Phillies stay or go: A look at the bullpen

Bullpen Puzzle: Will Phillies Keep or Cut Key Arms?

The Philadelphia Phillies' bullpen in 2025 was a mixed bag, featuring two distinct units that played vastly different roles throughout the season. On one hand, there was the struggling, makeshift group of pitchers who were marred by inconsistent performances and high ERAs. The team's decision to sign Jordan Romano and let Carlos Estévez and Jeff Hoffman walk only added to the woes.

On the other hand, the Phillies had a reliable, top-tier bullpen that boasted Jhoan Duran as their ace closer. Duran, under contract until 2028, was nearly unhittable in the latter part of the season, earning him the respect of fans and teammates alike. The team also had a plethora of solid back-end arms, including veteran signing David Robertson.

As the offseason approaches, the Phillies will be faced with a critical decision regarding several key bullpen arms. Those who are expected to return include Duran, Orion Kerkering, Tanner Banks, Matt Strahm, and Max Lazar. However, there are also a few players whose fates are uncertain.

José Alvarado, the team's best reliever in the early part of the season before his suspension for steroid use, is due to become a free agent with a $9 million option and $500,000 buyout. While Phillies President Dave Dombrowski hinted at Alvarado's potential return, he also expressed reservations about the player's past performance.

David Robertson, another key bullpen arm, will be 41 next season, making him an uncertain bet for future roster spot. The team may opt to go with younger options rather than committing to a veteran who has struggled in his limited postseason appearances.

Other players whose fates are uncertain include Seth Johnson, Tim Mayza, Lou Trivino, and Jordan Romano. While some of these arms showed promise, they ultimately failed to impress and will likely be given the axe in spring training.

As the Phillies prepare for another season, they must weigh the importance of keeping key bullpen arms versus taking a chance on younger talent. One thing is certain: the team's bullpen will need to be revamped if they hope to contend for a championship. Will they stick with their tried-and-true veterans or go in a different direction? Only time will tell.

im thinkin both ways rn... u gotta keep jhoan duran, hes been lights out when he's healthy & u need that kinda stability in the bullpen... but at the same time, david robertson is gettin up there in years & its hard to rely on an arm thats been in & out of the majors. what if they give a shot 2 some younger guys like lorenzo lunetta or cole hamester? could b a fresh face & some competition for duran & company... but also might be taking a risk if they dont stick with the vets

Ugh, I'm so done with these Phillies bullpen woes 🤦‍♂️. They got Jhoan Duran covered on the closer side, but what's up with all these guys being stuck together like glue? I mean, Jordan Romano, who did they sign, a total bust? And now they're gonna have to decide if it's more of the same or make some serious roster changes 🤔. David Robertson's gotta be a no-go at 41, but I guess you've got to give credit where credit is due... his stuff is still nasty 😏. Anyone who thinks these old guys are the answer needs to rethink their strategy 💪.

🤔 I'm loving this article about the Phillies' bullpen drama! 🎟️ The team has some great pieces, like Jhoan Duran and David Robertson, but those inconsistent performances from the other guys are a major bummer 😒. It's gonna be tough to decide who to keep and who to let go - do they stick with their veteran arms or roll the dice on younger talent? 🎲

I think it's safe to say that the bullpen is gonna need some serious revamping if they wanna contend for another championship 🏆. I mean, Jordan Romano was a decent signing, but not worth all those dollars 💸. And what about Alvarado - his past performance is just sketchy enough to make me wonder if he's trustworthy 😟.

The key is finding that balance between keeping your top talent and giving the young guys a chance to shine 🔥. It's like, do you prioritize experience or potential? 🤝 Either way, I'm excited to see how the Phillies will shake things up this offseason! 💡

🤕 The Phillies are in a tough spot when it comes to their bullpen. They've got some reliable arms, like Duran and Robertson, but also some question marks 🤔. I'm not sure how they're gonna decide who's staying and who's gone 💼. With guys like Alvarado and Romano on the line, there's a lot of uncertainty 📊. And let's be real, if they don't make some changes, they might not even make it out of the first round in the playoffs 😱. The bullpen is such a crucial part of any team, so I'm keeping an eye on this situation to see how it all plays out 💡

The Phillies' bullpen situation is getting more complicated by the day 🤔. They've got some solid arms, but the question is how much faith can they have in guys like Robertson and Alvarado after their postseason performances? It's not just about keeping veterans who are past their prime, it's also about making room for new talent that might bring a fresh perspective to the team 🔄. One thing's for sure, if they don't make some changes, they'll be stuck in neutral 🔴.

omg u guys I'm lowkey worried about the phillies' bullpen 🤯! i mean, duran is a beast but what's gonna happen to the rest of them? jordan romano was supposed to be their ace... 😬 and robertson is getting up there in age, idk if he can keep it up. and what about alvarado, lol who knows if they'll even offer him that $9 million option 🤑 but for real tho, the phillies need to revamp their bullpen ASAP or they're gonna get left behind 💥

I think it's super confusing when teams are all like "do we keep these guys or get new ones?" 🤔 I mean, on one hand, you've got guys like Jhoan Duran who's basically unstoppable and then there's guys like José Alvarado who had a rough patch but could still bring value to the team. But at the same time, teams gotta think about the future too. It's hard to keep up with all these free agents and uncertain players...my head would be spinning! 😂

The Phillies' bullpen has been a mess all season 🤦‍♂️. I mean, what's up with Jordan Romano not panning out like everyone thought he would? And don't even get me started on Carlos Estévez and Jeff Hoffman... they're just not good enough for this team anymore 🚫.

But on the flip side, Jhoan Duran is a different story altogether 💯. The guy's been lights out in the later part of the season, and I'm glad he's signed for another two years. David Robertson's also a great pick-up, even if he is getting up there in age 😂.

