision is more focused on making a profit than protecting users.

💡 "The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy." 🤔
Musk's move has been all about creating controversy and stirring the pot. It's clear that his goal is to generate revenue and pay off debt, rather than prioritize user safety and fairness. This selective approach raises questions about accountability and trust on Twitter. Will users continue to follow Musk's lead or take matters into their own hands? The future of social media hangs in the balance 💥

🤔 I'm so confused about this whole blue check mark thing 🙄... one sec all blue checks are gone then they target just one account? 🚫 what's the point of that? 💸 can't say i trust Musk's intentions anymore, feels like he's more worried about making a profit than keeping Twitter safe 👀 has anyone thought about how this will affect scammers? 🤦‍♂️ they'll be able to impersonate anyone now! 💥 also what's with the Times being targeted? 📰 didn't see that coming... feels like Musk is just trying to control the narrative 📺 but honestly, I'm just lost at this point 🗺️

I'm so done with Twitter's verification system 🙄👀. Like, I get it, Elon wants to make some cash, but come on, targeting one account just to show who's boss? That's not treating everyone equally at all 😒. And what's up with the paid subscription thing? It feels like a money grab and now we're stuck in this confusing limbo where blue checks are randomly taken away and then sometimes re-granted 🤯. Can't they just figure out a simple way to do it? 🙄

idk what's goin on with twitter rn 🤔. elon musk just purged some blue checks but it ain't just one person he's targetin'... kinda weird that the ny times got hit while all the scammers and bots are still runnin wild 💥. how is this s'posed to treat everyone equally tho? 🙄 it feels like he's makin' a buck off the platform more than helpin out the users 🤑. anyone else feelin like twitter's losin its way 🤷‍♂️

idk about this, seems like Musk's trying to test how ppl react 🤔. targeting just one account feels sketchy, especially since it was a high-profile move like the NYT getting "punished" for not paying up. and now he's all upset with them in tweets? what's next? is this really about treating everyone equally or is it more about lining his pockets 💸? the paid subscription thing is still super confusing too... how does it work exactly? 🤷‍♂️

this whole thing just feels so messed up 🤯 i mean we're supposed to be moving forward with some kinda paid subscription system but instead it's like twitter is trying to prove a point by taking down the NY times... meanwhile nobody knows how this whole thing is actually gonna work. and what really gets me is that anyone can become a "verified" account just by paying for it, which is basically a scam waiting to happen 🤑 how are we supposed to trust that the legit accounts aren't being drowned out by bots or people trying to buy their way into the blue check mark crowd?

idk why Musk doing this 🤔, seems like he trying to create more drama & controversy... 🚨 but at same time, it make me think Twitter gotta crack down on bots & fake accounts, that's def a good thing ⚠️ stats show 60% of all tweets are from bots 👀 if Musk enforce paid verification system, it could help reduce bots by 40% 💸 but how he gonna stop scammers impersonating users? 🤷‍♂️ 70% of Twitter users don't care about blue checks anyway 🙄 and btw, did you know that tweet engagement has been increasing by 20% since Musk took over? 🚀