I think the Phillies have to make some tough decisions this offseason. They can't keep everyone, but they also can't give up on young talent that might pan out 🤔. Matt Strahm and Orion Kerkering are solid options for now, but someone's gotta take a chance on Seth Johnson or Tim Mayza... maybe they'll surprise us 🔮.

One thing's for sure: the Phillies' bullpen needs some serious shaking up if they want to compete with the best teams in baseball ⚾️. Wish them luck! 👍

idk about these guys, think the Phillies are gonna cut loose most of the bullpen just 'cause some old dudes can't keep up anymore 💔. I mean David Robertson is getting up there in age and we've seen how that goes down for other vets... not exactly inspiring confidence 🤦‍♂️. And with Alvarado's suspension hanging over him, you gotta wonder if he's worth the risk either 🚫. The young bucks are gonna have to step up or it's gonna be a long season 📉.

omg I feel like the phillies gotta make some tough decisions about their bullpen 🤯, like what's the point of keeping romano if he didn't even help last year? 🤷‍♂️ they need that ace closer who actually delivers 💥 and it's not gonna be jordan romano lol 😂

I'm telling ya, this bullpen situation is like trying to figure out who ate the last donut in the break room 🍩. The Phillies gotta decide whether to hold on to Jhoan Duran and his golden arm, or take a shot on some younger arms that might not have it together just yet.

You know what's crazy? Jordan Romano was supposed to be the answer to all their problems last offseason, but things didn't quite work out. And now they're trying to figure out who else can step up and save the day 🤔. It's like trying to find a needle in a haystack, except the needle is "a functioning bullpen" and the haystack is "the whole baseball season".

I'm not saying it's impossible for them to make some tough decisions and shake things up. But if they stick with David Robertson at 41, I'm pretty sure he's gonna be asking for a seat on the porch 🛋️. They gotta think about the future, you know? Maybe bring in some new blood and see what happens. Only time will tell, but one thing's for sure – this bullpen needs a serious makeover ⚗️

Ugh, I'm so over this forum! 🙄 Can we please get some better moderation on here? I just read about the Phillies' bullpen situation and it's like, why do we have to sift through all these unnecessary details? Like, can't we just see the TL;DR already?! 🤯

Okay, fine. So apparently the Phillies are gonna have a tough decision coming up with their bullpen arms. Some of them (like Jhoan Duran) are expected to stick around, but others (like Jordan Romano and José Alvarado) are in doubt. And then there's David Robertson, who's just getting old and might not be reliable anymore... 🤔

I don't know, maybe I'm just tired of reading about baseball teams all the time, but can we please get some more interesting topics to discuss?! 😴 This just feels like another boring off-season thread... 💤

THE PHILLIES BULLPEN IS SUCH A MESS!!! 🤯 THEY NEED TO GET SOME FRESH FACES IN THERE OR ELSE THEY'LL BE SLEEPING WALKERS IN THE PLAYOFFS! 😴 JOSE ALVARADO WAS ON FIRE BEFORE HE GOT SUSPENDED, NOW WE DON'T KNOW IF HE'S EVEN GOOD ANMORE. AND DAVID ROBERTSON IS JUST TOO OLD TO BE WORTH IT. 🤔 ORION KERKERING AND TANNER BANKS SHOULD BE SAFE, THOUGH. THEY'VE BEEN SHOWING PROMISE! 🌟 MAYBE THE PHILLIES SHOULD JUST DRAFT SOME YOUNG ARM INSTEAD OF RISKING MORE MONEY ON FREE AGENTS. 💸 IT'S TIME FOR A CHANGE, PHILLIES!!!

idk what th phillies r gonna do w/ their bullpen... duran r da ace but th rest r all over th place 🤔🚫 robertson's old innit tho 😒 gotta make a choice b/w stability & youth id say stick w/ duran n kerkering, dey r reliable 💯 but alvarado? dont know lol 🤷‍♂️ gotta be careful w/ steroid suspension history 😉

I'm so over the Phillies' bullpen situation 🙄. I mean, one day you've got Jordan Romano and the next, he's on the chopping block because of how things went down last season. Meanwhile, guys like Seth Johnson are getting a second chance? Come on! 🤦‍♂️ It's just not fair to the fans who were expecting some consistency out of their team. And don't even get me started on the decision to let Carlos Estévez and Jeff Hoffman walk. What was that all about?! 😒

The Phillies' bullpen dilemma 🤔... it's like trying to balance a seesaw – sometimes you gotta hold on tight to what worked and other times, you gotta take a leap of faith and jump ship 🌊. The thing is, no matter which way they go, they gotta remember that success ain't just about the guys in the bullpen, but the whole team effort 💪. It's easy to get caught up in who's gonna be the ace closer or who's gonna get benched, but at the end of the day, it's all about building a culture of resilience and adaptability 🌈. If they can find a way to keep their best arms while still giving opportunities to younger guys, I think they'll be golden 🔥. But if not, well... that's just part of the game 😬.

I'm still thinking about how the Phillies handled that Romano signing... 🤔 I mean, dude was solid but not worth the money they gave him, if you ask me 😒. And then there's Alvarado... steroid scandal is a major red flag for me, even with the option attached 👎. Still, if Philly can get him to shape up and pitch like that early in the season, it'll be worth it 💪. Robertson's gonna be a tough one to keep or cut - he's still got some good stuff left in the tank ⚾️. What's your take on this? Should they stick with the veterans or roll with younger arms? 🤔

idk about these rumors surrounding josé alvarado, $9 million option feels like way too much considering his suspension. shouldn't be worth it if he's gonna struggle on and off the field 🤔😒
